Lincoln didn't invade "the southern states." He invaded the Confederate States of America, a foreign country.

sixstring, maybe you need to go over and read some of the comments on Dougs blog from early in the week concerning this subject. You might just learn something other than your misguided thoughts that all southernern people who would honor Lee and Jackson wear hoods.

I would also suggest that you read "Lee's Generals". You really might learn something because it is evident that where you went to school history was not taught.

Those who fought to preserve human slavery are not worthy of honor. One may perhaps respect their proficiency as military strategists. Honor is a term that implies moral worthiness.

Barbati, A modern application of your comment would be that those those who fight for civil rights and ignore contemporary human slavery are not worthy of honor.

Barbati, you forget that for over 4 score and 7, the US supported the institution of slavery. You also have failed to read history to see that slavery was only one of the reasons for the War between the States. Try tarriffs and taxes that were placed on the South from the early 1840's and you will see that there is much more than just slavery as an issue. Yes it seems that the north "made" slavery the main issue but is was only a part of it.
The generals of the south did not fight to preserve human slavery but the right of states, as stated under the Constitution to make the choice of what would be done. When the rights of the states began to deterioriate then the rights of all citizens followed. Read history and find out just how true this is.

We don't honor McClellan or Grant, why should we honor Lee or Jackson?

Nothing affirmed slavery as strongly as the War of Northern Aggression. Lincoln made it very clear that he was not invading the Confederate States of American in order to free any slaves. He stated that he was fighting to "save the union" and that he would do that if it meant not freeing a single slave, freeing all the slaves, or freeing some slaves but not others.

"Saving the Union," however, was a euphemism for "ruling the South without their consent." Membership in the union had been voluntary until Mr. Lincoln's War. After it was over and the C.S.A. conquered and forced to be a part of the United States, it was a union literally held together at gunpoint. That's slavery. If a people isn't free to determine who they will associate with and who their leaders will be, then they are slaves.

So while the myth is that Mr. Lincoln's war ended slavery, the truth is that private slavery was abolished and public slavery was vehemently affirmed. While it's a good thing that private slavery was abolished, we all suffered a much worse fate in that public slavery was instituted. 4 million people simply lost their private masters and became slaves to a new master--the federal government--and everyone else became slaves for the first time.

That's very much a huge net loss.

The war was mainly about Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party wanting to implement The American System, a socialist system of mercantilism which was all about federal public works, tariffs, and corporate protectionism in which the corporations who helped keep the Republicans in power would receive all kinds of subsidies and have all kinds of protective tariffs implemented for them. The system was egregiously unconstitutional and immoral, of course, and the Southern states had successfully prevented it since the time of Alexander Hamilton. His federalists morphed into the Whig Party, who morphed into the Republican Party, and they finally had their man when Lincoln was elected.

Guess some folks have never read a history book written prior to the 1960's. After the mid 60's most were written by revisionist. The same one's who burned their draft cards and/or ran off to Canada

It's ironic that you defend the Vietnam draft after apparently agreeing with my comments on Lincoln's war. The draft is a form of public slavery, which is what you seem to believe the Confederacy was correct to fight against. I would have burned my draft card too.

Didn't defend the draft , only compared those who wrote history books after that era as draft dodgers. There is a difference.

This is what I was agreeing with and this is what I have been stating. Tarriffs, taxes etc placed on the south,as they had been doing especially since the 1840's. I realize that there had been others prior to the 1840's but they became more agressive and more oppresive during that time and continued until the South would take no more.

Don't see many 50's either yellow unless you ask for them. I usually get 20's and one hundreds.
No one wants to take 50's at stores, especially gas stations. Don't say much for Grant and his 50 now does it.

I've read a few history books and i know that there is alot of grey area instead of being black and white. as far as honoring them....they have a place in text books. They dont need a national holiday or anything like that. and even then, how many would actually recognize those holidays. the problem with honoring anyone confederate is that the whole discussion usually turns into a racial arguement and some is labeled a racist. and thus these discussions become worse than the actual historical events.

Yellowdog, few, very few. I posted on Dougs site and told the story of how my family during that time was split, not over slavery, but over many other issues. One being saving the Union and the others feeling that the states are the ones who had the right to decide things and not the feds. We had brothers on the north and on the south. On my grandmother Jones side of the family it was the same. It was indeed a sad situation.

Oh and on the fifties, heck I never see one. My checks go direct deposit and I am doing well if I see a couple of ones and if lucky a twenty to carry me over til next month. hahaa.
