Violence in schools demands a response

It concerns me greatly that school violence and threats of violence are on the rise. I see it every day! It's absolutely imperative that we have more administrators and resource officers in our schools due to the fact that too many kids are getting away with crimes in the school.

I realize that taxpayers are thinking that'll cost too much. But, parents, which would you rather see: higher taxes or a child who's been either beaten, harassed, mugged or even murdered?

We must have more overseers in the schools, especially middle and high schools. We as citizens and you as parents must demand a better environment for these students.

Matthew has a very valid concern. The culture of violence that has been allowed to flourish in some schools will take years to reverse. In the meantime, I suggest parents take matters into your own hands. Check out one or more of the local schools of choice, such as Guilford Preparatory Academy.

Silence! Secrecy! It appears that some school administrators are trying to avoid the glare of the media by clamping a lid of secrecy down on incidents that happen in their schools. After a fourth grade student brought a gun into the elementary school in Hendricks, MN, on 2/27/06, school employees were ordered to remain silent--but the children talked. We now know that was not the first serious incident that has happened in local schools. Allegedly, a school employee got boys drunk so he could molest them but that was not reported to the police or mentioned in the media. Now, administrators are presenting a sanitized version of the gun incident to the media. The attitude is "there were no bullets, it was just a gun."
