Taking illegal students defies common sense

The Sept. 25 article about North Carolina schools passing rules to allow illegal students defies both logic and common sense. These are supposedly "institutions of higher learning," so I wonder what part of "illegal" do they not understand?

I can understand goofballs such as President Bush pandering to illegal aliens for political reasons. But when our nation's universities and colleges do it, we can only surmise that sophistry is the order of the day.

Why not also have drug stores that welcome addicts and malls that open their doors to thieves and criminals? I mean, hey, these folks have to get along in life just like the illegal aliens, right?

In fact, since our addicts and criminals are American citizens, they should have at least the same benefits as illegal aliens.

People such as Deborah Kelly (executive director of Centro de Accion Latino) probably have decent, albeit, misguided motives. Enlightened observers say that Kelly and her ilk must not even realize that they pose a greater threat to our nation than does al-Qaida or any terrorist organization. Our nation cannot be defeated by armed forces -- but it could crumble from within because of our own stupidity.

I've often wondered why INS doesn't go and check public schools out for illegals. Better yet, hang out at the ER that seems to be the place to go for "free" health care if you are an illegal alien.

Ed Creamean,

Since you're in Danville, VA., maybe you can tell us in little ole Greensboro exactly how an area nonprofit is more dangerous to the 'Amuricun' way than Al Qaeda.

Remember Bin Laden? Seems like his 'ilk' like to strap bombs on themselves and blow up others. I've never once seen anyone in Greensboro who tries to help other human beings do that. Maybe since I live here in Greensboro I might not see the whole picture.

Then again, I know Ms. Kelly personally and I think she is guided by her beliefs and conscience, rather than fear. Maybe, Ed, maybe you can take a lesson from her. See, down here in little ole Greensboro some folks care about others, despite their 'legal' status.

How prejudice and protectionism can be taken to the level of denying the most helpless and most dedicated to doing better a chance to obtain this freedom scares me. It infers that we must protect ignorance. Trust me, ignorance is not endangered, but willing talented youth trying to do better by pursuing a college degree are endangered. Thomas Jefferson wrote "I have sworn upon the alter of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man".

If they want to seek higher education fine. Just become a legal member of the country first. Or get a student Visa, or any number of other ways to remove the illegal part of your status. I'm so sick and tired of people talking about the rights of illegal aliens. Illegal.......this word is not up for argument. Illegal, meaning not legal. Meaning they are in this country without the legal right to be here. Either become legal or leave. You are not a member of this country, and thereby you should not have the same rights or privilages.

I found great comfort in the last part of your last line in your article: "...it could crumble from within because of our own stupidity."

You should have titled it this way and then your comments would have held a greater sense of focus and you would then be recognized as an expert in the subject matter.

As you only make accusations without proof on the behalf of "illegal" residents of our community and Deborah Kelly, I consider your words meaningless ramblings of a Monday morning quarterback, without merit and filled with envy.

I have an extensive knowledge on both topics and I can assure you that she is indeed filled with the best of intentions, which are not misguided, and the "illegals" that you refer to, simply want the same things in life that we do, an equal chance to provide for their families. Our memories are very short...we were all undocumented illegals at some point in our family history.

Why does this notion frighten you?
