Girl Scout Cookies not comparable to al-Qaida

We were dismayed with the editorial column (May 23) by Nicholas D. Kristof of The New York Times in which he compares the selling of Girl Scout cookies to deaths at the hands of al-Qaida.

Clearly, Kristof knows better; he contacted our national office, who told him we are very concerned about trans fats and are working diligently with our bakers to eliminate them. Also, his numbers were wrong. In the Triad, five of eight cookie types have zero trans fats.
By 2007, all Girl Scout cookies will have zero trans fat. (To clarify the labeling, FDA regulations stipulate that a serving with less than 0.5 grams be declared as zero.)

As we eliminate trans fats, we ask for continued support of the Girl Scout cookie program, which not only funds essential services for 16,000 Triad Girl Scouts but also provides girls with hands-on experience in skills they will use throughout their lives. These include teamwork, goal-setting, money management, oral presentation skills and customer service.

Tarheel Triad Council, a 13-county area, sells cookies each winter. For more information, go to our Web site at www.tarheeltriad.org, call us at (336) 274-8491, or send an e-mail to misc@tarheeltriad.org.

Man, I missed that editorial -- al-Qaida and Girl Scouts?

Clear Channel and Vernon are SO ahead of me.

Leave it to someone from the NYT to make such a comparison, doesn't surprise me. I'm used to people like Kristof calling Bush a terrorist, liar, etc. but the Girl Scouts? Well it makes sense after all, the Girl Scouts are terrorists and the Boy Scouts are right wing Bible thumping homophobes who want to kill gays & atheists for that matter.

These people are truly demented. They are the people who Deacon considers mainstream as they don't approve of Bush in polls.

Ms. Burnette, if I were in your national office I would have told Kristof kindly to f**k off and run some ads in papers exposing this kook for what he is, a kook.

And newspapers wonder why their circulation is decreasing. Sigh.

Carol Dunn [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Since I don't read Kristof, I can't comment on his writings. However, Dan, it seems he is just one of the many kooks who get published and aired. I think they write and say what they do just to get folks riled up, they can't believe all they say. That goes for Rush and Bill as well. They are all laughing all the way to the bank.

BTW, who do you trust for news?

JEC [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Yes, where to get legit news...

You have to read it all...and I mean all of it. Suffer through it if you must, but read it all from Rush to Friedman to Will to Sowell. REmember that perception is reality and we all bring baggage to the table when assembling our own opinions. The truth must be extrapolated from the mire we call the media.

phillipa [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

JEC's right, you got to read it all. I read the N&R, but I also read the Rhino. I check out CNN and MSNBC but I also read foxnews online. I only listen to NPR, however, because I hate trying to tune stations in on my car radio and drive at the same time. My husband says that's a good thing!

James D. Rockefeller [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

I pretty much agree, JEC, but do find a difference in how the Hard Right portrays things vs. how the Softy Left does.

On a Given Issue, the Hard Right tends to leave out unsupporting details - listening to Rush I find myself screaming at the radio - "Wait, what about ___ ".

Consider Global Warming. For decades the Righties have been poo-pooing it - I say because the majority of Vocal Righties are REALLY just the mouth pieces for Big Business and Big Business doesn't want to foot the bill.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world heard the clarion call and invested in "green" technologies and are a near generation in front of us. The sad part is they now have the tech' advantage in this field and long term American business' have missed the opportunity.

SVEND AUKEN: " .. more than 50 percent of the world wind energy turbines are made on Danish technology and it's given thousands of new jobs and billions of dollars in export income ..."

JOSEPH ROMM: "My concern is that by failing to take strong action what is going to happen by the time we get around to taking action, which we obviously are, we're going to be buying wind turbines from the Europeans and the Japanese and losing the jobs that we would create otherwise if we were the leader, which really we ought to be."

The same "lack of getting on the bandwagon" claim can be said for Stem Cell Research.

On a Given Issue, the Softy Right tends to acknowledge all the details, but uses the "humitarian" argument as a sort of trump card. Welfare might be a good example, where they worry endlessly about the single-moms and "solve" it though food stamps. Looking at the underbelly of society during aftermath of Katina we saw what a couple trillion dollars of welfare wrought ... and it weren't no pretty sight.

James D. Rockefeller [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

... now here's the thing: big business doesn't care about america. They are global, and after other countries develope the technology, they'll just buy it - which is fine for them but the decent middle class jobs remain overseas - which is fine for them because they can still live in Manhattan or anywhere else they want, and serf labor get's cheaper all the time!

It's good to know that only republicans accept contributions from big businesses, listen to big businesses, and were born with silver spoons in their mouths.

Thank God that we have the democrats to counter-balance them. After all, all democrats were born destitute, worked their way up to poverty, and their only interest is being servants of the American people.

James D. Rockefeller [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

You're not listening, Yellow dog. WAIT - It's Noon ... Rush is on the radio!!!

JEC [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Ah the image of Teddy Kennedy as a baby with some plastic Dixie-ware!!

yellowdog [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

JDR,

I've only watched Rush one time while visiting with a family member. This was about 8 years ago and I remember vividly the video he showed of Clinton laughing immediately following a funeral for Ron Brown. I thought that it was distasteful to air that clip and thought the clip itself was pointless.

I myself have laughed during times of emotional grief. Sometimes it is very healing to do so and sometimes it is a matter of trying to recall the joy that the deceased person brought into our lives.

Anyway, after that experience, I wrote Rush off as an entertainer but with not much credibility.

Ain't it crazy how a LTE on Girl Scout cookies can evolve into this outlandish argument over Rush and big business and all the other bs that we put up with on all the other LTE's. I thought it was about Girl Scout cookes and the idiot who didn't like them because of the trans fats and then turned real stupid and compared them to alQuida.

Who cares what some nut from the NYT says. As long as the Girl Scouts have got the Peanut Butter cookies and the Chocolate Mint I don't care what kind of fat they got in them. Bring em on. I buy a case of each every year and dare anyone to touch even one of them. You liable to get a broken arm if you go for my Peanut Butter Girl Scout Cookies or my choco mint.

Bet the nut only gets his salsa in NY City as well. Hahahhahah. Heck I make mine and it will cure ulcers, kill fungus on maters, keep bugs off your beans and cure hot flashes. Now that's my kind of salsa. I don't eat it on my Peanut Butter Girl Scout cookies however. The cookies are too special!!!!!!

Dan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

MrP, I was wondering too how the subject of rampant Girl Scout terrorism in the USA morphed into Rush & Big Business. I have 3 boxes of mint cookies in my freezer (like 'em better frozen) but I guess I will have to toss them lest I contribute to massive death of my beloved country.

James D. Rockefeller [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Sorry, MRP and Dan - I have a one-track mind that takes unusual loops, but I don't think this particular loop was totally off thread.

The LTE was about wacky media commentary. JEC said to get "legit news ... You have to read it all ... "

I followed his lead about Rush, because it illustrates what I feel is a very valid discussion of how lefties and righties treat similar issues. imho that's important to understand - it explains a lot.

I provided a couple examples that looped back into why, in the opinion of others, at least one of these issues is foolishly abused by faux' calling themselves Conservative Americans. I backed that opinion with a nearly centrist and highly respected news link.

I am a broken record. I'm opinionated. I try to follow centrist and respected news sources. Sometimes I make a good point, occassionally I jump to conclusions. Sometimes these jumps are correct. Often the final story will not be know for a while.

Sometimes these jumps are proven wrong, but I am fairly quick to come back here and admit it. Frankly I rarely see that in here, so maybe I'm special, maybe I'm an ass, but maybe my ego isn't as puffed out as you think.

You really want foolish idle chatter-blather?

Dan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

JDR, you are what you are my friend. No matter what the subject you will get into the evils of big business. You just can't help yourself.

What you should have done is get stats about how "Big Cookie" is exploiting the Girl Scouts by making them peddle these foods of death and destruction all in the name of outlandish profits sent to off shore tax shelters, therby screwing the middle class. That would have tied in really well :)

mrproduce [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Dan , you pretty much summed up the situation well. Hey, before you pitch those chocolate mint cookies send them to an "official disposal site" here in the mountains. I will see that they are properly disposed of for you with absolutely no risk to you and at no cost.

Yes JDR idle chatter-blather as you put it is actually good for the soul and body. It allows us to laugh and be free from the heaviness of things in the world. It allows us to see the stupid things as the NYT letter for what it is and laugh at it. It is just something stupid because the individual had nothing better to write about that day and is so consumed with anger, hate and bitterness or perhaps a touch of egotistical elitism that even something as simple as Girl Scout cookies ignites a grain of stupidity within them and it must be gotten out.

The idle chatter-blather allows us to laugh at these things JDR and ourselves occasionally which is good for over all health. It clears the brain of noxious gasses and allows a fresh supple of 02 to be circulated and that allows us to think more clearly. It makes the body healthier by strengthening the abdominal muscles, the lungs and the vocal cords. It allows us to get past the seemingly all important 15 sec sound bites that fill our brains with clutter by filtering out these things, allowing us to laugh at 99% of them and file the other 1% for a time when seriousness is the order of the moment. Laughter from idle chatter-blather is healing to the body as well. It decreases pain and allows the body to heal thus making us happier individuals. It is mentally healthy as well. People who laugh and are happy are a lot are less likely to commit crimes. They make better mates, better parents and better neighbors. Mental illness is less in those who laugh freely and fully. Happy , laughing people are less likely to commit suicide , become addicted to drugs and alcohol. It allows us to laugh at ourselves occasionally JDR which allows us to look at ourselves and not take ourselves too seriously and that is certainly healthy. Those who partake in the "evils" of idle chatter-blather allow themselves the opportunity to see the things that are important and discard those of non-importance. They can see the things considered major suddenly become minor and the minor things suddenly become the nothingness that they actually were and that is a good thing.
So give it a try JDR. You just might enjoy the freedom you discover you actually have.
