Whistle helps avert collisions with deer
Collisions with deer result in many fatalities each year. Hints to avoid collisions include driving slowly especially during dusk, dawn and in fog when deer are active. Watch for eyes that reflect in headlights and anticipate that the deer might run into you. Where there is one deer, there will usually be others. Using your horn can be effective in scaring deer off.
A deer whistle is a device you can place on the front of your vehicle, which has been shown in some research to prevent collisions with deer.
The device is activated by wind rushing through it as you drive. The whistling it produces is virtually undetectable to humans. I purchased a simple, inexpensive ($6) plastic whistle that has helped me avoid hitting deer on at least a dozen occasions.
While some research disputes the effectiveness of deer whistles, it seems logical that such a small investment is worth any potential protection for me and my family. I have given the device to friends who agree that it works. Patrol cars used by deputies in the county are equipped with them, as well. I wonder if Joanne Gray is somehow connected with the Deer Whistle manufacturer. She says the "plastic whistle... has helped me avoid hitting deer on at least a dozen occasions." Does this mean she saw deer run away from her car or that she was simply able to brake in time?
I have a 30 year old truck that MUST be producing every frequency of sound because of missing window seals and rust holes, yet the deer seem attracted to it. I have a more modern car, though. While driving it I've avoided deer, withour a deer whistle, and I think it's due to listening to NPR. This also seems to repel elephants and witches.

All of this could be avoided if the deer would use the deer crossings like they're supposed to.

Joanne, sounded like a good idea. When I went to the site, the price was $59.95. Where did you find one for $6.
Remember the Ron White routine where he talks about deer hunting. The gist is why hide and trees and be quiet, just turn your lights on bright and roar down the highway.

We've hit countless deer all the while having the aforementioned deer whistles in place on our vehicles. The incidence of vehicular deer homicide is so high in our family we enjoyed our 15 minutes of fame on national television for it. I have come to the conclusion that the whistles actually attract the deer.
Regardless, the number of fatalities caused by auto/deer collisions is enormous and on the rise. Biologists estimate deer populations now to exceed that of colonial times (what you get when you kill off all the predators?). The accidents aren't likely to decrease and while I appreciate the writer's recommendations, the whistles ($6 at Wal-Mart) are largely ineffective and many times the reflection of eyes in the headlights is too little too late (particularly since many deer are well off the road and outside of the light beam as a car approaches).
Too many deer, I say. Just this week, I dodged 3 sprinting out of a neighbor's yard at 5:45 pm and barely missing my car, and countless Bambis on the side of country roads as I navigated home from work. I shudder to think of the number of people whose lives will be taken or at the least adversely affected by auto collisions with deer. While their great numbers seem unsustainable in this current landscape, it seems we see more and more in our fields and front yards, on roadsides, and in urban areas. I hit one at 11 am on Guilford College Rd. within the city limits last April - it literally did a kamikaze out of the woods and into my driver's side window, totalling my car. Did I mention there was a deer whistle on it? It's time to cull the herds. That's the only thing that's going to have any effect on the number of deer/auto collision incidents.

True, JEC. Thanks for the info. Will not look for a deer whistle as we are blessed with many in our area.

I think we should re-introduce predators to the country side. A couple of wolfpacks, a few mountain lions, or even some of those cervils running around Greensboro would help thin out those pesky deer ;-P.

Old Professor,
I'll vote for that, just don't let the beer drinking, gun toting, crowd have at it! I'd rather be at risk of being mauled by a cougar than being shot, a mile away, by some high school dropout, who does not realize how far a bullet can travel and how much harm it can cause. The NRA would be better off spending all that money they spend lobbying congress, teaching their membership how to properly hunt.
Uh oh! I just committed a cardinal sin....attacking the NRA. I am probably going to be called "one of them lib-ruls".
