State's motto: 'Me First'
"Raising Scholars at Home" was what the bumper sticker read as either a tyke or adult proceeded to toss countless pieces of yellow paper out of the moving vehicle.
More and more I find that an attitude of "I've got mine — who cares about you?" exists in this region. Money for public schools? Can't do it; I'll home school or send my kids to private school so they get theirs. Yours? That's your problem.
Litter a problem? Nope, my yard is OK, so throw that junk out the window and let someone else worry about it. Just drive faster so you don't have to see it. And by all means, mow over the trash rather than picking it up first.
Factories making so much noise that residents nearby cannot get enough rest to go to programs for the disabled; get enough sleep even though the doctor ordered it, or even use their deck? Not my problem; disclosure laws only apply to resales, not new sales. Besides, my land deals are more important than your quality of life.
Welcome to the state whose license plates say "First in Flight" but should say "Me First."

Agreed, Kenneth. Just last night I was remarking to a friend how people think their wants and needs supercede your's. I was standing in line at a salad bar patiently waiting my turn when a woman stepped in front of me and broke in line like an impatient child. Her excuse for her unacceptable behavior was "I just want to get a couple of things". This is typical of the general public, imo.
They pull out in front of you, travel less than a block, and turn. More often than not, there is no one behind you. But they can't wait for you to pass first.
One can be waiting for service at any counter and invaribly someone will jump in front because they "don't have time to wait" their turn. I have begun to speak up and call them on their rude behavior. 9 times out of 10 they lie and mumble something about "I didn't realize you were waiting". Yea, right.
Same goes for inconsiderate slobs (women) who stand to pee. They spray the seat and leave it for someone else to clean up. (As a woman, this ticks me to the max.) And IF they wash their hands, they may or may not hit the trash can with their towels. After all, that's what the employees get paid for, to clean up the floor.
Almost on a daily basis I see people throwing things out their windows. If I don't see it directly, I see the results along the road frontage of my property. Everything except human carcasses!
It is the signs of the times, little love or consideration for others. These small things I have mentioned morphs into bigger things, ie, fighting and killing. Showing no regard for others is just the baby steps toward total disregard for mother earth and mankind.

To Yvonne:
I agree with you 100%. "It's all about me" is seems to be the norm everywhere, but this makes it even more fun to show common courtesy to others and watch their surprise! I'm sure you've seen it too.
To Mr. Trager:
It makes me angry that you seem to think this type behaviour is only in North Carolina. If you're so disgusted, I suggest you move. I'll even come help you pack! You'll soon find that this attitude is not just here but EVERYWHERE!

Good posts, Bunny and Yvonne. The wet seat is one of my biggest peeves. If you choose to stand, why can't you just lift the seat. ????

"(women) who stand to pee."
TMI! :-O

The torrential downpours have washed most of them down the drains, but the next time you are at a busy intersection stoplight, take a look at all the cigarette butts in the gutter. Talk about the most insensitive litterers! The next time you are behind a car whose passengers or driver is smoking, just watch them flick the butt out the window.
FACT: Average smokers have less than average education and income.
This must explain why they cannot use the ashtrays in their cars---they are idiots!
Que for smokers to begin attacking.

DD - Not going to attack. Just want to say that my spouse holds an MBA and still throws butts out the car window. Infuriates me to no end!!!

bunny,
the lte is making comments concerning where he lives (i.e. N.CAROLINA). maybe he is not as qualified as you are to make comments about other states.
i commented once here about trash on the roads and someone (you?) said i 'was hating' n.carolinans and should move back where i came from. i don't understand how the lte valid points cause you to have such a reaction as to offer to help him move....geez...lighten up !
i saw an interesting sign at a church the other day " if going in to church makes you a Christian - does going in to a garage make you a car ?"

Yvonne, you hit the nail right on the head! I hate the women who are afraid to sit down because of the germs in a public restroom but don't mind leaving theirs behind so generously! (Sorry hugh it it's TMI) It's ignoring the little things that gets you to thinking it's okay to ignore the big things, too.
So here's a challenge to all the Usual Suspects who post here and anyone else who reads this: Go out today and do something considerate for someone else. Not because you never do, but because that's the only way to make this world a better place. Minding your manners is important, and I'm sure all of the US's here do, but push the envelope and go out of your way to be considerate. When I used to complain to my dad that someone was rude, he always told me that what I needed to do is kill 'em with kindness. Dad's not around anymore, but still I try. You try, too.

READ the last sentence of the LTE. He was DIRECTLY attacking North Carolina. Sorry, but this state is no worse than the many states I have personally visited!

Pee on the toilet seats INDEED! Yvonne had me rolling with her observations. I think we could right a book on the many ways that people can be jerks.
I remember the first time I was assigned the task of cleaning the Ladies' room where I worked. I was unprepared. I always assumed that the ladies' room smelled like roses, always remained spotless and would be a breeze to clean. Imagine my surprise! Pee (and worse) on the seats, paper products including used tampons on the floors and walls, water all over the sinks. And I thought the men's bathroom was bad. The only noticeable improvement was that there didn't seem to be as many dirty limericks on the walls.
Thanks Yvonne. I needed a laugh.
As far as the cigarette butts out the window...just today I plowed my car into a mountain of them on Battleground. I was stuck for almost an hour until a tow truck came and rescued me. ;).

it's funny how often we look between the linse and just try to find a reason to lambast someone else.
"I agree with you 100%. "It's all about me", so bunny you are agreeing with the lte but you found it necessary to criticize him somehow. i like carols approach much better, she always seems to find the bright spot in others comments (i commend you carol)and we all ( me included ) can learn from her.
i guess i could say "i love N.Carolins" and you could reply with " so if you hate the other states so much, just stay away ". someone always will find a way to be critical imo.

Aren't you guilty of the very thing you say I am doing? Bottom line is, the LTE writer is apparently under the (false) assumption that North Carolina is the only place this "all about me" attitude is found. THAT was my point.

bunny,
you are right and i am wrong ! sorry to have bothered you.

"mow over the trash rather than picking it up first."
Interesting.

first in flight & me first used together as a literary device of sorts...more to make a point than to specifically attack the citizens of NC (as opposed to wherever the lte writer might be/have been living whilst composing his letter)
And he's right, btw. The sense of "I deserve..." and entitlement and "me first" that is pervasive in our society today just stinks.
Yvonne, you had me nodding my head in complete agreement over the toilet seat trauma in the ladies room (and I guess we should use the term lady loosely, huh?). It's pretty bad when you're better off using the men's loo at the Wilco Hess truck stop than the ladies room at Target. I've never been in a Target with clean restrooms. blech. Makes me shudder to think what sort of houses some of these slobs keep! ick, ick, double ick!!
Posted on July 6, 2006 9:28 PM
Put the seat up?? Yeah, right. Women don't know how to do that. Present company of ladies wxcluded, of course!
