An incentive package for immigrants, employers

I have a modest proposal to better address the immigration issue. It's based on the millennia-old proven policy of supply and demand. We all agree that, as defect-laden as it is, citizenship in the United States is as good as it gets for people. So why not offer it for what it's worth?

Let prospective citizens come in merely by registering at the border, have their photos and fingerprints taken, and let them enter the country freely. (For the NPR-ista, please note every U.S. citizen who has his photo in a high school annual, or was born in a U.S. hospital, has that same "privilege.")

Now the fun part: All noncitizens have an extra 1 percent in tax collected on their withholding taxes and other tax rates. It's an incentive to become citizens and a way to pay for the costs they impose on the country. Any employer who employs a nonregistered worker pays a $10,000 per-occurrence fine.

No goofy, wildly expensive and useless fences, no dying border-crossers in the desert, and no unpaid expenses for residents.
Cheers.

PROs:

The fence is the dumbist idea since I can remenber.
The fine for hiring illegals is already law, and a good one at that - just enforce it

CONs:

What's to keep those entering with this new ID of switching to a fake one - as many do now to "document" themselves for work. There goes the gain.

NPR

In defense NPR - and not being sympathetic to those dying in an illegal desert crossing: With out NPR, the American people might only hear this news from the talking heads:

"Clear Channel, in cooperation and Federal Agencies including DHS and the NMM (New Minute Men), reported again today (as yesterday and the past xxx days), that 1179 Terrorists were shot dead as they tried to cross the southern border. WMD's were reported to be clutched in the hands of the corpses, with mouths clearly forming the words "Praise be to Allah" as they met their fate.

"Spokesman Vernon Robertson said 'We continue to keep America secure from these radicals, and our success proves that supply side policy works'."

Sounds like a wonderful idea, all you have to do is enforce it.

Oops! Did I say "enforce it"? Because if existing law was enforced, we wouldn't be in this pickle. Silly me.

"NPR-ista"

You so funny.

Don't get NPR-ista...sure it is a play on words. Please explain.

Denzien [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

NPR-ista, i would assume, is a woefully poor attempt to poke fun at liberals (or, in this case, anyone with namby-pamby privacy concerns), much in the same vein as "fashionistas".

What's funny is that base name calling like this is taken as valid political debate. It sure does help.

It's amazing what gets put in the LTE's. Must not have much to choose from.

Since I listen to NPR, does that make me an NPR-ista???? Is that bad? Need to know if I should be offended.

Denzien [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Indeed, Carol- it's amazing the way that discourse has really gone downhill. I blame the talking heads on thinly veiled propaganda shows on cable networks and talk radio for affecting the decline, but that's just me.

And I guess I'm a NPR-ista, too. My wife accuses me of cheating on her with Robin Young on "Here and Now".

hee hee.

Count me as an NPR-ista as well.

I'll take NPR over Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly, et al, any day of the week!

Denzien,YD, Carol, and others:
Have you noticed that even though the hard core Bush supporters make up only 28% of the country's voters, they are one heck of a noisy bunch! I never considered myself a shill for any politician, or leader, but I still do not get the zeal to underpin this President while he makes one incompetent move after another. The Doris Kearns Goodwin book on Lincoln is sooo good because it points out that Lincoln surrounded himself by contrary opinions. Heck! Most of his cabinet were running against him while he was in office. Reminds me of a person who would not go see Da Vinci Code because it was a threat to her faith. My feeling is that if her faith is that weak, then she's in bigger trouble than seeing Da Vinci! Bush won't even listen to opposing views.
