Day-care regulations overlook experience

I am writing in regard to the article, "New day-care ratings worry owners" (Nov. 13).

All I have ever done is take care of children. I have run a day care in my home. I was a foster mother with the Children's Home Society for 20 years. I have worked in a day care, and now I have the honor of caring for my six grandchildren.

Would I be able to get a job at a day care? No. The state tells me that I do not have the proper education. I would like to think that I do, however, have the experience. Some people have a gift of caring for children.

Becky, You are a wonderful person.

Thank-you for all the love and care you've given to the foster kids that have been blessed to have been in your charge.

It's people like you who affect kids live's for the better. Society would be a better place if more people had your compassion.

Becky, once again you have legislators and regulators making rules instead of the people who do the jobs.

My granddaughter stayed at Rose's Day Care which had the most wonderful older women to love and care for the children. I don't know what their educational background was, but I saw the love and that is all that mattered. You seem like one of those wonderful ladies. Increased and expensive regulations caused that wonderful day care to close.

No Child Left Behind requires teaching assistants to have a 2 year degree. This excludes many wonderful, talented, and capable people. The educational requirements were upped, but the salary stayed the same...way too low for the wonderful job most do.
