Quality of life not up to snuff? Pay your own way

The June 20 "Scoop" article is proof of discrimination in a "means" other than skin color. Carolyn Coleman's remark came across to me as saying Billy Yow was below her because he digs wells for a living, and maybe dips a little snuff.

I don't know or care about the snuff, but thank God for well diggers. Without them, I would have no water at my house. And, what he does to relax is his business — snuff dipping does not cost us any taxes.

Personally, looking at art is no better than watching "still" TV. If Coleman feels that art museums improve her quality of life, then let her pay an admission charge and go for it. Don't expect taxpayers to have to cut our quality of life to improve others in this manner.

Art museums are not a necessity. Would she rather see a homeowner pay additional taxes for "art" and become a street person because he can't afford higher property taxes? Individuals should try to improve their own quality of life, not at someone else's expense.

And now, because I'm lucky enough to have a well, I must go do my laundry and improve the quality of my clothing.

Two letters in a row containing common sense. What are the n-r editors thinking?

Agree with neocon. That rarely happens. He must be moving to the left:)

Any time someone tries to make someone else look bad so that they look good, there's a problem.

Obviously she is blind, or simply never seen the good stuff. Van Gogh's "Potato Eaters" moved me to the core, as did Michanangio's half-finished scuptures "Awakening Slave" and "Atlas", as well as Goya's "Saturn Devouring One Of His Sons".
One can go one forever, but ya gotta see 'em in the flesh.

Should art museums charge sufficient admission to cover the costs? I'm probably "ok" with that, except that could exclude lotsa non wealthy folks, and that would be a shame.

Put me in charge of a fair progressive tax system that truely raises all boats, and I'll promise self suffecient art enterprises.

Billy is my rep. I think we need him to offset Skip. I find many of his comments to be wise and brave. Don't agree with all he says. So...what's new. I find that those who tout their education or income as making them better than others to be very shallow and do not want to be around them.

I enjoy going to art museums. Actually have a good laugh at what some call art. The canvas in DC of a painting of a piece of plywood defies my sense of what is art. Love Monet. However, if I had to choose, I would want water over art. Hopefully, we won't have to choose.

Carol,
Billy is a lot smarter than most folks give him credit for, but he is NOT the kind of person I want seen as "Representative" of Greensboro. With that said, neither is Carolyn Coleman or Skip Alston, and Bruce Davis. The aforementioned ones give us all a bad reputation. I would love to see District Five give us something better than they have in the past---Robert Moores, Phyllis Gibbs, Billy Yow etc. Just like Skip, Yow depends upon the fears and prejudices of people to get elected. Coleman, from time to time, will stand up to Skip, and I give her credit here for that. Parks, a Democrat, is so attached to Skip that he is worthless as a County wide Representative. If you haven't noticed, Mr. Parks is not the brightest bulb in the box either.

CAROL DUNN FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER,
IN DISTRICT 5 !!

I know I've said I did not want to see you have to associate with the dregs of the BOE, but I really think you could do us all a public service by running for the District Five seat! You could be the Anite Sharpe of the County Commissioners---the sharpest knife in the drawer. Carol, with your intellect, you could shine and also put a better light on District Five.

Then again, I'd hate to see you seated up there with the Skip, Parks, et al.

NEVER MIND.

Yow is the only one with balls enough to call Skip on his bull. The others cower under the PC pressure and let Skip intimidate him with his deck of 5000 race cards.

I say do away with at-large commissioners and require all commissioners to live in their district.

I agree with the LTE that Billy Yow's occupation is worthwhile and necessary. Further, his habit is being used to illustrate a negative trait and cast him in a bad light unfairly. That said, I find almost nothing he has brought to the council to be of real value, except maybe as a Laurel to Alston's Hardy. Not much from the pair other than comedy IMO.

I do feel compelled to take issue with the comment: "Personally, looking at art is no better than watching "still" TV". I agree with Rockefeller that she must not have seen the good stuff. I think that the value of museums in our society is that otherwise inaccessible treasures become available to regular folks. If school children had to pay $10 a pop to see works of art, would they ever see them at all? That would be a great injustice. State/local government sponsorship of art, in the ridiculously small amount that there is, will hardly alter the life of one single taxpayer, much less "become a street person because he can't afford higher property taxes". However, the absence of art would definitely alter the lives of many.

Just my opinion, and I hope I'm not alone.

Howie, if our tax dollars were spent wisely, there would be enough to take care of all the needy citizens, fund the arts, provide quality education, and all the things that make life such a joy. Greed has caused choices to be made. I don't like the choices our leaders are making.

Thanks for the nomination, DD. If nominated, I will not run. If elected, I will not serve...I am enjoying retirement too much.

DD, do me a favor. Please don't make any negative comments about our friend for one week. See how that flies.

Howie G [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Carol,

Couldn't agree more. If the tax dollars were spent wisely, there would be enough to go around. But if all the things you list were appropriately funded, what would we all have to write about?

Besides, one person's "wisely" is another person's "frivolously". Didn't a regular contributor to this forum state recently that the government should not be responsible for educating our children?

As for n____n, I will not engage him/her
anymore---at all!

Loved your line in another thread about "As long as there are tests, there will always be prayer in school".

Carol Dunn [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Howie, do you mean the one who thinks education should be a private business? Forgot his name but that is what he thinks. Really don't follow his logic at all.

DD, glad you are going to be a nice guy/professor/debate coach/whatever.

So the w---d t------r, (note how juvenile this looks - this is what I was talking about when I said my 4 yr. old was more mature at that age) aka the "citadel kid" won't come out and play anymore? You're breaking my heart!!

Good riddance lil' one note parrot!! lol Now I get to laugh at his/her idiotic posts without having to reply to him/her. (LMAO!!)

Carol,
Seems the Oak Ridge Runner has once again struck out on my identity. I am not the debate coach at Wake, and I am not Dave Hoggard. Don't know why it matters so to Mr.ORR, but hey, it's fun all the same.
Had a tour of the Elon School of Law building today and it is beautiful! Don't know how they are going to keep the vagrants out in the winter time---I imagine some will try to venture in, thinking they've opened the library back up!
