Duncan does his best for Guilford schools

How long has it been since you read about the "good" of Guilford County's elected school board members? I have had the privilege of spending some time with Alan Duncan over the past soccer season and take great comfort in knowing that he is involved in making decisions that will affect so many children and families.

I have watched him dash in and out of his own child's soccer games because he had school board meetings, high school graduations and countless other demands that come with his elected position. I have had conversations with him in which he expressed his convictions of doing what was in the best interest of the children, and I have watched him do it. A lot of dads didn't even show up for the games, and they didn't have the excuse of working for the good of Guilford County Schools.

I know this isn't election season, but I want to encourage the citizens of Guilford County take comfort in electing leaders who live with character, integrity and commitment. Resist the temptation to make a sport out of our public officials, and be thankful for men like Duncan.

Cindy,

Are you talking about the same Arrogant, Condescending man that serves as Dr. Griers " JOCKEY BOY " ?????

If so, You can bet that many in this county do not agree with your view.

Also, you should feel honored that the N&R used your letter as part of the "Annual School Budget Promotion Editorial Page".

It seems that at this time every year, the N&R uses its media resources to help and promote Dr. Griers' Socialists Agenda.

You have got to be kidding! Let me ask you this: Would you feel the same way about Mr. Duncan if he forced your children to ride a bus for 90 minutes one way to go to a school they are not interested in attending in order to implement an experiment in social engineering? He has done nothing for this county especially High Point. Let him try to use your children as a commodity to help the failing schools and then tell me how wonderful he is. So big deal he goes to his children's soccer game. I'll be lucky if I can go to any sporting events since I am too busy carting my kid back and forth to a school that is 11 miles from my house.

Ms. Bishop,

Yes, I would agree that Alan Duncan is an intelligent, caring parent, and he does have strong convictions about doing what he "thinks" is best for children. I have no doubt that he acts in a manner that is true to his beliefs, but it is the unfortunate truth that his actions and beliefs don't necessarily coincide with those of many of the parents of those children. And, when it comes down to cases, I am sure that you believe that you have a better idea of what is "best" for your children than Alan Duncan does. I am sure that you would never abdicate and cede the responsibility of making decisions for your children to Alan Duncan or anyone else. And, that is exactly what is happening in our schools today.

Alan Duncan and a few other members of the school board have made decisions for many children in this county that don't coincide with their parents ideas of what is "best". Alan Duncan championed the infamous High Point Reassignment Plan, and in so doing, he took the rights of parents and decided where their children would attend school, without any consideration for the parents' preferences. Since you live in Oak Ridge, I assume that your children attend school at Northwest, which is a very good school, much like what Southwest was a few years ago before it was demolished. When Alan Duncan and the other board members decide that the socioeconomic mix at Northwest is unsatisfactory (which is certainly already is) and that it is terribly overcrowded (which it already is by any measure), then I am sure that you will be in full support of Mr. Duncan's decision to enter your children into a lottery to determine whether they attend high school at Northwest or some other designated school in Greensboro to which they have to ride a school bus 90 minutes each way every day. I am sure that you will still find Mr. Duncan to be a man of character, integrity, and commitment, and you will have the utmost trust and faith in Mr.Duncan and fully support the implementation of the Northwest Guilford Reassignment Plan and all of Mr. Duncan's decisions that will have a profound effect upon your children's lives and educations. And, you will be at peace knowing that he will be doing what he thinks is best for your children.

It is amazing at how the people not affected by the stupendious decisions of the School Board seem to thoroughly enjoy the "integrity" of those Board members.

As the previous poster noted, when Ms. Bishop's family is turned upside down by some stupendious decision of the School Board, she may have a completely different opinion of the Board Member/s.

Mr. Duncan has ruined the lives of countless thousands of individuals in Guilford County.

Quite honestly I wish he would just stay at his kids' soccer games and leave my child alone.

He's one useless guy.

Cindy,
You are so lucky and you don’t know it.
I wont repeat what has been said here but it so true. NW is the best High school in Guilford and you can bet that Grier and the school board do not like it. Too many whites and not enough free lunches. Lucky for you that it is so far out of the way that I think it would be impossible to do a High Point Chop plan on it.
But I have seen another side to Mr Duncan. Believe me he is a very calculated cynical person. When I went for my appeal it was like being in a court of law. It wasnt just about a parent wanting his child to go to the local school that he can see across the street. It was about proving (and getting it in writing) that there was no other reason other than mentioned to why my child should not be sent to HP central. It was an eye opening experience. I hope you never have to experience it.

Cindy, we are just ordinary people who bought our house in a nice area like you and then all of a sudden you don’t have control of where your children are going to school. Think about it. Answer me here. Would you be satisfied? I think your answer would be no.
Then Mr. Duncan would not be so nice. We the people complaining here are not the bad guys. We are just like you. Caring parents.

Nuff said.

Reassigned,

I think that you are wrong when you say that Northwest is so far out of the way that it wold never be subjected to a High Point Chop Plan. Northwest Guilford County is one of the fastest growing parts of the county with new expensive houses being thrown up every day. With that sort of rapid growth, how is Northwest High to handle all of this growth? Sure a new high school is being built further east to relieve the extreme overcrowding that exists, but at the rate that they are getting that school built, it won't have much effect on the problem. No, the day is coming when a Northwest Chop Plan will have to be implemented. And, it's easier for the board to get funds to buy new school buses than to get bonds approved to build new facilities. So as long as the schools can get an unlimited supply of property tax dollars, they'll be able to buy new buses and shuffle those students to Greensboro every day. I'm sure that there are some schools there that have some unoccupied seats that some of the best and brightest of Northwest can fill just fine. And, that'll help improve the socioeconomic mix of schools on both ends of the bus ride.

Hey Cindy,

Just wait till your beloved and caring Mr. Duncan, with all of his good character and integrity announces that he sees too many white kids on your soccer team. And he proclaims that some kids cannot afford their soccer equipment and some can. So, for the good of all he will, without hesitation, start loading the white kids on a bus to go play for soccer teams across town who's teams need these "right" kind of players with the "right" equipment.

It'll be great! Set aside another couple of hours each soccer day for the commute across town. If you think dad's aren't attending in enough numbers NOW, just wait till their kid has to play on a team on the other end of the county.

I too love that Mr. Duncan. He's always doing what's best for our kids. Don't be surprised too if he suggests that your neighborhood too "white". I hear that he is trying to put quotas in the neighborhoods so that the schools won't have to be responsible for all of the social engineering.

Three cheers for Mr. Duncan!!! He's the best Social Engineer/Lawyer that I've ever met!

I bet he brings great snacks to the games too.

I'm so sick of Mr. Duncan's "this hurts me more that it hurts you" approach to education. He has brainwashed himself into truly thinking that busing is for the "greater good".

Well, as an attorney, you would think that he would know that busing is illegal--even if you just call it a "lottery". A lottery would have a more random outcome. Funny that ENTIRE neighhorhoods were "by lottery" selected to go across town. Funnier yet that they were all white. Coincidence or skirting the law?

I hope that in Mr. Duncan's next life that he is one of the bussed, instead of the "bussee".

And I hope that in THIS life someone pushes him off of that pedestal that he has put himself on.

Cindy Jolly, you wouldn't be so jolly if Duncan were screwing your kids. Your lily white Northwest district is next. Better pick a different sport for you child. It'll be hard to look at that 2 faced Duncan then, won't it.
