Protesting war in Iraq and being accountable

An article in the News & Record, "Bush says troops will leave when mission is complete" (Jan. 17), contains a statement and a direct quote that, for me, are the epitome of arrogance. I quote:

"Bush said the public ratified his approach toward Iraq when they re-elected him. He said there is no reason to hold any administration official accountable for mistakes or misjudgments in the planning or conduction of the war. 'We had an accountability moment, and that's called the 2004 elections.' "

Bush has totally discounted the millions of "the public" who passionately continue to protest the war in Iraq. Would that every American could have experienced the impressive exhibition put in place by the American Friends Service Committee at The Depot in Greensboro. This exhibition, "Eyes Wide Open," was an unutterably sad commentary on the human costs of the Iraq war.

Furthermore, I am convinced that a great many Americans who re-elected Bush did so because of this administration's conservative stand on abortion and homosexuality rather than "ratifying" Bush's tragically mismanaged war.

How about the human costs of the Kurds that Saddam gased in Iraq, how about the mass graves with tens of thousands of bodies, how about the rape rooms? If you had your way, they would all still be open for business.

How about the Oil for Food scandal with the UN, France, Germany, & Russia taking billions destined for starving Iraqis and lining their pockets with it?

I voted for Bush because he truly has a vision for democracy in the Middle East. Kerry had no ideas, just criticism. You lefties decided we should just live with the Soviet Union, Reagan thought otherwise. The recent elections and freedom in the Ukraine are a product of Reagan's vision. With you guys in power, they would still be starving behind the Iron Curtain.

Thank you, DJ; that was very entertaining.

Dubya is Satan, pure and simple.

I wonder if you would have this same opinion if downtown Greensboro was hit instead of the World Trade Center buildings? Did you forget that Sadaam has been paying terrorists $$$ when they killed people in Israel? Oh wait - thats right he didn't do it to the U.S.! (right???) We should have just kept ignoring Iraq and pretended he didn't exist --- That is what you people would have done (Democrats).

Liberal Democrats are Satan, pure and simple.

The problem with this country is that there *aren't* any liberal Democrats.

It is also a problem that many people will believe anything some drunk driver tells them, no matter how many facts dispute him.

Well, TL (you utter moron) if we'd had that pot-addicted liberal Democrat Al Gore as president on 9/11/01 we'd have surrendered on the spot and we'd all be speaking Arabic and praying to Mecca 5 times a day right now.
Republicans=freedom.
Democrats=submission.

TL, you ignorant slut. DJ started these comments with intelligent thought but you , like most moronic liberal democrats, started the name calling and Bush bashing. JayCeeNC and Don give'm hell.

The problem is Republicans who believe that Democrats are evil and should be destroyed.

The problem is also Democrats who believe that Republicans are evil and should be destroyed.

"Conservatives versus Liberals" is a lie. An illusion. Conservatives and Liberals have the same motive: power. Oh, they may have different methods, but the motive is clear enough to those that would take off the blinders: power to the state, and they want control of that state.

But neither give a damn about the individual... the most despised and hated minority of all.

The "war" between Democrat Liberals and Republican Conservatives is a fraud, intended to distract the American people from the robbery that happens to they and their posterity every day. That anyone would subscribe to such factionalism shows not a strength of passion but a weakness of character. It signifies that they cannot be a person of their own merit but instead must rely upon collective strength to have any semblance of "identity".

Fools. All of them, fools.

Children, come in off of the playground and stop your silly name calling!

First, NO ONE can say who would have done what had they or anyone else been in power on 9/11/2001! All we know is what happened. And we are still either praising or cursing it. Let us let that one drop and look at what is happening and how we can hopefully change/alter the paths we are on.

First and foremost, I am against War. I am also against the current military conflict in which US troops are involved. I say this not because of any title that others place upon me. I say this because I am a pacifist. I abhore ALL war. There are alternatives to war. PEACE is the goal and it is NEVER gained through war. There may be lulls, however, peace is not obtained through war. History does/will show & prove this.

The task now is to find ways to end the conflict in which US troops are involved and then move toward further PEACE.

Hey Darryl,

I agree with you on the name calling. I know for fact that I am not a moron. I am a college grad and run a successful business. I like to argue policy and facts without calling people names.

I respect your pacifist views, although I sharply disagree. Throughout history there have been evil people in the world who wish to dominate other people.

No one "likes" war, but try telling me with a straight face that we should have just told Hitler, OK you can have Europe, just be nice to us. Try telling the Japanese, "Well guys you just destroyed Pearl Harbor and killed a lot of people, but that's ok, we just want to get along". Try telling terrorists after they used jets for missles and killed 3000 of your fellow countrymen: "Gee fellas, can't we just all get along and be nice to each other".

Pacifism is a noble goal for a perfect world, but with the reality of mankind, it will never be acheived.

If someone of your thought were president, we would be overrun and enslaved within a matter of months. All the best to you.

No one abhors war more than those with boots on the ground who fight it.
But when you have an enemy whose sole intent is to destroy us and our way of life, there is nothing to negotiate and no middle ground on which to find reconciliation. There is only a winner and a loser, and the loser is the one that's dead.
Better them than us.
Let me put it this way: If someone were holding a gun on your wife and family and told you the only way you could stop their deaths would be to kill him, what would you do?
Terrorists are holding a gun to the head of free people everywhere, the time for action is now, abhorrent as that may seem.
