Does Bush get credit for falling gas prices?

I recall gas prices hitting more than $3 a gallon and it was President Bush's fault. If it was his fault (as some said), why don't we now give him credit for the current price, which is less than $2 a gallon?

Those of you who believe the president has control of the price of gasoline should be thanking him for persuading the big oil companies to lower the price.

Silly me. I forgot you only look for negative things to happen to this president and our country.

Don, I think the falling gas prices are negative side effect of the Bush/Rove hurricane generating weather control device.

That dynamic duo was spending so much time on creating and directing hurricanes to minority areas of the Gulf Coast that they forgot to completely wipe out the refineries and oil transportation infrastructure.

As they sit back and smoke cigars while petting their cats I suspect they'll remedy the issue and make up for it next year. (It's too late to do it this year as a series of winter hurricanes would create suspicions than might reveal their sinister plans)

You wanna give credit?

Gas was $1.53 when Bush when to Washington, that's a 33% increase in 5 years.

Silly N-R for printing this letter based on bogus factoids.

IS THERE AN EDITOR IN THE HOUSE?

Unless you can prove gas prices would have remained low if Bush had not been in office, then your point is moot.

Bunny:

How about if you prove he did anything to lower the cost.

Here's a fun chart from Joe Citizen:

http://www.randomuseless.info/gasprice/gasprice.html

We won't need to discuss the secret meetings between Dick Cheney, Kenny "infamous" Lay and other "industry leaders" about energy ... or the Cheney and his best friend Scalia duck hunt that, surprise surprise was shortly followed by a Supreme Court ruling that kept secret the list of meeting attendees ... or the industry leaders and meeting attendees that recent bold-face lied to congress because they were "not under oath" (if your fingers are crossed it's only fibbing, and then it's be ok) ... or the multi-billion dollar corporate welfare checks recently signed for poor Exxon.

All I was said was I do not consider a 33% raise much of an accomplishment.

Tell ya what - you give me $2 bucks, I'll let you talk me into returning 50 cents - then you can tell the world what a good job you persuading me to lower the price.

JDR, can you find any links showing conspiracy in creating the Bush/Rove hurricane generating weather device? Thanks.

If I had made such a statement of fact, then it would be up to me to prove it. I made no such statement though, did I?

And sorry, I don't consider Joe Citizen type sites as credible documentation of anything.

... naaa, can't find a connection to Hurricanes, Hugh. I am disappointed at how my share of the 100 Billion dollars was spent in the past 4 years in Preparation for Natural Disasters.

Bunny - you tickle me. Some guy - probably like your grandfather, keeps a 20 year personal log of what he pays for gas, and you diss' it.

I'll repeat what some lady once said on the Hannity show: "You know, Sean, I get all my news for you and Ruch and I can't believe how misinformed America's are."

I'll also repeat what Rush recently said: "My listeners don't know what to think until they hear it from me."

JDR, you give Rush too much credit. He's an entertainer/commentator.

Pompus ego is part of his show character.

All I know is I'm glad the gas prices are FINALLY falling. I still think we got gouged and are still being gouged. (Good thing Perot wasn't elected. I remember him calling for a 50 cent/gallon gas tax)

Cheney's lack of transparency in dealing with the Energy execs is alarming. That's not behavior suitable for elected officials, IMO.

I think the reason this letter was written is because many folks blathered about it being Bush's fault that gas reached $3 a gallon. This letter is basically saying that if you're going to give credit for bad, give credit when it goes the other way. Personally, I'm not giving him credit for either.

Denzien [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

This liberal never said it was Bush's fault gas prices went through the roof- aside from his usual fellation of the Saudis, there's not a whole lot Bush can do. Prices are largely determined by energy futures traders- that's why there's a special place in hell for them. :P

"JDR, you give Rush too much credit. He's an entertainer/commentator."

When letters like this and the one referencing Murtha show up on the Op/Ed page, I have to wonder if you're misunderestimationizing Rush.

Let's give Bush some credit:

He attacked a country with no links to 9/11.

He claimed things that CIA sources had already
discredited.

The last book he read was "My Pet Goat"

He claimed Iraqi oil would pay for his war.

He said "Mission Accomplished"

He gave us "Heckuva Job Brownie"

He had operatives smear John McCain in South Carolina and "Swift Boat" John Kerry. (Note: Both those men served their country IN Vietnam)

He cried "Terror" every time his poll ratings droppped until the people became complacent.

I believe in giving a man his "attaboys" when he deserves them......Mission Accomplished!

Denzien [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Remember when Rumsfeld was up at the podium, telling reporters that tourism dollars would also help with reconstruction?

What a hoot.

You're having trouble understanding my point, aren't you? I never DISPUTED your statement, I merely asked you to back up what you stated as a fact. There's a difference. Again, my point is, you can NOT prove that gas would have remained low under another president just as I can not prove it would have risen (which is why I never made that statement). :-)

So JDR let me ask you, since you obviously heard a lady on Hannity’s show and heard Rush, are we to take that YOU actually listen to these shows? And if you are listening what makes you so much more elevated then other listeners to the show? Because I have seen you put down listeners to these shows, yet you are listening to, so what’s the difference?

hugh [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

JDR, I want to talk bass compressor foot pedals with you some time.

James D. Rockefeller [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

ya know bunny - I'm not have trouble "understanding"; we both know it would be near-if-not-fully impossible to "prove".

Perhaps we need to inform the original letter writer.

I will say this - we have never had a president who's has been so tightly connected to the oil industry - so if any one could do anything through personal charm, it would be the Bush Dynasty.

We also have an adminstration that is dangerously tight with the oil-industry, secrative to a fault, values loyalty above talent, and has more balls and less humility than healthy.

All in my humble opinion, of course.

James D. Rockefeller [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Trish: That's a fair question.

I go out of my way to be informed. That means the BBC and CS Monitor in the wee hours, NPR on the morning drive to work, and maybe one a month Rush at lunch or Hannity on the way home (although usually the CD player wins then) - so yes I occasionally listen to Rush and Hannity.

... but not much - because typically after 10 or 15 minutes - their good points (and they do have them) get smeared by either obvious partisan attacks or deliberate overlook of the coin’s other side.

Listening to them is like hearing the defense attorney only - "If it fit's you must acquit." Yea, right. Here’s an example I have used before:

When Bush was promoting his Social Security reforms, Hannity was touting: "Hey, it's only 4%, who can't afford to risk 4%?" Sounded good - but listening closly - he was framing your 4% salary contribution as 4% of the total SS program - when he knows full well is represents 1/3 of the SS program - he was deliberately lying to the fool-hardy masses.

Now it could be I happen to tune in on those rare times when by saying stupid or partisan things they ruin what could be a valid argument - but I don’t think so. It is really interesting when you figure how little I hear them - perhaps 15 minutes each per month - yet these gem-quotes always seem to happen.

MANY folks listen to them as their conservative gospel. Some folks think them only entertaining. I do catch a little here and there to check out ideas, but over all, they are a danger to America.

If you know that your statement would be all but impossible to prove, why did you make it? I wouldn't want someone to question your credibility in the future as you post other facts. Just a thought. btw, this is something than many people on these blogs could be more careful of as they make statements!

And again, I don't dispute your points about Bush and his connections to the oil industry. My only problem was your stating as fact something that could not be proven.

Friends? :-)

James D. Rockefeller [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Bunny - Friends OK - but the statement I made was was gas prices are up 133% - and I can prove that.

What I can't prove is whether or not B43 held thme prices down.

Frankly - I'd be THRILLED if more evidence were offered here instead of opinions. I think you agree.

I've a plan: Let's not reelect any sitting senator or congress person and get a libertarian in the oval office.Or better yet, let's put a housewife in the oval office - one that has to operate her home on a budget cause there is more month left at the end of the family paycheck.

I don't think he has control, just influence. But to give credit where credit is due... Thanks Mr. President. Thanks for doing your job.

To the letter writer: The next time you go through a drive through, remember to thank the cashier for making sure your order was right. I know, the cashier isn't responsible for making the food, but does have influence on the sandwich makers and fry people.

bgh, Good idea. I'm behind you on this one. I could only hope most of the voters would be also. Just wipe the slate clean and start over. The new crew couldn't screw up as badly as the ones in there now. At least, not for a while. It would take them a couple of years to learn how to stick it to us and make it seem as if they are helping.
