Excessive coverage spreads Carolina blues

I hope you don't run out of Carolina blue ink because of your excessive use of it. Between your reporting and WFMY (Channel 2) coverage, it seems the only school is UNC-Chapel Hill.

I do hope Carolina wins the championship tonight, it being the only ACC team now in the final two, but there have been days when each front page and sports page front were covered with Carolina Blue. You and WFMY 2 love to put extra in for your team.

My favorite yet was when WFMY cut into a program three minutes before the news to announce Roy Williams was coming to Carolina. It was only a news break for those fans of UNC.

News should be just facts, not personal preferences and opinions.

Thank you Kathy for speaking for the rest of us ACC fans who don't have Carolina blue running in our veins. As a fan of another North Carolina team, I've been disappointed this year by our local television stations that seem to think the only ACC games we'd like broadcast are Carolina games. I know there are the exceptions, but it seems like WFMY will only pre-empt television shows if the Tar Heels play. And the News & Record will only put NC State on the front page of the paper to let us know they lost. If they win, it is buried in the Sports section. At least that is the way it feels.

I know the sun doesn't shine on the same dog's behind all the time. So, I'm waiting for the news to follow suit.

Please, Mr. T!!! WFMY does not pre-empt shows to show only Carolina games. The basketball television shedule is made out at the beginning of the year. The agreement the ACC has with Raycon and Jefferson Pilot dictates what games are shown when. Wee see all ACC games in this area whether on ESPN or FOX Sports or WFMY. Whether or not the people at WFMY are Tar Heel fans or not is irrelevant when it comes to broadcasting ACC games.

2 years ago Carolina fans couldnt find positive stories on their team anywhere, and all the other teams got the glory and the news coverage....but Im sure that was ok with you at the time. Carolina made it the farthest in the tournament and is obviously going to be reaping the benifits of extended media coverage as a result. Believe me, we see plenty of Duke coverage....and its even spilled over into commercials now. Bottom line, every NC team gets its glory in the papers in cycles and since you all dislike Carolina you are more apt to notice the coverage.

Kathy,
How far did YOUR team make it in the tournament? Did it play Saturday night? What time does your team play tonight?

Sounds like "sour grapes" to me!

The Age of Roy has begun! Disaffected readers, accustom yourselves to front page news about the latest conquests of the Carolina juggernaut! All other NC teams shall heretofore be banished to page 3 so as to make room for heroic accounts of Tar Heel victories.

I say unto you, Spare me your craven whimperings! Did you really expect Coach K's latest gardening efforts to make front page news? Did you truly think that the paper would cover Skip Prosser's purchase of a new BMW last week? Or publish a front-page article reminding readers that State still has a basketball team? I think not.

Truly, the N&R has fulfilled its role in showering the Tar Heel Champions with glory! More praise to Carolina! Lavish these great champions with honor! And be silent, ye envious worms, lest we lay waste to your pathetic programs!

Bunny,

Im a carolina fan...did you misunderstand my post...I was telling all the naysayers to quit complaining about all the coverage we get, because we have earned it and I even added in a knock to Coach K and his annoying American Express commercial.

Mark,

You may be right about games being scheduled in advance, but if you don't think WFMY is biased towards Carolina, you aren't watching the same channel. I looked at regular season games played at night and broadcast on WFMY this year. Of the 7 shown during weeknights, I counted 5 that included Carolina. Now, one could go see the game on ESPN or Fox Sports, but that doesn't change the fact that WFMY is biased.

roy w. said:

Perhaps, Mr. T, what you call bias is what other people call "capitalism"--i.e. that WFMY shows more Carolina games because MORE PEOPLE WATCH CAROLINA GAMES. This principle--that networks try to maximize viewership--has been widely observed by experts in media studies.

Mr. T,

I didn't say the were or weren't biased. I said that was irrelevant when it comes to what games are shown. The conference and the sponsors decide that. As Roy W. said, maybe Carolina is scheduled more because more people watch Carolina. If it makes you feel any better, though, I remember a few weeks ago during the NCAA tournament when State and Duke were scheduled to play at the same time. This newspaper took a poll on who viewers would want to watch and the overwhelming majority said State. And WFMY asked CBS and the NCAA to put the State game on because the fans wanted that game. Duke fans had to watch on cable.

mr t said:

Mark, thanks for proving my point. WFMY would have never taken that poll if it was State and Carolina. They would have put the Carolina game on and the State fans would have listened to it on the radio.

And yes, you are correct that there are more Carolina fans than any other team. (Or at least that is true when Carolina is winning)
