A lot of road money goes to other purposes
In the Jan. 3 "Mixing it up," Sandy Carmany discusses the North Carolina highway system's 78,000-plus miles of roads, leading us to believe that the road tax money is used to maintain our highways and rural roads.
She failed to mention that $252 million was transferred from the state's Highway Trust Fund to the operating fund. Sandy probably was not aware of this. Read the Jan. 3 article, "Outcry over fuel cost stirs Democrats to act."

And how much of that money has gone into the pockets of Steve DeWitt and all his friends in the DOT? The DOT is a crooked as the day is long. Your new roads aren't built to last because they give the jobs to whomever will pay the PE's the most. Then the PE's and company will turn their backs (usually they are no where to be found along with all the rest of the DOT employees) and let the contractor do as he pleases, which usually means cutting a lot of corners and doing shoddy work. Then, when the road falls apart in 2 years instead of 15, there is no maintenance money. Hmmmmm, sure sounds fishy. But that's the way of North Carolina.

TJ, It's not just NC that diverts monies away from their intended purposes. If you will remember, that is what has happened to SS for more years than I can remember. The government has dipped into SS and left IOU notes for so long, SS will be no more in a few years. And the American people keep voting the perpertrators back into office (for as log as they can be voted in).
As a friend of mine, Steve, said recently, "the USA is f***ed and the people are being socially engineered to apathy.". Anyone who wants to change things is way behind. But a start begins with the first step. Learn about candidates, check their voting records on issues, just become informed. Then vote out those who are bought and paid for by special interest groups. Even if this means voting in newcomers who aren't known to be affilitated with repubs or dems.
We, the American people, can have over fifty candidates represent us in a Miss America pagent but only two political parties. How much sense does this make? If we had more of a choice come election day, perhaps some of the corruption that exists in the current political system could be erradicated. It's worth a try.

Steve is a friend of yours? I'd find other "friends" because he is one of the ones helping to "f^^^" the people of NC. This is first-hand knowledge, not hearsay. He should have been thrown out of the DOT back when they supposedly "cleaned house". He cares about nothing but money - period. He'd probably screw his own family if it meant more money for him!

TJ, A different Steve than Dewitt. I had to go back and read your original post to figure out what you meant. My friend, Steve, was a regular here in this forum for a number of months. He was booted for using profanity, although others used worse and got away with it. He has his own blog now and this was in one of his posts. Sorry for the confusion.
