School board chooses another misdirection

The decision by the Board of Education to name our new middle school Northern Guilford Middle School is out for public comment. The board rejected the name Edward R. Murrow Middle School by a 6-5 vote. After they confirm their decision in 30 days, Guilford County will have the 16th directionally named school.

No school district in the United States has anywhere close to this number. Once again, the school board had a chance to embrace excellence but chose more of the same. We cannot improve the school system if we continue to do the same things we are doing now.

By choosing "directional" names for the schools, the Guilford County School Board masks an underlying problem. By choosing directional names, this SB is trying to ascertain which way it is going. Yet again, they lack the vision to know that without making error, after error, after error, after error....this SB is like the Energizer Bunny....it just keeps on going & going & going....get the picture?

I don't think that naming schools after individuals is the answer to any of our educational problems. Unless of course if a foundation established after that person wants to donate money or land for the school to use as a resource.

Joe,
My hat is off to you. This is not one of your better lte's but you are stick chugging along. You are at EVERY board meeting, and you do not even have children in the schools. You speak at just about EVERY school board meeting.

Start choosing your battles and making more progress. A school can be renamed by a later board, so go for some meat next time!

Joe, how about some help in stopping the busing of High Point kids for diversity. That would really help us all. Thanks for being active in GCS.

Please read today's article about Grier's new plan for poor schools. Includes bonus to teach in poor schools. Would cut teaching supplements to fund the new plan called "Mission Possible"
