New resident wants independent movies
I am a new resident in Greensboro. Being a movie buff, I was very surprised to learn Greensboro did not have a theater that offered all the wonderful independent and documentary films that are being made.
I moved from Chapel Hill where three theaters showed these films. I miss them. I do not believe I am the only person in this town who would enjoy having the indies available to them.
Come on, theater owners, don't deny us the independent movies.

Betty,
The Janus Theatres in Greensboro used to show more of the limited release movies. Unfortunately, they shut their doors a few years ago after another Megaplex opened right down the street.
I've been to some of those theaters in Chapel Hill. Not only do they show small and independent films, they also occasionally show a cult classic like 'Bladerunner' or 'Pulp Fiction' on the big screen.
I believe if someone built a small theater like the one Betty is talking about, people would come.

The Carolina Theater on Greene St. occasionally shows classics. And the Carousel on Battleground shows smaller films frequently.

If you don't mind a 1/2 hour drive you could also try the NC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. They do alot of indy and art films. Here's the contact info:
Stevens Center, 405 W. Fourth St. Part of the Films on Fourth series of the N.C. School of the Arts and the Winston-Salem Cinema Society. Call 721-1945.

There's also the film school at UNCG right here in Greensboro, which would require less of a drive. Unfortunately we just held our big annual film festival this past weekend, so it's too late for that. But there is a course called "Media Workshop" which includes filmmaker workshops and screenings of student films and smaller independent films every Wednesday at 5pm in Carmichael room 02. It's generally open to the public, but call first. Call 334-5360 for more info on that.
There's also a screening at the end of every semester which is open to the public featuring works by students.

Greensboro is headed towards being the kind of people that watch those types of films and vote for Erskine Bowles (God help us), but we aren't there quite yet. Maybe you should move back to Chapel Hill, we don't see the value in the "independent" film niche quite yet. If you give us some time hopefully we never will!

Jerome, that was about the most idiotic and useless post I've seen on these forums yet.
BTW, I watch indie films and make them. And I didn't vote for Bowles.
