Some Bush critics misrepresent facts

Michael Northuis' Counterpoint, "Facts show the folly of war in Iraq" (Dec. 15), was offensive and grossly inaccurate.

Northuis says Bush "cherry picked" intelligence given to the Senate, which authorized war. The bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, along with the Robb-Silverman report, disagreed. Northuis says Bush stated Saddam could send a nuke here in 45 minutes. Bush never said any such thing. Northuis quotes Joe Wilson's findings on his trip to Niger, which the Senate Intelligence Committee found to be distorted and untrue, inaccurate and unsubstantiated. Northuis says Bush has silenced the press here in the United States. What a statement! Northuis must never read newspapers, magazines or watch television news.

While 70 percent of Iraqis went to the polls to vote for their democratic leaders, Northuis says 80 percent of them want us out and 45 percent want us dead. The truth is that 75 percent of Iraqis express confidence in the elections, 71 percent say their lives are going well, and 69 percent expect things for the country overall to improve in the next year.

Bush-haters need to stop visiting those left-wing Web sites.

Mr. Goodman,
Why is anyone who disagrees with the President, a "Bush-Hater"? I for one, do not hate the President, but rather am afraid of the team he has assembled. They operate in secret, they rarely hold press conferences, and they NEVER appear before the American people!! That's right. They only appear before crowds that contain folks like you who agree with every word they utter. The President lost his credibility by the arrogance he displays toward dissenting opinion---he is now so paranoid as to cry harm at every turn. But the very worst was the manipulation of the color code he created---notice that after the election, he quit running around yelling "Terror, Terror, Terror". Not because the threat was reduced, but because he was no longer running for re-election and his inside polling showed people were beginning to get suspicious when he trotted this out every time his own poll numbers dropped. Hating Bush is not an option. I feel for him and I feel for his family. Most of all, I feel for all of us who are being minimized by his efforts. He underestimates the intelligence of this country. My staunch Republican friends, tell me that now, even they would not vote for him. All removed the "W" stickers off their cars after "Heckuva Job Brownie" and the New Orleans fiasco. That is when arrogance rose above any sense of obligation to people here in America, by our President. Hate? No. Disagreement, disappointment and now distrust.

God bless the United States of America and the world.

Oh, dear. Where to start?

"Northuis says Bush "cherry picked" intelligence given to the Senate, which authorized war. The bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, along with the Robb-Silverman report, disagreed."

Bob, please explain the role of the White House Iraq Group and the Pentagon's Office of Special Plans. Be succinct.

"Northuis says Bush stated Saddam could send a nuke here in 45 minutes. Bush never said any such thing."

This is true. Bush said they could launch a chemical or biological attack in 45 minutes: A glaring oversight on part of the LTE author.

"Northuis quotes Joe Wilson's findings on his trip to Niger, which the Senate Intelligence Committee found to be distorted and untrue, inaccurate and unsubstantiated."

And this is why Bush retracted those infamous 16 words? Dispute Wilson all you want, but his conclusions hold water. (Check "Conclusion 13" from the Senate Intelligence's report. It says, "The report on the former ambassador's trip to Niger, disseminated in March 2002, did not change any analysts' assessments of the Iraq-Niger uranium deal." They agreed with him!) The good folks over at MediaMatters.org cover this a whole lot better than I have the time or inclination to do: http://mediamatters.org/items/200510210001

"Northuis says Bush has silenced the press here in the United States. What a statement! Northuis must never read newspapers, magazines or watch television news."

Case in point: The NY Times story about warrantless NSA wiretaps that it sat on for a year at the urging of Bush, who had a nice little Oval Office meeting with publisher Arthur Sulzberger and executive editor Bill Keller. Coincidence? Some more here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/25/AR2005122500665.html

I shouldn't need to point out that these two sets of statistics are not mutually exclusive. While I'm certainly glad that Iraqis have faith in their elections (well, the Shiite religious wackos do, anyway- everybody else seems rather miffed), but they want us out ASAP. Even the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Marine General Peter Pace admits as much. (http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=78921)
See an interesting Newsweek article for the details of this CPA-sponsored poll of Iraqis:

Bush needs to stop lobbing softballs to his critics.

Thanks, Demon and Den. Nice responses. I don't have anything to add for a change.

For those who hate the "liberal press" I see there are two pro Bush Letters. Hope that satisfies you.

Well, I for one hate our president. He is no better than Osama bin Forgotten in my book. Both are leaders that have given orders to kill innocent people. Both hate America and only wish to serve themselves.

I for one will celebrate when certain leaders in this world meet their makers. (bin Laden)

Brian,
I don't hate the guy, but I do feel like he's more prepared to run a jewelry kiosk at the mall than he is to be President of the United States. I'm sure he's an affable guy but I do question his judgement about things---for example, tearing down all the things his dad worked so hard to build up. Foreign policy, alliances, diplomacy over reactionary moves etc.

My other concern has been that he does not do "humility". Life experiences have shown me that very small people lack humility. Lincoln was one of the most humble persons ever elected President and history has shown he was one of if not THE greatest. My dad used to say, "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear" so maybe I am putting too much pressure on the fellow.

Good work Bob,

You drew all the usual cowardly little dumbocrat trolls to your letter like stink on donkey dung. They are sick puppies who need to be neutered or put to sleep. God Bless George Bush, America and our troops.
