Senate power grab and a sinister agenda

Powerful elites have long tried to amass even more power. I thought our country was immune from such power grabs, thanks to the wisdom of our Founding Fathers.

But now it looks as though 200 years of bipartisan checks and balances are being threatened with extinction, thanks to the "nuclear option" being attempted by congressional neocons.

As powerful as their corporate sponsors already are, they are quite willing to overturn Senate rules to grant their cronies even more power and wealth.

Now that they are in the majority, they refuse to deal fairly in matters of judicial appointments. If they get their way, they will ram through even the most unqualified nominees.

Some would excuse slavery, environmental destruction or the subjugation of women; most would favor corporations. American justice would die.

What are these Republicans so afraid of that they'd try to seize absolute power? To even consider this reveals just how sinister their agenda really is. If we don't stop them, we can say goodbye to "the land of the free." It will have become an oligarchy. And the American Experiment will have failed.

You are exactly right. It is becoming a dangerous country to live in. The cons cannot be trusted with the judicial appointments any more than they can be trusted to give the real story about Iraq or our social security.

Black helicopters abound. Bush and his judges want to turn the US into a theocracy. The sky is falling!!

Yeah Valerie, I got Kerry's email also...what he did not say was that the Senate filibuster was only invented as a Senate rule about 120 yr ago and is NOT provided for in the US Constitution which calls for a MAJORITY to confirm presidential nominees.

You should also know that none other than that unregenerate Klansman, Robt E. Byrd of WVA is the author of the "nuclear" tactic, having used it on the Senate floor in 1977, 97, 80 and 1987.
Senate liberal democrats are using this tactic to deny the Constitutional right of the President to name qualified justices to the Federal bench. It is about time federal judges were appointed who interpret the Constitution, not create law out of whole cloth or "international standards" whatever the hell they are.

Now, Valerie, take a deep breath and repeat after me
"The Democrats lost the Congress, John Kerry lost (to 'that idiot Bush')by 3-1/2 million votes. We Liberals need to get a life and a platform other than "NO""

Mike Crouch

Let the Republicans have their way, I say. They won't always be in power and at some point in the future when the tables are turned and they no longer have the opportunity to influence the judicial nominees of an eventual Democratic majority, they will at least have learned the lessons of supporting short-sighted policy decisions.

The Republicans are restoring the rule of law so flagrantly violated by the Democrats in their bid to retain some of the power they've lost.
The Dems will do anything, even violate the law, to grab power and suck dollars out of our pockets. I think the Republicans will be in power for many years.

I can't believe it took Valerie until her last paragraph to use the word Republican and sinister. Sorry to bust your bubble Valerie, but if the Republicans are sinister and evil, so are the Democrats. It's all about power. Who has it and who doesn't. Right now, Republicans have it. The Democrats can't stand it. Wait 10 years and the tables will turn. Such is life. Thanks for being so objective.
