Hmmm...Buffalo or Hawaii? Tough call
In the Oct. 18 News & Record, there were two very interesting articles concerning FEMA.
One told of the storm damage in Buffalo, N.Y. The city was still coping with snow, floods, downed trees, the loss of power for 101,500 homes. Schools were still closed and 12 people had died due to problems and conditions in the area.
Yet, it was reported FEMA offered little guidance on reimbursements and during a tour of damage, ignored the situation.
Another article concerning the earthquake in Hawaii stated the EPA reported there were no spills that merited federal assistance. Yet, 54 hours after the quake, FEMA spent $250,000 to fly 100 officials there. That was one of the biggest deployments since Katrina.
After finding no catastrophe, some found busy work driving vans or loading boxes. Of course, these officials needed housing and transportation at FEMA's expense.
I lived in Buffalo for 33 years and experienced many storms of ice and snow, but I doubt that any would equal this one in 2006. In 1973 I spent a week in Hawaii, where weather and sights were wonderful.
If I had a choice of flying to Hawaii or going to Buffalo during a storm crisis, I know what I would choose. What would your choice be?

It's nice to see that people in NC still don't know what they are talking about and believe all that they hear.
My husband works with a contractor who works for FEMA and he just returned from the NY area. His former supervisor was just transferred to Buffalo. If you check the FEMA.gov web page you will see that it has been declared a disaster area and there is help there.
The one problem with FEMA is that they do not advertise that they are there. People have to find out for themselves. So tell the people you still know in Buffalo (I'm sure you still do) to check the web page.

My choice is to not respond to this letter. Rather, I'd like to respond to the letter that isn't here.
That is the letter that questions the News and Records continued cover-up of police corruption in the Greensboro Police Department. Why is the Rhino the only newspaper that is investigating the misdeeds of many police officers, high-level attorneys and other prominent citizens?
Why is the News & Record silent on this issue? Are they part of the corruption? Why are we not calling for resignations and jail sentences for the fiasco of Project Homestead, St James Homes, the money Earl Jones misplaced, the corruption in our police department, etc etc etc.
No, we get a cutesy story about someone trying to investigate where a leak came from. That's like doing a front-page story about airplane magazines the day after September 11th. Somebody is asleep at the wheel of is intentionally suppressing coverage of this story.

Too late, Nit.
We already had several front-page cutesy storys about investigating the day after September 11th, and several folks WERE sleeping at the wheel .. Clinton, well he was sleeping around, Bush was taking a nap after all that hard work chopping wood at the ranch .. I think Powell was working .. but everyone ignored him, Cheney was repaying his vested interests ... jeeze we could go on for days!
