Photo of young Marine tells us much about war
Look at the face of the young Marine (front page, Oct. 26). There are so many emotions on his face. I see bewilderment, fear, sadness, astonishment, loss and loneliness. Why? A roadside bomb killed 14 Marines, many from his platoon. The number of reported U.S. fatalities in the Iraq war reached 2,000 on Oct. 25.
I would like to ask this Marine, after he's had to watch his comrades fall by the wayside, to express his thoughts on the way the Iraqi “detainees” were treated -- actions that resulted in the most ridiculous miscarriage of military justice of late. While 2,000 of our brave soldiers have been slain, these "detainees" are still alive and would kill again if they had the opportunity. Pardon me if I feel nauseous.
As a veteran of the Vietnam conflict and one who has befriended numerous survivors of WWII, I know the United States of America is in a war. A deadly war where the enemy will do unto you before you do unto them. They should be treated as the deadly enemy they are and not mollycoddled, don't you think?
Just remember the look on that young Marine's face.

These detainees you speak of wanting to harm, many have been set free because they were found to be innocent.
It is sad that so many of our citizens will have to live with the horrors of war for the rest of their lives, but to advocate harming non-tried prisoners of war is (imo) an emotionially based irrational thought process that places your kind right with the detainees. The guilty ones.

I agree with you,CK. But what about those 'detainees' that are on hunger strike? Or don't have enough bathroom tissue to suit the aclu? What about the detainees that have no lawyer from the aclu to represent them?
"Just remember the look on that young man's face". What about the look on Michael Moore's face the day after the 2004 election? This is true hardship to the left in this country.

Well said, Mr.
Harper. I logged in only to remind Mr. Caldwell that not all of the prisoners in Iraqi prisons were guilty. In fact we've been letting the innocent one go in droves.
The fact that Mr. Caldwell is nauseous at the innocent walking free speaks volumes: It is a sad time when our need for revenge consumes us.

The prisoners that have been held for years without charges, with no trial in sight?
Those prisoners?
As Americans, we are better than that- we stand for rights and the rule of law. Suggesting that we take the "low road" in this case proves that you are truly unAmerican.
Quit pissing on the ideals that make my country great.

While I am very interested in what the soldiers there think about what is going on to ask this soldier who just watched his buddies die this question about the torture at this moment is wrong and even distasteful. There are many questions to ask him but this is not one.
More important I think those who would hope he condemned the torture would be in for a surprise to how he would have answered that question at that moment.

now do you think he would honestly tell you what he's thinking? we can only imagine and thats about it. wait until he has been discharged and then ask him. also, lets hope he lives long enough to speak his mind.

I too wonder what the soldiers will say when they are free to speak. An eye for an eye is from the Old Testament, before Jesus' time. If we are truly a Christian nation, we need to look at our actions.
Also have to point out a pet peeve. Nauseous means that something causes nausea, as in a nauseous smell. The correct word when you feel sick is nauseated.

Our friend TRISH once directed my to a Military site, where the boys in uniform often post from Iraq.
The thread that caught my eye was the one where the guy wrote an open letter to his Wife, asking for understanding when he came home - because when he came home, he would be difficult, super high-strung* and generally uncontrollable.
*high-strung: in a tense state, edgy, jittery, jumpy, nervy, restive, uptight.

Another military divorce in the making.....
But on a lighter note, ...
well, I guess there are no lighter notes when it comes to subjecting young men and women to war, having them fight battles that aren't theirs to fight.

Well since it would seem that no one writing has a clue of what they are saying much less of what this young man is thinking about. Unless you have been there, and experienced what he is thinking about then you are totally clueless.
As to asking him a dumb question as the writer or any of the rest of you put forth, I can tell you what I would have answered or perhaps how I would have answered. I would have placed the butt of the weapon laying across his lap in your mouth and my boot in your posterier.
I can assure you he doesn't give a hoot in hell about a detainee or anything else right at that moment other that the well being of the rest of his unit and being thankful that he is alive.
I have seen the look hundreds of times, and I have had the look probably as many times. I can assure you, you would not have wanted to ask me any question at that point.
Now before you attempt to sermonize at my comments I wil offer a suggestion. If you aint been there, aint experienced it SHUT UP.
That's all I got to say on the subject, the rest of you arm chair soldiers can opion away and attempt to impress yourselfs with your ignorance.

First, I feel that it it totally rude to say that ANY question is dumb! While a specific question may be asked at an inopportune time, the only DUMB question is the question that is NEVER ASKED!
While each of us who view the photograph of the soldier can see different things in his expression, only he and he alone know what is going through his mind.
I personally see fear, apprehension, and distaste in his face. I also see a questioning there as well. I can imagine what would be going through my mind had I mad the mistake to forsake a peace witness/testimony and seek to kill my fellow humans.
I do not know the reasons that this young man joined the military. I can only pray that he will return to his homeland safe and that he will be reunited with his family. I also pray that he will learn war no more after his experiences in Iraq.
I also hope that his mind has not been so tarnished by military/governmental thought that he can no longer think for himself as an INDIVIDUAL not a puppet.
Shalom
