The Vietnam blunder repeats itself today

In light of the recent controversy surrounding Pat Robertson informing the world of the communist in Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, I was struck by the similarity to world events of 40 years ago.

At that time, our enlightened leaders in Washington decided that it was best to send thousands of our finest young Americans exactly halfway around the world to die in a war against a Third World country that had not even spit on an American. Meanwhile, just 90 miles off our coast sat a dictator who had publicly challenged the United States and had turned a relatively free country against us.

The irony of American policy at that time was sad at best. To have it occur again in my lifetime is a sin.

I'm not super-sharp on Cuban history - but it seems American troops were all set to help Castro until there was a political hick-up, the administration "turned away" from Castro. Castro then went to the USSR who eagarly helped him, and the rest, as they say is history.

Mr. Long, the travesty of the "sin" is that countless lives were lost senselessly due to military conflict. Lives lost then for nothing, just as now!

When will older men (Congress) learn that younger people CANNOT be sacrifaced for their political gain?

Thank God the majority of the country recoginizes Pat Robertson for the crack-pot he is.

Last time I checked he wasn't an elected or appointed goverment official, again, Thank God.

The difference between Vietnam is that this time an attack occurred on our own soil that killed thousands of civilians.

You can argue that Iraq didn't attack us. But their leaders are just as guilty of the same type of mindset of the terrorists who did attack us. They supported it and supported training terrorist for that purpose.

IMO, that is grounds for war and I believe the fight we are fightin is a just fight.

I do think, however, that there have been some major blunders along the way.

Darryl said:

When one reads the criteria for a "just war," it can be found that the conflict in Iraq does not meet ANY of the criteria.

I however, do disagree with the "just war" propostion. NO WAR IS JUST!

Ah! Thoughtcrime. Excellent.

truth said:

I wasn't referring to thoughtcrime. I was referring to terrorist training camps and the financial support that Saddam Hussein and his government gave to terrorists who were working against us and our global interest.

Thinking bad things, in and of itself, is no crime.

Darryl, I think every other post you have states NO WAR IS JUST!!!!!!! While many are split on Iraq & Nam, I think you and maybe a few other pacifists are the only ones on the planet who think WWII was not a just war.

Granted it was unjust for Germany, Italy & Japan to start that war, but they did. Was it just for the US of A and others to fight it and win? Just curious about your opinion on that.

Iraq did not attack us on 9/11. The hijackers had no connection to Iraq. They did have connections to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan - our 'friends' to this day. Iraq posed no direct threat to the U.S.
However, it is my understanding that Hussein did provide financial incentives to the families of Palestinian suicide bombers who conducted attacks in Israel. And since he has been out of power, those attacks have declined, Israel has agreed to withdraw from Palestinian territories and has actually followed through on that promise - significant progress. You can't directly attribute all of that progress to this one factor, but maybe that is the one good thing that has come out of this.
Still, the planning for the war was so incompetant, so unprepared for reality, it's unbelievable. They knew there were no wmd. They knew in July 2002 that they were going into iraq and that they were going to use wmd to sell the war to us. Yet still our guys didn't have the supplies and equipment they needed? It's a disgrace the way our leadership has failed our military. And us.
We should have a national referendum on not allowing any incumbents to run in the next election -- not a one of them. They have failed us. We need to get new leadership through and through.

LibrErica,

You'll get your wish as far as the incumbents go. I guarantee Bush will not be allowed to run for president in the next election.

truth said:

I guess I should have said George Bush. Jeb could always run.

Sam said:

LibrErica, I like that "no incumbents" idea! How do we get that moving?

A unified country has democratically elected it's leaders and is getting ready to sign a constitution.

Great analogy, Einstein.

Dan, as to what I feel about who should/should not have fought in WW II, that is not a point. My opinion on that is of no relevance, that conflict is over, no more battles for it will be fought, at least directly.

Regarding how I feel on war, I refer people to this web site; http://www.quaker.org/peaceweb/pdecla07.html.

This will state, in the venacular of the day in which it was written, my stand. I strive to hold to this Peace Witness in all that I do. This is one of a few "Witnesses" held by Friends.

Should there be other questions, I will strive to answer as best I can. However, people should realize that they may not agree with me. What must be remembered is that my Peace Witness comes from a conviction of the heart. Each person should come to these (conviction of the heart) at one's own leading. Each person must be fully persuaded in his/her own mind/heart.

LarryPorter- you said: A unified country has democratically elected it's leaders and is getting ready to sign a constitution.

what you left out is that Iraq's constitution & leadership is dangerously close to a THEOCRACY -- just like the 'moral majority' has swung the US towards a theocracy. only difference is the sheep's clothing -- the name of the religion. the fundamentalism is the same wolf.
