Schiavo case inspires unworthy behavior

The Schiavo case has brought out emotions from all over. Instead of galvanizing the Christian church, it has brought out the worst in some who claim to follow Christ. I have seen name-calling, threats and even judgment from many others who had differing opinions.
I guess this is what Paul was referring to when he said our works would be tried with fire (1 Corinthians 3:13-15).

I just want to remind Christians that we represent Christ. Please act in a manner worthy of his name regardless of your stand on this situation. Doing less may impact eternity to those waiting to see Jesus in you.

Actually, I think that this story just goes to show the truth of the only prophecy that Jesus said that has come about:

Matt 10:34-36 - "Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one's foes will be members of one's own household."

Boy, that one has been true from day one. Some "Prince of Peace"!

And judgement is always Gods.

Many devout Christians have gone both ways in similar circumstances with their on family members, including apparently Tom Delay who made a similar choice to Michael Shaivo. I don't critisize Delay for his choice nor do I critisize Mr. Shiavo for his. It is a personal choice that both will have to live with. If society needs to change the laws then that is a debate that we should have. What they did was legal which ends their responsibilty to the greater society.

They owe us nothing else and we owe them their privacy.

eric,

Do you think there would be freedom of choice if evil were not allowed it's place? You are blaming God for being wise enough not to mechanize our actions and outcomes. This life is a proving ground. Would you rather love someone with your heart or because you had to? Nobody wakes up in the morning and decides to learn about these facets of His character, it is given to those who realize they're in no position to question His great plan. You are the mouse who plays while the cat's away. He's coming soon and is trying very hard to get you to listen and understand. Your intellect is getting in the way of an open mind.

Eric, Jesus only made one accurate prophecy? Are you saying he did not prediction the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem in Matthew 24? Please explain your bold assertion.

I think if you look at history, the sword usually comes at the expense of Christians rather than Christians wielding the sword.

Wow! Why not change the topic to "Attack Eric!"

Eric has only stated what he sees. Sadly, he is very accurrate in what he is saying. Far too many Christians would rather fight (in whatever context one chooses here) than to work for peaceable solutions to situations.

As Christians, people are called to reconcile. Sadly, far too many today want to tear apart rathen than put together.

The Schiavo case only further validates this conclusion. Maybe one day the Christians will come to realize that PEACE is really the answer!

attack eric or love eric? Eric chose the words: "some prince of peace!" to obviously show his disapproval of Jesus's work ethic and wisdom. Eric's point of view comes from seeing things from a non-spiritual perspective. This perspective cannot be enlightened until he realizes his self-importance obstructs the revelation of a greater good.

ECUMAN, I think if you'll check, you'll find that the Gospels were all written after Jerusalem fell in CE 66. I'd take this particular "prophecy" thingy with a grain or two of salt.

As to who has been weilding swords more through history... I guess that depends on who you accept as being "Christian," doesn't it? {;-)

According to historical accounts the Temple was destroyed in 70AD by the General Titus, who became Cesear. The seige began in April and the Temple was actually burned in August. This according to Josephus, who was with Titus and who was present at the events and recorded them.

As far as Matthew being written scholars date the writing somewhere between 50AD and 65 AD, which would have been prior to the Temple destruction by either 20 or 5 yrs depending on which date is chosen.

There is also a second prophesy pertaining to the destruction of Jerusalem made by Jesus and is recorded in the Gospel of Luke 21:20

As far as Matthew 10:34-36 goes it is not a prophsey but when taken in context in the next verses it explains just what Jesus was saying. In verses 37 & 38 this is made clear. I have found that one can pick things out to give different meaning to the text. In the entire Chapter Jesus is speaking to his disciples and tells them what to expect in following him. He is telling them that they must forsake all. Jesus is speaking in a parable form in speaking of tearing the family apart. From the Amplified NT 37He who loves [and [n]takes more pleasure in] father or mother more than [in] Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves [and takes more pleasure in] son or daughter more than [in] Me is not worthy of Me;

38And he who does not take up his cross and follow Me [[o]cleave steadfastly to Me, conforming wholly to My example in living and, if need be, in dying also] is not worthy of Me.

39Whoever finds his [[p]lower] life will lose it [the higher life], and whoever loses his [lower] life on My account will find it [the higher life].

It is best to read the entire text before taking something as being complete.

Eric, First of all, Jerusalem and the temple fell in 70 AD. Second, please provide some credible evidence that the New Testament was written after the fall of Jerusalem, not just your presupposition. Third, were Stalin, Lenin and Mao Tse Dung Christians? No, they were atheists to the core. Would you like to add up the number of people that they had killed (over 100 million)during their during their collective reigns and compare that to the Crusades? Much of the killing during the Crusades was wrong and I do not defend them, but Christianity isn't even close to accounting for the number of killings as atheistic governments are.
