Iraq and Vietnam: A history lesson
I keep reading about how the recent elections in Iraq justify George W. Bush's policies. Perhaps a historical perspective is needed.
In the book, "The Vietnam Experience: America Takes Over 1965-67," authors Edward Doyle and Samuel Lipsman write, "September 3, 1967, 4:00 p.m. Election day in South Vietnam. The polls in the country's forty-four provinces and municipalities were closing. It had been a busy day. In nine hours, 4,868,266 people out of 5,853,251 registered voters had visited thousands of polling stations to cast their votes for president, an 83 percent turnout."
This election took place less than five months before the surprise Tet offensive of the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong began. This was followed by seven more years of war, during which time an additional million or so Vietnamese were killed, along with 25,000-30,000 Americans.
But don't worry. History never repeats itself.
Right?

Dana,
Unfortunately, many either ignore your points or take to arguing them without rational thought. You are correct in your assesment and the similarities are stark. And while there are many parallels, one can only hope that good people in both parties will begin to question a President and VICE President about the real reasons for going into Iraq.
"Support our troops, but question our leaders"

Unfortunately Doyle and Lipman fail to grasp the most important point: history has shown that the Vietnamese didn't want ANY foreign intervention within their borders. French, British, or American. They decided to screw-up the country on their own.
After the French, British, and Americans left S.E.Asia, the war was essentially over. The objectives of the Vietnamese were met.
The difference within Iraq is totally different.
Let me pose a question, If we,, the Americans left today, all troops were removed, would the killing of Americans (non-Muslims), stop, or would they continue?
They would continue!
Once we left SE Asia, the story was over.
However,OBL and his cronies have vowed to kill Americans or anyone from the West, anywhere and at any time. I'm sure you remember 9/11/2001,
that occured in NEW YORK CITY, not Bagdad or Rammadi.
If we were to leave the Iraq today, would the killing of Americans continue or cease? A little
hint, don't forget about Bali, London, or Spain either.
For this precise reason, Iraq is not VietNam.

Unfortunately, some others do not see the rationale either.
If the Iraqi people had wanted freedom, they would have been taking measures to obtain that without having a foreign power invade for yet to be determined reasons. The Vietnamese did not want freedom either, had that wanted such, they would have been more actively participating to ensure same.
This is true, to me, with the Iraqi people as well. If they wanted the freedom that has been given them, then they would be working vehemently to identify the insurgents and working towards a more democratic Iraq. Actions speak MUCH louder than words and I believe the actions of the Iraqi people are VERY CLEAR!

More great responses...
Don, I must state this again. IRAQ did not attack the USA on 9/11. It is apples and oranges, remember the planes were highjacked by terrorists, most from SAUDI ARABIA. They are all DEAD. We never thought Bin Ladin was in Iraq, so why go there???? I think Bush and Company used 9/11 to start a war they had planned in advance..create hatred and fear and demand vengence, all in the name of God. That is the worst part to me.
Unpatriotic was the catch word then. Now it is Bush Haters. Spin city tactics really are pitiful.
Over 50,000 young people of my generation lost their lives in Vietnam. I never thought it would happen again, but I was oh so wrong. Where were the young people in the last election? Were they clueless or just apathetic? They have lost over 2,000 in a senseless war. How many will it take before they march on Washington?

Here's an interesting column comparing President Bush and President Polk (pre-civil war). I can't seem to get it to come up as a link, so you'll have to cut and paste. It's worth the effort, though.

Amazing how the left never stops trying to revive their glory days of riding around in the little flower painted micro-buses, smoking their weed and chanting 'hell no we won't go'. Sorry, this is a different era.
The difference between vietnam and iraq is that the military is running the war against the rag...ahem, iraqi freedom fighters and not someone sitting behind a desk 10,000 miles away.
"Where was the young people last election"?
Many of them were in the voting booth electing George W. Bush to a second term.
And a great deal of them were volunteering to fight the terrorists in iraq and elsewhere.Thank God!
Many of them do not hate america or the president. Many of them do support our troops AND the war on terror. Many of them see questions like "how many will it take before they march on washington" as aid and comfort to an enemy that knows as long as there are people in america who lack the backbone for the war, all they have to do is wait for enough people to 'march on washington' and they (america) will turn tail and run as the white flag democrats want .

neocon,
your responses are laughable. So you believe all democrats are weed smoking hippies?
lol, most of the pot heads I know are strong supporters of your messiah, g w bush.
By the way, there were very few terrorists in Iraq before America the great liberator of all those oppressed invaded and began to occupy a soverign country.
Thats fact and cannot be disputed.

Brian,
I actually agree with you! Well put too.
Someone once said, "There are plenty of high school dropouts who are conservatives, but not too many liberals fit into that category".
Posted on January 4, 2006 10:11 PM
Brian Harper, where did I state that all democrats were pot smoking hippies? Nowhere! I was simply pointing out all the wishful thinking of the anti-war crowd who keep trying to make the iraq-vietnam connection. They are living in the past.
"There were very few terrorists in iraq before America, the great liberator of all those oppressed invaded and began to occupy a sovering country". -I can almost see the curl of the lip here.lol
It must be hell for one who holds the military in such diddain to see the progress they are making in iraq. Free elections etc... But don't give up hope! There is always the chance that the tide will turn and America will suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of the terrorists and you guys can say "see just like nam", we knew it all along!

Carol Dunn,
With all of your "Liberal" diatribe, you failed to answer the questions, Once our troops left Vietnam, did the North Vietnamese (other than the folks who moved here for a better life) follow or troops to America to continue their war against us? No, they did not.
On the other hand, if our troops were to leave Iraq today, would the Islamo-Fascists stay in Iraq, or would they choose to follow us to the United States? Remember, they were here on 9/11/2001, and they already know how to get here.
Now the question becomes, would you rather the most lethal armed forces(the U.S.)in the world, fight these cowards in Iraq, or let the cowards fill their cars with bombs, and perhaps take a Sunday drive through Greensboro, or perhaps the Lincoln Tunnel? And to say that perhaps they won't follow or bother us, well, Bill Clinton said that, and 3000 inocent civilians died on that day.
I prefer that they fight in Iraq.
As far as your nonsense of Iraq not being involved in 9/11, I won't even bother. The young people of today, regardless of their liberal indoctrination of our current educational
system, our young are far from clueless or apathetic.
If you want to affix names or titles, the only clueless and or apathtic person is the "Hugh Hefner" wannaabe, Bill Clinton, and his fellow kool aid drinkers.
He squandered 8 years of a supposed Presidency and was more interested in Monica, than National Security. Just google Monsor Ijaz (not sure of the spelling of the last name), he tried TWICE to broker the deal to have OBL sent from the Sudan over here, or to Saudi Arabia. His excuse, he didn't have any place to put him. That would have been simple, he could have used the President's bedroom, he was never there!
P.S. Honestly, I know how you feel, I was a third generation "Liberal" Democrat, who was educated in the Big Apple!

DONPBDC,
Your information is so unbelieveably skewed that one must suspect your employement is with one of the Bush's cronies.
Well, just to let you know, I fought traffic in Winston-Salem yesterday so my wife would not have to fight it here in Greensboro.

"I fought traffic in winston-salem yesterday so my wife wouldn't have to fight it here in Greensboro"...
And you have the brass to suggest that conservatives are made up primarily of dropouts.
Good post donpbdc. Apparently the liberals don't give a damn if the terrorists follow us here.
Posted on January 5, 2006 11:29 AM
neocon, If you think the terrorists are not already here, you are better at self-delusion than me. They are not as overt, but they are here just the same.
Posted on January 6, 2006 1:41 PM
Yvonne, I know there are terrorists here, dear. That is why W is trying to find out who and where they are. A good thing, no?
