Don't be hoodwinked by hotel room rates
I have been reading all the complaints about hotel room charges for the High Point furniture market versus the Las Vegas market. Beware! Las Vegas will get you.
I attend three shows a year there, and the room rates are very inflated. In checking my expense accounts for 2005, I spent 16 nights in Las Vegas. The average nightly charge was $180.05. Last March, we were charged $240 for the Marriott Suites.
I am going again the week of Jan. 16, and the following rates are shown on the Internet: Mirage, $217; Harrah's, $248; Bellagio, $273; Treasure Island, $173; New York/New York, $184; MGM, $202.
People need to understand that the good rates given now in Las Vegas will not remain.

I'm thinking you might have overpaid on those rooms. When I did my own research on the internet, I was able to stay at the New York New York for an average of $45 a night just a few years ago. Other hotels were cheaper but I really liked New York New York.
But the rooms were only the start. The food was incredibly cheap. I remember getting a 20 ounce porterhouse steak with salad and baked potato and beverage for $2.99.
Of course, I still prefer High Point over Vegas.
The one thing High Point has going for it is that it is a unique event and people can immerse themselves in North Carolina Culture. For all its claims, the only culture in Vegas is a seedy underground one of prostitution and porn.
I don't think High Point should try to 'be' Vegas. I do think that raising the prices at restaurants all over the triad during Market should be considered price gouging and prosecuted. Restaurant owners should appreciate the profit they are getting by having sold out crowds and not be greedy.

The issue is not how much you have to pay for a room, but the difference between what that room would have cost you a week before versus what you pay for it durring market week. All cities price gouge to some extent based on the tourist season for that are. For heavens sake, look at Myrtle Beach. 215.00 a night for a room with two beds in the summer. Same room in December 45.00. Wehn you put that together with palces to eat raising prices and rental cars I can see why they think they are getting took. After all, these are generally adults not families traveling here for market. I bet a lot of them are even single, so of course they would think hey Vegas is Vegas baby. Can they realyl say the same about High Point North Carolina? No, and personally I don't want them to. The people who come here for Market are going to come here because it isn't Vegas. It is just time that someone stepped in and told these business owners not to rip off our marketers. I wonder if Enterprise in Vegas raised their rates the week their market was there? Somehow I bet not.

Let's see, Head of the Market Authority retires, Market changes it's dates, contiuous uproar about hotel rates, Market attendance down this year...seems to me like Vegas is already taking it's toll on the HP Market and it's only going to get worse.

Truth
Prostitution is against the law in Las Vegas.
The police work this hard.
As for porn, you will find no more there than in Greensboro, if you take in account populution.
As for those folks handing out ads on strip, LV passed a law against this, but the ACLU sued and got the law over turned.I have not been to Vegas since 9/11 (wife does not like to fly now)I doubt there are any porn shops left on the strip, the Casinos where buying them out. As for room rates they what you want to pay. You can start by asking for casino rates. And they are not hard to get FREE. I got them free on New Years 2000. I am a very tight! So I do very little gambling. You get what you ask for in Vegas, but you must whine nicely. And you can walk the strip at night, with out fear of mugging, the casinos do not like their customers money being stole. ( they want it)
