Appalachian State deserves bigger story
As most everyone who is a sports fan is aware, Appalachian State University won the Division I-AA Football Championship on Dec. 16. Being an Appalachian graduate, I was very excited to watch my team fight for a victory. I was, however, hosting a Christmas party that evening, so I was not able to watch the entire game. I was anticipating reading all about the sweet victory the following morning in the News & Record. Much to my disappointment, I got the paper first thing, only to find a small write-up on the front page of the sports section, followed by a huge article on girl's high school basketball. What?
There are hundreds of Appalachian graduates in this area. I feel that the local newspaper owes our school a bit more coverage, especially since Appalachian is the first North Carolina school to ever win a national football championship in any division!
Appalachian deserves huge congratulations for its record-setting year, not a half-page story.

Go Mountaineers! How's that?
I understand your frustration with the Pro UNC News & Record Sports Page---I'm a Wake Forest Grad.
If they would take Bruce Buchanan off the school beat and put him in sports, I think everything would improve for schools other than UNC-Chapel Hill.

Mr. Clark, it was only a I-AA championship! That is considered second-class!

Ok, let me clarify since my "sarcastic" notation was omitted from the first post.
Mr. Clark, my comments are made with sarcastic overtones. I am in full and total agreement with you regarding the coverage of the Mountaineers Championship. What is even more saddening is that the game was played in Knoxville, TN. This is only about six hours away (at best)!

While I agree the N&R needs to pay more attention to schools outside of the ACC, I do have a correction to your letter. Appalachian is NOT the first NC school to win a national football championship. Elon has won 2 - one in 1980 and one in 1981.

I was the one who wrote the article and wanted to make a few comments on what I originally wrote and make a slight correction to a statement I made. First of all, I feel there are more than hundreds of graduates in the area.... more like thousands! And yes, I know that Elon won a football championship, but it was not an NCAA Championship, but rather an NAIA National Football Championship. Still, Elon definitely deserves the recognition for being an NC school to win a National Football Championship- I apologize for the incorrect statement. Thank you all who have commented and shared in my view of App State not getting the recognition they deserve!

I could not agree with you more, Mr. Clark. I too wrote an editorial after the semi-final game. However, mine was never printed (or at least if it was, I missed it). I did get a long explanatory letter from the Sports editor justifying his actions in not covering the semi-final game on the front page. However, I still think it deserved to be covered on the front page since the semi-final win was such an historic event for one of the schools in the North Carolina State University System. His suggestion, which is something I'm seriously considering, is to subscribe to the Winston Salem Journal. Their stories were much more comprehensive than anything the News and Record produced.
