Offensive headline unfairly tags students
I'm writing in response to the offensive headline on Marta Hummel's Sept. 25 story, "Illegal students pass on N.C. plan."
As of last year's change to admissions rules, undocumented immigrants and their children can legally enroll in public colleges and universities, making the term "illegal student" wholly incorrect in addition to being blatantly biased. Why is it that even when undocumented immigrants are doing things they're entitled to do, we judge them by throwing the term "illegal" into the mix? Do they become "illegal shoppers" at the grocery store, too? And if one illegal act turns someone into an "illegal person," why is it that the rest of your paper doesn't reflect this when talking about American citizens? Following this logic, a drugstore owner who sells cigarettes to a minor should become an "illegal parent" when attending a PTA meeting.
In the future, please consider the impact before using biased language.

Rebecca, Undocumented=illegal. What part of this equation do you not understand? And please explain to me exactly WHAT they have done to EARN the right to enroll in an institution of higher learning (at the American taxpayers expense)?
Have they started the paperwork to become legal? Do they pay taxes? Do they contribute to the economy enough to pay for all the freebies they receive? Are they making an effort to learn English or are they still demanding we furnish them spanish-speaking teachers? How is their drain on the American taxpayer going to be reinbursed?
If you are so anxious to pay for one or two illegal students to go to college, do it with your own money. Just leave my tax dollar alone to pay for an AMERICAN kid to have an equal chance.
BTW, if there are any out of state students reading this, the university you are attending cannot legally require you to pay out of state tuition. It is discrimination as illegals are out of state and are not required to pay out of state tuition.

Using the term "undocumented" is just the politically correct way to say "illegal." The law recently passed that Ms. Mann refers to in her letter was passed in Illinois or Indiana. After some time that law was challenged and struck down as it circumvented the federal goverment's immigration process and was deemed unconstitutional because, as Yvonne writes, it discriminated against out of state students.
The law in NC states that in order for those students to receive in-state tuition they must have attended four years of school in NC. They must also be in the process of naturalization. The problem with this is that these students are here illegally for four years and are offered what equates to immunity for sucking monies from legal students. Not only are they allowed the immunity, but it would appear that the parents and sibilings are allowed this gratuity.
I am certain that this recent NC law will be challenged and defeated. The parents and students in the NC university and CC system need to challenge this before they lose out on opportunities for themselves.
It's high time that the INS put a stop to this flooding of our country. It's one thing to come here legally, it's another to sneak in here, suck off precious dollars in the school system for interpretors, have the feds pay for your health care at the ER, and then have the nerve to ask for a break on post-secondary education.

When I read this in the paper this morning, my first thought was of Yvonne, as this is one subject where we agree 100%. Nice post Yvonne & nice to agree with you too Schmoe.
This exemplifies that illegal immigration is a huge concern to many ends of the political spectrum and both sides of congress and the president totally ignore it. This is one of the areas where I think Bush's policy is deplorable. That's right Yvonne, I don't cowtow to the idea that everything Bush does is gospel.
I think Republicans ignore it because they don't want to alienate big businesses that hire illegals. Democrats because they are afraid to be seen as racist, mean spirited or violating their cherished causes of "inclusivness" and "diversity".
If any presidential candidate has the balls (including Hillary) to confront illegal immigration they will have a good chance of winning in '08. Watch out senators & congressmen too. I for one am sick of our government ignoring it and I'm sick of seeing signs everywhere in Spanish.

Ever notice that immigration doesn't work both ways? Ever notice that anyone illegally entering Mexico lands in jail? Yet Mexican authorities enjoy the $$ that their citizens send from our country. In my state even announcements in Target are in Spanish. As for illegal immigrants...as said before..the opeative word is ILLEGAL

Agree with all of ya 100%.
Yes, Rebecca, the fact that they are in our country illegally definitely taints everything they do while in our country illegally. The only thing I can't figure out is why our law enforcement will not enforce our laws?
Why will they not kick an illegal out of this country but they'll sure as fire send a deputy to kick me out of my house if I didn't pay my rent?

Holy moly, finally something we can all get on board with. Illegal, is illegal is illegal. If they are not supposed to be here then why the heck are they still here? I don't get it. I never will.

What is an illegal youth? A college capable youth (young adult) most likely didn't "choose" to be illegal. Yes, their parents searching for a way to make a living came to this country under pretense, and because our economy needs many of these workers there is a "shadow" class of resident in our country. We require social security and income taxes be withheld on these workers. We require unemployment and State taxes withheld. Property taxes are paid on their residences. Yet they cannot claim Social Security benefits and cannot claim unemployment.
I grew up on the American side of the Mexican border. Our road was the last one before Mexico. We had laborers on our ranch who worked from sunup to sundown. My parents provided the car for their children to attend school. We paid for the attorneys to "make them legal". My memories of my father taking us to the orphanages in Tijuana to bring whatever we could from grocery store stales and throw away clothes and the tears of thanks bring tears to my eyes as I write this. I shared a bed with my Dad and Brother in boarding houses. Lived in a silver travel trailer as he sold shoes. He became successful after I left home and I am greatful to have grown up in poverty. I will probably pay more in taxes this year than 250 average Americans combined. It is a privelege to do so. I have established a charity to provide college tuition for children from foster homes. Yet all that I could do will never be enough to remove the haunting memories of those orphanages.
"Though I give all my goods to feed the poor...and have not charity it profiteth me nothing". What kind of American can stand on the riches and sacrifices of others and deny a qualified youth the same opportunity? I may be a staunch conservative but I am a member of the human race and hope that humanity means a bit more. Thank you Rebecca Mann for reminding me of these little ones.

Oh, how George Orwell would be proud of sweet little naive Rebecca Mann. She lives in her cookies and cream world, where we all hold hands while circling around the mulberry bush.
The very act of coming into this country without following the procedures that millions of honest immigrants have done in the past, tell us that they do not care a wit about the American system. They are here as slave labor, being exploited by people like Rebecca Mann to do menial tasks that she will not waist her time in doing. So, in reality, Ms. Mann is not the concerned citizen she is trying to portray herself as, but is in fact just another version of the coyotes that prey on the ILLEGALS at the border, when they cross.
