New Garden Friends united against torture
As a member of New Garden Friends Meeting, I wanted to respond to Arthur S. Lyon (letter, Sept. 24) regarding Quakers holding a variety of positions on issues.
He is correct that we do not always agree; however, in the case of the letter in question, we absolutely did. I was in attendance at the monthly meeting for business when this letter was presented for approval to the entire body. Without any hesitation, all present approved publicizing it in various ways, including sending it to the News & Record, and Sallie Clotfelter, as clerk, agreed to send it.
I am aware, also, that many (perhaps most?) other Quakers in North Carolina Yearly Meeting, as well as many other people of faith, are in unity with denouncing torture of prisoners of war.
Thank you for the opportunity to clarify this action by our Meeting about an issue that concerns us very deeply.

Ms. Hood,
Nothing personal here, but I think it's time for the N&R to give this issue a brief respite.
Although I have a deep respect for the practitioners of the Quaker religion I think at this point even the totally illiterate among us are aware of their stance on the "torture" of prisoners.
As I've already stated, I have no quarrel against either the message or the messenger, but I think at this point the N&R staff has beaten this horse well past the point of no return.
Filete de caballo anyone?

While I kind of agree with you, janherman, I find it good to see so many voices come out against this abhorrent practice.
I see this issue as one of great importance to the future of our nation (can you tell by my frequent posting about it?) and the moral tone that we will set for ourselves. This issue is a biggie- one that involves war and peace, life and liberty, innocence and guilt; ultimately right and wrong.

I hope every Quaker that attended that meeting doesn't decide to write in to verify that they approved of the message.

As far as I know, this is the first letter which refutes Arthur Lyon's claim that it was a personal letter. Now that we are clear on that issue, New Garden has made its position clear, and I applaud their stand and support their position.

AMEN, Carol Dunn!

Jan, I agree. No disrespect, but an LTE every day from a Quaker which basically states that Quakers are against torture (who woulda thunk it?) is getting rather repetitive.
Darryl & Carol, you are both Quakers correct? What happened? Was there a meeting a few weeks ago in which everyone was instructed to flood the op-ed page with LTEs against torture?
DD, please help me out here, write an LTE about Mark Foley. It's getting torturous to see the same message daily.

Dan, the Conservative Friends did not have any meetings that I am aware. Carol, how about NCYM-FUM? Was there a meeting of that group to discuss torture?
Dan, I believe that the issue began when an LTTE was written by Arthur Lyon of HP (HP Friends Mtg) voicing opposition to the LTTE signed by the Clerk of NGFM. Then on this past Saturday Marilyn White wrote a Counterpoint on Torture. Marilyn spoke from a personal perspective as an individual Friend. She (her Counterpoint) did not represent any specific Meeting.
So you see, the issue of torture is important to some people and they are doing everything within their power to keep the issue on the "front pages."
For those who believe that the N & R Editorial Staff allowing far too many LTTE on specific issues, maybe those people should consider writing an LTTE on that issue! That would make for some interesting discussion!

Thanks for clearing that up Darryl, I got the message that Friends are opposed to torture.
Your idea is really good about an LTE about repetitive LTEs. The SCAT LTEs are even more numerous!!

No big local meeting that I know of. Some Friend's Meetings and individuals have made statements about what they believe. AFSC and FCNL, national organizations located in DC have made statements and calls for peace and the end of torture. I would hope that all religions would want peace and the end of torture for our country and the world.

Dan,
It is obvious that you still think the GOP are the "moralists" and anyone who disagrees is the antithesis. Check this out:

The Amish in Lancaster PA are reported to be saying that they are accepting of what has happened there as G-d's Will...
it is my understanding that G-d knows 'the when' but not the 'how'...
I am hoping that those (unbelievers)who read these media reports from Lancaster do not form the idea that it was G-d's Will that a demon-possessed pedophile would execute innocent very young girls after sodomizing them...
if Satan's Will is now to mess with the virtually invisible to the world Amish and do so as despicably as possible, then if i were a pacifist 'friend', i would be having very serious second thoughts and preparing to defend myself against the Devil himself...

When was it determined that Roberts "sodomized" (i.e. sexually molested) the school girls in PA?
All the information that I have read/heard reports that there were no physical signs that would suggest anything of that nature happened. Does anyone have any differing information? If so, please inform the blog.
Carol, thanks for helping Buz out with the "Quaker Code!" Buz, my apologies, it just comes out that way as a standard.
Buz, just for clarity, there are two separate Yearly Meetings in NC. There is NCYM (see Carol's post)-FUM...Friends United Meeting (more evangelical). And NCYM (see Carol's post)-Conservative (more traditional Quaker). Each is wonderful in its own regard. Consider visiting one sometime when you have an opportunity. It would, at the very least, be an educational experience.

J4J,
I'm sure you will become angry with me for posting this, but I can't resist it.
Every post I read from you seems to have been created by someone who has intelligent thoughts. I believe that you have strong and sincere beliefs and think that you are at least of above average intelliegence.
However, what I don't understand is your near constant need to insult people. Darryl asks a simple question and you call him an idiot for not figuring it out himself, as if what that guy's plans are or what he had with him are just common knowledge. You liken Carol's religion to a cult, and I have seen you in the past take serious liberties with what the D stands for in Stevie D's name.
All this from someone who is too pious to spell out G-O-D.
Do you think it is acceptable, either socially or theologically to insult people? My understandings of Jesus is that he would not condone such behavior.
Such insulting behavior makes me seriously want to re-evaluate the earlier discussed opinion of you and question whether your posts are to be taken seriously or if they are
Jerry Springerish.

J4J, it must be a sad life. KY lube does not equate a crime. Were that the case, then there are quite a few people who need arresting!
While there may have been intentions of further crimes envisioned. The coroner has yet to state that there were any signs of sexual molestation of those young girls killed. So, check the record and state fact as they are known.

swanks, good efforts, however, I am not sure that you will not feel the wrath as well.
What I just realized is that I personally allowed J4J to turn this blog from one discussing the US's use of torture into one regarding the tragic death of school children in PA.
Maybe we should redirect at this point and discontinue discussing the school tragedy and discuss the LTTE topic matter!

you pacifist cultists posing as some kind of true branch of Christianity would turn the other cheek to satan himself.....shame on all of you...especially for sucking in shallow minded naive searchers and teaching them that yours is the way....G-d has a special place reserved for you and your prideful behavior...
