Five years later, Bush won't admit truth
In 2011, ex-President Bush emerges from private life to promote his memoir in an exclusive Barbara Walters interview. He's tanned, trim and eager to rebuff recent charges by former cabinet members and staffers. He says planting "seeds of democracy" in the Middle East was his greatest achievement.
When Walters cites the week's body count, he insists the "situation is still developing" but "one day people will thank the U.S." for invading Iraq. He predicts that bin Laden will soon be captured. His face darkens when Walters quotes an open letter written by the Swift Boat Veterans of Iraqi War who accuse him of having "lost Iraq."
He spends a third of the interview discussing his faith but falls short of criticizing extremists camped by his ranch who've demanded he explain why his administration failed to have Roe v. Wade overturned.
When Walters suggests that Bush's great-grandchildren will be paying for his administration's huge debts, he shrugs. He ignores her questions about his lobby group assisting oil companies doing business in repressive nations. He says he has "not had the chance" to visit New Orleans since the 2005 flood.
He jokes about his golf game.

I am positive the rules say " present facts" to have a letter posted in the LTE but I guess any liberal knows that facts just get in the way of their agenda. By the way Andy since you can see into the future how about this Friday's Mega- Millions lottery numbers or better yet Who's gonna win the NCAA Tournament this year? We need your psychic powers for more important issues.

Is this the same guy who wrote the "Iraqi Elephant" lte a few days ago? Seems with every passing day the liberals must stretch their imaginations to new limits in order to come up with a more creative way to bash Bush that will not bore the socks off the reader. This one time traveled into the future and employed Barbara Walters. lol lol
Kinda amusing to watch the left lose their grip and continue their downward plunge into oblivion. What's next? A visit to the old west to drum up Bush's great great grandfather and have him 'tsk, tsk, tsk, at what his descendant has become?

TOTALLY OFF THREAD - but I'm looking for a spot to dump this:
http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0314/p01s02-uspo.html
This caught my eye: The economic burden .. in 1980 .. was $1 trillion ... a figure stirred national anxiety ... "Today, the national debt totals $8.3 trillion, a level that could force Congress this week to raise the debt ceiling for the fourth time in George W. Bush's presidency."

Question, does Bush even play golf?????
Now that the Irag generals admitted that Saddam told them he had WMD.I wonder if we will keep hearing Bush lied about WMD? Since Allen Johnson was a big pusher of this I hope he chimes in.

That's it. I'll never vote for GW Bush again!

Neo and others,
Like William F. Buckley, it's time you admitted this President is incompetent, surrounded by incompetence.
His legacy: F A I L U R E
Posted on March 14, 2006 8:47 AM
NeoCON,
If you looked around your ranks, you would see it is your mindset that seems to be unhinged at the moment. The conservatives cannot put enough distance between themselves and this lame duck President.
Rove--under investigation for perjury and leaks.
Chief Domestic Policy aid to the President is charged with a shoplifting scam and they have it all on tape--both video and cash register tape!
Two words: D U M B & D U M B E R

Neo,
Maybe Secret Agent Produce will save the day!
Posted on March 14, 2006 9:12 AM
Really, neo, you're going with that strategy? We're stretching OUR imaginations and losing OUR grip? I am beginning to wonder if there is ever any issue on which you might think the president has made an error. But since your only retort seems to be that we are baseless bashers, it's hard to know if you have any original thought yourself.
If the metaphorical look into the future was too philosophical for you, how about something more down to earth? How can you possibly defend the illegal wire tapping, the unabashed spending, the war with no strategy, the undermining of education, the ignorance of our health care situation, the lies and the deception?
And if your response is that I'm just bashing everything he does, or that I'm reciting someone else's rhetoric, don't waste my time by responding. That seems to be your answer for everything, so I'll assume that's all you've got for me if I don't see a legitimate response.

There are a few more certainties in life, other than death and taxes.
One is that there will be a near daily LTE with this exact same premise, only a different way of phrasing it.
Another is that the commenters will post with the exact same premise, only different ways of phrasing it.
The third is that this board is full of kettles, but apparently no pots.

Question, does Bush even play golf?????
Probably not, unless there is a golf coarse on Air Force One.
Posted on March 14, 2006 10:29 AM
Did anyone catch the interview with Howard Coble in today's paper? Pretty interesting.
It sort of encourages me that he is standing up to the Bush machine even if it is just a bit. Ya know, with all these conservatives coming out against Bush and his policies, it seems to me the only folks that are still taking up for him are the people on the extreme right...I mean the ultra-extreme right.
Perhaps the tide is turning. We can only hope and pray.
Posted on March 14, 2006 11:02 AM
Progressive, you can hope and pray. For me, that is a forgone isue. My hope for change ended in November 2004. And be careful, depending upon where you live, there is a possibilty that you could be represented in Congress by Vernon Robinson. He is the "out of area" GOP candidate seeking to unseat Rep. Brad Miller.
And just for the record, Robinson does not live in/near the area of the people that he is seeking to represent! What does that say about GOP ethics? And yes, it was the NC Legislature that passed the law allowing this. Robinson is just the first candidate that I personnally know of who is exercising the principle of this law.
Things to poder (above).

Darryl,
Things (In THIS letter) to ponder:
Will Barbara Walters still look exactly the same in 5 years?
Why does Andrew think Roe V Wade won't be overturned in 5 years?
What makes Andrew think Bush would write a Memoir? The man can barely speak.
Does Andrew possibly have even less of a life than me?
Posted on March 14, 2006 11:42 AM
"And just for the record, Robinson does not live in/near the area of the people that he is seeking to represent! What does that say about GOP ethics? "
At it's closest point the Miller's 13th district takes in part of Guilford County less than 10 miles from Robinson's home of Forsyth county. The constituents in these areas share the same economic and social issues as anywere else in the Piedmont.
If you want to talk about the ethics of campaigning/serving for/in an office in an area that is not your home one needs to look no further than the current Jr. US Senator for NY state.
Posted on March 14, 2006 11:58 AM
Darryl, I do live in the 13th District as a matter of fact. I can tell you that our District is made up of progressive neighborhoods both in Greensboro (Westerwood, Lake Daniel, etc.) and in Raleigh. Vernon Robinson represents well the extreme right of the Republican party. Just ask Virginia Foxx how these folks can turn on mainstream Republicans. However, just like in the Foxx/Robinson runoff, people can see just how out of touch Vernon is with the majority of voters both Republican and Democrat. Speaking of which, I guess Claude Allen won't be running for anything anytime soon.
And Hugh, I know what you mean about Hillary. I assume that is who you are talking about. We have someone just like her here in NC...Elizabeth Dole. Of course, I would put them both in the same basket. And by the way, they are the best of friends from what I hear. Go figure. All Hillary's pandering to the right has put her in the place that nobody could take her candidacy for President seriously. That is, if indeed she runs for President.

Ah yes hugh, we must look at what them thar "d" yankees do rathern than what us good ole sotheners do don't we? As Progressiveian noted, we'uns got one of them ole carpet baggers here in tha south agin! What we gonna do bout it?
hugh, trying to redirect the proverbial spotlight off of one's own shortcomings to those of another only casts a much brighter light on the one who is redirecting. Apparently I hit a touchy spot with my note on Robinson. I did fail to mention the opponent to Howard Coble doing the same thing. For that, I conceed that point before it is lashed upon me.

Neocon, just when I thought we were progressing, you defend the Bush family again. You really can't mean what you say. Please tell me you are just defending the Bushes for the responses you get.
The Bush/oil/war regime is in total control right now. All we can do is stay aware of what is happening and pray for God to Heal the Land.

HowieG, in spite of being a product of the public education system ,at least for the first 12 yrs, the letter was not too "philosophical" for me to grasp. Just funny. Thanks for the insult anyway. I was beginning to worry that perhaps I had lost my touch when it comes to irritatibng liberals. To show my apprecation, I will address your questions.
"Illegal wiretapping". Nothing wrong with listening in on suspected terrorists phone conversations. The calls that were subject to this either came from or went to foreign sources. Go ahead and cite a few examples of 'quaker house' meetings being listened to, but the vast majority of the phone tappings were directed at foreign sources. This is not "domestic spying" as the lamestream liberal media has dubbed it.
"The unabashed spending"... I do have a problem with the 'unabashed spending'. I have no problem with the funding of the war on terror, but I do have a problem with socialist agenda that Bush has adopted (prescription drug benefits) in order to appease the democrats.
"The war with no strategy". The strategy is a free Iraq and an ally in a very troubled part of the world. YOU may not agree with the strategy, but that doesn't mean there isn't one.
"The undermining of education"... The federal government has absolutely no business in the education of our children. The "undermining" comes from government meddling. The private sector can better educate our kids and do it cheaper, imo. The best way to deal with this "undermining" is to abolish public schooling.
"The ignorance of our health care situation"... Same solution as the public education system- get government OUT of the healthcare business and eliminate the '3rd party payer' system. Abolish medicade, medicare, wic, welfare, food stamps, and stop funding failure.
"The lies and the deception"... Well, that's YOUR opinion.
Is this too 'unphilosopical' for you to understand? Is too far from the ivory tower for you to comprehend? Rules of posting here prohibit me from being more clear, but I could put into terms that would leave no doubt at all, given a free hand to do so.
Posted on March 14, 2006 2:25 PM
Neocon wrote: "Rules of posting here prohibit me from being more clear, but I could put into terms that would leave no doubt at all, given a free hand to do so."
Dude, this is straight from the Bush/Cheney handbook. If all else fails, say it's a secret or "I can't tell you." Shhhhh...someone's listening :-).
Posted on March 14, 2006 2:59 PM
"The Bush/oil/war regime"...
Carol, this is in no way a bash, right? It's just common knowledge that Bush started this war in order to enrich his "big oil" buddies, right? Only a right wing kook would fail to see this, right? Do you realize how that sounds? "Bush's war regime". Gimme a break.
My problems with Bush are many. But to travel into the future in order to paint a picture of him bumbling in front of Barbara Walters is comical and it also demonstrates just how desperate the left is in finding new ways to degrade him.
"Pray for God to heal the land". Where are the atheists when a liberal makes a comment about God? How come they are on a comment about God like wet on water when a conservative (sp?) makes a reference to Him? hmmm? Just something to ponder...
Posted on March 14, 2006 3:03 PM
Progressivexian, I was refering to being barred from this forum if I spoke in a more... ahem... "strong" language. I was not refering to "secrets". I have none.

Neocon, My name is Carol and I am a Bush Basher. I have had this problem since 2000. Are there 12 steps to help me recover? If so please list them.

Can't refute what I said about "The Bush/oil/war regime", huh Carol? Looks pathetic when you go back and re-read what you said, huh?
Posted on March 14, 2006 6:33 PM
neoCON what makes the thing look worse is when that one is continually berated and badgered. Doing that only reveals the shortcomings of the one doing the badgering.
Carol, no 12-Step program needed!

I'll join the Neo Parade!
The vast majority of the phone tappings - maybe all - were directed at foreign sources, but not "following the rules" (getting a required warrant) is either Hubris or Nixonian - maybe they're the same thing. Alternatively, perhaps it's an "Earth First" type strategy. Anyone else know about them? Get back to me.
Neo has a problem with the 'unabashed spending' - but to call it "to appease the democrats" is to expose silliness or worse. He's buying votes dude - get with the program and be proud of the strategy - or denounce it in earnest.
The war strategy - TODAY - is a free Iraq and an ally in a very troubled part of the world. I actually agree with the strategy, but Occupation is not the way, in my humble opinion. Time will tell.
Personally, I feel if we had gone in Imperial Rome style and simply declared it ours - very heavy handed and world opinion would be an issue - but at least that's a do-able strategy - we're half-assing it and it'll come back to haunt us for eternity. Time will tell.
Neo Talks big about getting the federal government out of the education of our children - but I doubt his credibility because this is the first I've heard of it from him, other than previous notes about Vouchers. btw - vouchers are totally Liberal Tax and Spend BS; so much for principals
Staying on that - I'm Traditional Republican - and that calls in part for Public Education as the great leveler of Society. If you don't like how an important institution is being run - and I think we all agree on that - then fix it.
While Neo is sincere about getting government OUT of the healthcare business etc., - the cost-benefit relationships of some government programs are favorable - we don't need to throw the baby out with the bath water. btw - funding failure is a Guarantee for the new Med Program.
Frankly - just this one Bush "deal" - the new Med Program - should be enough to throw the bum out. After all - how much dustruction is too much? How many bombs did McVey set off?
"The lies and the deception"... Well, that's everyones opinion, Neo - everyone but Neo.
Posted on March 14, 2006 8:37 PM
darRYL, who is continually being "berated and badgered"? I'd venture to say that that I was being "berated and badgered" by the left here.
"It's hard to know if you have any original thought here"..... "If the metaphorical look into the future was too philosopical for you"... HowieG.
And of course one of your favorites: "IF one can read to comprehension"...
But when it is pointed out that the "Bush/oil/war regime" statement is about what one would expect from a pouting child, who cut and pasted the line from moveon.org., all of a sudden your panties develope a knot in them and you feel the need to accuse me of "continually berating and badgering" someone just because it is one who parrots your posts that you feel is being badgered. You haven't the credibility to chastise me about "berating and badgering" someone, Mr./Ms. darRYL. Piss off...

"If you don't like how an instution is being run, then fix it". Ok, JDR, fix it. Tell Easley and Grier your ideas, I'm sure they will bow down to such a such a great blogger. Hell, they'll most likley offer you a position on the board. The public school system is broke and beyond repair. imo of course. "The great leveler of soceity"? Karl would be proud.
"Throw the baby out with the bathwater". Translation: I trust the government more than I do myself to educate my kids and want to spread the misery around.
"Neo has a problem with unabashed spending". Yes, I do. As I stated. The social spending was an attempt to appease the democrats. Bush hadn't the backbone to stand up to them.
Congrats, JDR, you made it through a whole post without citing the CSM or NPR as a source to back you up. I'm impressed.
Oh, and the "lies and deception". I already knew your opinion on that. That is what they preach on npr.
Posted on March 14, 2006 9:14 PM
Jeeze, Neo - I'm sorry you are so troubled that I use for my information sources recognized as being both thorough and neutral. I'll consider becoming less informed by parroting biased pundits.
??(thinkin')??(thinkin')?? ... naaa ... I'm not gonna do it.
As for your continued reference to Marx - I've never read his stuff.
Public Education. I agree, screwed up, and I was pretty active until recently - and certainly have made enemies though my out spokenness at local school board meetings. The principal at my kids school finds somewhere to duck into when I walk down the halls.
I'm a Traditional Republican ... From my current read, here's a relevant quote I like:
"... in an economy of rapid growth and a society of society of equal opportunity and free public education, a young man who practiced the virtues of hard work, self-discipline, self-improvement, thrift, and sobriety could pull himself up by his own bootstraps and become self-employed or a successful employer himself."
Our friend Dan could not have said it better and certainly would agree fully, as do I.
Your milage apparently varies.

Neocon, under the Bush admin, we started a war with a country that was NEVER a threat to the USA, Haliburton has made billions on the war, oil prices have skyrocketed and the oil companies have made record profits, Bush, Cheney, Rice all have worked for oil companies, the National debt is at an all time high.
Can you refute any of the above? Now I am not a military expert or an economist, just an ordinary citizen who looks at the "State of the Union". I see a Bush/war/oil regime. What do you see?

Neocon,
I don't know if you're still looking at this thread. I didn't see any responses yesterday afternoon and I've been busy ever since, but if you are checking in, let me address your response, lest you think I'm running from a debate.
First of all, you've mixed some of your own philosophies with the defense of the administration's policies. Abolition of public education is your opinion of a solution -- and one I imagine you share with very few -- but no defense of the administration's approach, which has been to demand certain changes to the system, then cut the funding required to make the changes.
Likewise, it may be your opinion that wire-tapping is perfectly justified, but it does violate the law, and that's the point that I had tried to make. The administration is now saying that the law is archaic because of technological advances. However, the proper approach would have been to change the laws -- they control every branch of government -- then work within the law.
As for spending to appease the left, is that supposed to be a joke? The prescription drug benefit you cite is widely viewed by the left (and many elderly) as a gigantic gift to the pharmaceutical companies.
The war strategy is to topple a dicatator and create an ally. Do you really think that's what is happening? Other than put Husseain out of work, what have we accomplished? As I understand it, civil war may have already begun, and we have almost no chance of having an ally in Iraq, no matter how long we stay there. Disclosure note: my source on this opinion is my own brain, not fed to me by moveon, Howard Dean, or Al Franken -- just in case you were going to trot out that old reliable retort.
Your solution to healthcare is again presenting your idea (abandonment) rather than addressing the administration's approach (ignorance).
And the lies and deception are documented pretty well, and as JDR stated, you seem to be one of the few stalwarts holding on to the belief that Bush hasn't lied to us. And I don't listen to NPR, or Janeane Garofolo, and I don't read Molly Ivins or the New York Times. So where could a simple product of the NC public education system possibly get these crazy ideas without them being fed into my brain? You seem to habitually doubt the left's ability for independent thought. Oh well, that's your issue.

In 2040, US veterans of the Iraqi war will return to places like Baghdad and Fallujah and meet with former Iraqi militiamen, fedayeen, Baathists, and others who fought them. Veterans from both sides will discover that they have much in common, especially their difficulties adjusting to civilian life and the impact of the war on their families. They will share photographs of their children and grandchildren. The meeting of limbless vets will be especially moving. There will still be much residual bitterness on both sides, but most will feel some degree of closure when an infamous insurgent openly admits to having beheaded innocent victims and apologizes. By his side will be an American officer who oversaw torture of Iraqi prisoners. He, too, will publicly apologize. They will say that while each prays to a different God, they will say that no one's God would approve of the immense suffering and harm they both committed.
If anything, the present administration has been accused of a lack of imagination, unable to use the great resources of our governmentto either imagine that planes could be used as weapons or that a category 5 storm would really overwhelm New Orleans' levees.
For the uncreative and unimaginative who cannot imagine the above happening, try reading a book sometime, or talk to some of old geysers in your neighborhood who fought in America's past wars.
And let's all hope Baba Wawa is still her same, glamorouse self in 2011!

Condi: Hu is the guy in China
George: Will you stay out of China?!
