Article confirms where Dole's real priorities are
I hope everyone else was as thrilled as I was to find out that Sen. Elizabeth Dole has been spending her time raising money for the Republicans ("Is Elizabeth Dole's show almost over?"A1, July 23).
That cleared up a lot of things for me.
I didn't understand why North Carolinians elected her, but now everything is crystal clear.
Since Dole did not live in North Carolina, I thought we could do a lot better finding someone who lived among us to represent us. I stand corrected.
We were not electing someone to represent the good people of North Carolina, but we were electing someone who had been an "unstoppable star for 25 years" and who could head the Republican fundraisers.

Hello Betty. Welcome to the contemporary American Political System.
For every dollar you contribute, you get one vote.
For every dollar you control, you get an extra 1/2 vote.

The one with the most dollars, wins! ....
WAIT, WAIT - that was a typo. I meant the one with the most VOTES ! wins (how Freudian of me).

So, the lte writer seems to think that Senator Dole is, rather than serving the citizens of the State from which she was elected, more interested in serving herself and the political party to which she belongs.
I concur, but as an avowed Independent I don't think that we can conclude from this fact that it is an entirely Republican issue.
The name "John Edwards" comes to mind. Our ersatz first term representative who maintained one of the worst attendance records in the Senate, both before and after announcing his national candidacy, and in fact "no showed" altogether on several votes of importance to North Carolinians.
From day one he placed the representation of himself and his personal aspirations above the interests of the citizens who elected him.
Does that excuse or mitigate Dole's actions?
Certainly not, I hold them both in equal contempt.
It may be a worn out cliche, but only we can force accountability from our elected officials.
It is our challenge to make it happen.

"I didn't understand why North Carolinians elected her"...
I do. North Carolinians prefered her to the Clinton minion, Erskine Bowles. It wasn't voter fraud or hanging chads, or closing the polling places early in democratic neighborhoods. They prefered to have Liddy Dole in the Senate.
It really is as simple as that.

... too bad there's not a legit' third choice, but the two parties keep it two party, and fools like __(insert_your_name_here)__ let the two parties lead you by the nose towards a "She's better than ___ " decision.

Are you sure that's "Liddy" Dole neocon? I had grandmother named Elizabeth whose nickname was "Libby" as in short for Elizabeth. I'm sure I've heard Mrs. Dole called Libby many times.

Ouch.

On the same note as janherman, I can thiink of another elected official who followed the exact same path as Edwards. Entire public service goes like this: Served four years as governor of Texas -- by some descriptions a part-time job -- and used the last two years to start building a national presence. Then spent entire second term running for Prez. When he ascended to the presidency, he had served exactly the same amount of time as John Edwards (6 years), and I'd venture he was no more effective as a public servant to that point. Anyone know who I'm talking about? So there's contempt to spare when it comes to this issue.

Has Giddy actually stopped shopping and getting her hair and nails done to actually visit the state of NC? She's more scarce than honest politicians.

Thanks for that link neocon. I found some others to support wikipedia. Here's one you folks might find interesting. Ouch, indeed.

Fundraising is essential to modern politics because politicians need to persuade stupid and ignorant people to vote for them. Complaints that there's too much money in politics, too much power in the hands of donors, etc. boil down to complaints about the sheeplike, easily persuaded nature of the electorate.

Good post. Funny, I don't remember seeing Betty Almond's LTE when John Edwards was our senator, do you?

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
Dole is as useless as teats on a man!
I'm no Hillary fan, but at least the Clintons actually "live" or "reside" in New York.
Dole claims North Carolina, but she is rarely seen. What a joke.
Not since Senator John East, or "Helms on Wheels" as he was known, has North Carolina had such pitiful representation in the United States Senate.
John East knew he stunk as a Senator and fell on his sword---well, not really, he sat with his car running in the garage, but same outcome.
WWEDD??
(What Would/will Elizabeth Dole Do?)

Might I remind you that Hillary moved to NY ONLY after deciding to run for the Senate.

Bunny,
At least Hillary moved to New York and bought a residence in New York, and pays property taxes in New York, and votes in New York! I prefaced my comments with the fact I am not a huge Hillary fan, but your comments make me want to be one!
Dole claims her mother's house as her address!
So Bunny, your feeble point just made my point. Dole is an opportunist of the worst kind. (like Vernon Robinson, as he doesn't even live where he's running) Too bad your defense of Dole was just another nail in her coffin.
Where is Elizabeth Dole's house?
It is in the Watergate next door to the Kennedy Center and across from the Saudi Arabian Embassy. I stay at the Watergate Hotel when in D.C. and have seen she and her hubby in the Chinese restaurant located in the complex.
If she has another face lift, she'll have a goatee!
Posted on August 3, 2006 12:28 PM
Sorry for the snide comment about Mrs. Dole's facelifts. Lord, please forgive me.
Bunny,
I apologize to you too, for my tone, as I just received a letter in response to the Gay Marriage debate and it said essentially that Dole supported it no matter what North Carolinians thought. She is a worthless piece of flesh.

Your "apology" is about as insincere and worthless as it gets.

Bunny,
It was a tongue in cheek apology.
Guess you didn't like the "goatee" comment on Dole.
