Proud of schools' tobacco-free status

We're back in school and as the parent of two, I face this transition with mixed emotions. One thing I feel really good about is the fact that Guilford County has been one of North Carolina's 100 percent tobacco-free school districts since 2001.

During the past several years the district has made great progress toward implementing the policy and getting the word out to our community. While other school districts waited, Guilford made the move because it was an important health issue and sent a consistent message to our kids. Now, more than half of the state's school districts are 100 percent tobacco free, as well as many hospitals, courthouses and health departments.

I am really proud when I attend a football game and see everyone enjoying the game and the clean air. For those not aware of the policy, I want to remind our community that all our school campuses and all school events are 100 percent tobacco free for students, staff, parents and visitors, 24 hours a day and seven days a week. That includes sporting events and car pool lines. It's great to know we have a district that supports the health of our students.

And many of those students will leave the school grounds and light up or put in a dip of snuff. Or perhaps those that don't will go home to an enviroment that is not "100% tobacco free". What do we do about that Ms.Webster? Start sending the health police on random home checks to look for marlboros?

A great deal of the money that built the schools in guilford county was confiscated from tobacco farmers. Altough that is little known fact to many of the parents in this area who fled the northern states to live here.

Tobacco free - yeah right! Some kids even have the nerve to smoke on school property during school hours! And nothing is done!

The schools are only tobacoo free on paper!

Hey Yard Dung what is the point of your letter? So what if students smoke elsewhere the point is they are not smoking at school. Please explain what yankees and tobacco farmers have to do with not smoking at school. You're like one of those little "yard dogs" that runs around in little circles biting at its own tail. Do explain about the yankees and not smoking at school.

gaytony said:

My wife and I are both from Ohio where smoking was allowed to students (my wife's high school had a smoking slab) and tolerated for students (my school had a code word when you walked into the bathroom).

My question is this: HOW do you ENFORCE no smoking in the carpool lane at any school? Because if I am in my car, and I want to smoke, I will do it...I don't care where I am. Someone tell me how this 'school policy' can possibly be policed.

yard dog said:

You sound like a yankee yallerstreak.huh?

The point is that there are busybodies like you and the letter writer trying to control everyone else's life.

yard dog said:

Yallerstreak,I notice you drop off the thread every day around 4:00 pm. Is that when your elders get home and you have to stop playing with the computer?

buz said:

" Because if I am in my car, and I want to smoke, I will do it...I don't care where I am "....is this the same gaytony that in other blogs speaks of his Christian values ? what you have admitted to is you care more about gaytony than others (that Christ gave His kife for)that you may become a stumbling block to. are you so weak willed that if you had to sit in the carpool lane at school for 15 minutes that you cannot control your urge to light up...or is it you just want to show the world "no one tells me what to do" ? are you aware your body is a temple ?
" My question is this: HOW do you ENFORCE no smoking in the carpool lane at any school? ".....easy gaytony, it is called self control and respect for others !

yard dog said:

"How do you enforce a no smoking rule in the car pool lane? " Answer: Nannyism.

Buz,
Ok, I usually just sit and read this blog. I enjoy reading everyones thoughts and views on things but now I am just livid!

I think the point that gaytony was trying to make is that government is controlling our lives more and more everyday and I know I for one have had it! It's not a matter of self control. I am an adult and what I choose to do in my own domain is my business! I am a smoker. I consider myself to be a very courteous smoker. I stay in the smoking sections, I walk off by myself to smoke at the park when there are others around not smoking, if I am at sports practice for my daughter I go to my car to smoke, when I go out with friends that don't smoke I refrain from smoking around them and even if I have a non smoker in my own vehicle I will refrain from smoking for their benefit.

But if I am sitting in a line in my own freaking vehicle and I want to light up a cigarette that is MY business!! I am not walking around blowing smoke on other people's children or on folks who don't smoke, I would be in MY vehicle. If I want to pollute my lungs then that is my business not the schools. If I choose not to treat my body as a temple then that is between me and God, not the schools trying to tell me I can't even smoke inside my vehicle!

Yard dog - sir how dare you call me a yankee - why I had a great-great - great grandfather who served honorably at Fort Fisher during the war for Southern Independance - yankee indeed. Sir you are no yard dog you are a cur - say Yard dog you want the definition of "yankee" - that's a quickie you do by yourself.

buz said:

mr. rattled,
sorry to have made you livid and i commend you on the manner in which you 'put others' in your equation when smoking...if only all smokers felt like you did there may NOT be as much complaining from us non smokers.
rattled, i was speaking from a Christian perspective to gaytony and from that perspective we are taught even if all things are lawful for us, that does NOT mean we HAVE to exercise that right.....that we COULD refrain from that activity for the benefit of others ( that seems Christ like to me ). i suppose we each need to determine what we do to our bodies and put inside them is either honoring or dishonoring our body and you are absolutley correct...it is between you and God.
you should give a clinic on courteous smoking, we would all benefit from it !

gaytony said:

buz,

I will not engage you in matters of faith as we have completely different views.

Smoking is not a matter of faith, it is a matter of personal right. It is MY RIGHT to sit in my car and smoke if I so desire. Car pool lane or no car pool lane. Rattled did a much better job of expressing my views than I did...thank you Rattled!

As for controlling my urges, I do pretty well. Can't you tell?

yard dog said:

YellowDOG,My appoligies. Never realized that. lmao. Very good.

buz said:

gaytony,
good enough............and yes i expect you could have been mean spirited with your reply ...which you were not....thanks !

truth said:

Rattled probably just needs a smoke. :)

Otherwise, how can you explain that type of livid reaction over a statement by Buz. Even if you disagree, why let it bother you that much?

I gave up smoking about 9 months ago. One of the best decisions I made in my life. I believe that most smokers are courteous to others. Even though I do have one friend who always has to blow smoke in my face at least once every time I see him. But he's still my friend.

While I'm all about protecting the freedoms of people to do what they want, I do think that school is no place for cigarettes simply because of the kids. I think even most smokers would admit smoking is a nasty, addictive habit that they hope their kids never take up.

gaytony said:

funny thing is, I am a non-smoker. Just pointing out the whole rights issue. My actual opinion: smoking in my car in the car pool lane at school..my right. Lighting up in the school cafeteria..not my right.

buz said:

" smoking in my car in the car pool lane at school..my right. ".....gaytony let's put aside our faith on this issue and let me restate my question to you. we all have 'rights' which entitle us to legally exercise that particular right...here is the question...do you believe b/c you have the legal 'right' to smoke in the school carpool lane that you 'absoultely' need to smoke or might there be a time when even though you have the right, you would suspend that right for the benefit of someone else ?

buz said:

truth,
congrats on quitting !!

truth said:

Thank you, Buz. It adds up to an initial savings of about $2.75 a day. I don't even want to think of the long term savings. I'd sure like to have the money and the health damage back.

For anyone out there contemplating: I know it is tough. I've quit 100 times before and started back 99 times. But it is worth the fight.

Kim said:

If you truly think schools are tobacco free, why do we have tobacco education classes for students when they are caught? For that matter, you should be at school on workdays or after the bell rings, because the administrators are the ones with chew in their cheeks.

Missy said:

If you're in the carpool lane at school, you're picking up or dropping off a child. And the reason you shouldn't smoke in the carpool line ("right to smoke" or not, "school rules" aside) is beside your child doesn't need to inhale your second-hand smoke.

This one isn't about smokers' rights, it's about children's health. If you're an adult and you want to smoke, that's your choice, but please don't do it around your children. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Think about it...

IF THE PRICE OF FUEL CONTINUES TO RISE THE CARPOOL MOMMIES WILL BE WAITING FOR SCHOOL BUSES THAT NEVER SHOW UP. THE "YANKEE" PROBLEM WILL DRY UP AS THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO AFFORD TO DRIVE SOUTH. THE YARD AND YELLOW DOGS WILL SHRIVLE ON THE BACKYARD CHAIN AS THE COST OF DOG FOOD [BEER] WILL SKYROCKET.ALL WE WILL BE LEFT WITH HERE IS TOBACCO, A COMMODITY COMMONLY USED AS CURRENCY IN PRISONS.

Trish said:

C'mon guys,

My whole family smokes and we're in perfect health. There is NO data suggesting that smoking kills, only liberal mainstream media accusations.

Also, I smoke in my full size truck with the windows down blaring George Strait. That's my right and no one can take it away! Unless you wanna date with my Smith and Wesson in the glove box or my Mossberg Pump in the rear window!

Dan said:

Good job quitting Truth, keep it up. I had my last cig on 12/31/99, decided to go smoke free for the new millenium. I can't stand to be around cigs now.

That being said, banning smoking in designated smoking areas (away from nonsmokers) at schools for persons 18 or older smacks of nannyism.

I was busy putting $50 of gas in my tank the other day and a woman pulls up. The passenger is smoking at a gas station while fuel is being dispensed and there are two small children in the back breathing the stuff. Some people have no sense.

buz said:

good golly ms. trish,
go have a smoke and calm down. is there no proof either that nicotene is highly additive ? whatever happened to common sense and logic ? getting nervy and edgy are several of the drawbacks to not having a regular dose of nicotene and the several hundred other chemicals that are put into cigs ( i smoked for 20 yrs ). smoking and g.strait must be awfully important to you if you are willing to shoot (kill) someone over them.....whoa !
i hope you and your whole family stay healthy, i watched my mother at an early age die of lung cancer (she smoked all her short life). i personally believe she may have been able to watch my two sons turn into wonderful men if she had not smoked, but that is my opinion.
