Show support for troops with personal actions

In response to Rick Reitzug's question, "Which person is supporting you, (the troops)?": Whether you are displaying a ribbon of support or standing on the street corner protesting, void of personal action these demonstrations are nothing more than lip service.

Adopt a soldier and send him or her a letter of appreciation along with a care package filled with some tasty goodies and some simple necessities of life. Pray for them and give them a piece of America and a part of your heart! By doing so you will not only boost their morale but you also will demonstrate that you truly care for their well-being while they face dangerous challenges on a daily basis.

Robert,

You are so right. It's easy to bypass anything that requires true involvement when we have to put any personal effort into it. I'm as guilty as the rest so I am throwing no stones. I'm just saying thank you for reminding us, whether we agree with the war or not, that our troops should not be forgotten.

Other than my hospital's once a year care package to our troops (personal items, cards and chipping in for the exorbitant postage), daily prayers and online cards, I have done little. This will change, starting today.

How do I go about acquiring names and addresses?

Work to bring them home safely.
It is only going to get worse under the current administration. Here's today's Washington Post story through the MSNBC site:

Many of us and our families are sending packages with all sorts of goodies, as we hate that those young men and women have been sent into a political arena that is far from the war on terror.
That's where the lie of the right has veered off course. Some of the most supportive people for the troops are the same ones who want to bring them home.

It seems the rah rah, war on terror folks are the ones who apply a ribbon to their bumper and think they are "supporting the troops". Get real folks. Stop your calling anything contrary to Bush's war, "cut and run" and think about why we are in Iraq....longer than we were in WWII!

Saddam is gone. Elections have been held. We should not be in there policing a civil war. Although, I hope Rummy, Cheney and Bush will at least admit it is a civil war we caused!

Yvonne,

Here's something I've been involved with for quite some time:

My bookmark is for the Navy, since that is my background. You can get to the other branches through that page.

Thanks, Nic. My oldest son also served in the Navy, back in the early eighties.

Whow, there is another area to comment in concerning the support of troops. I just ran across this one on my way to see the one on the Oct 31st support the troops debate that I have commented on twice. Some good stuff in that letter to the editor.
For those of you that are in this one, some of your names are familiar.
For Yvonne, I have two sites for you. www.anysoldier.com and www.asa-usa.org
The latter stands for America Supporting Americans.
My troops happen to be registered under the anysoldier.com. I work with army, airforce, navy and marines. We travel the dangerous roads together. I see many armed forces members each day that are traveling the dangerous roads, and anything that I receive goes to them. So you will be helping many if you sign up at one of these sites. I am a Navy man with 23 1/2 years service. I have signed my troops up for the anysoldier.com If you go to that web site and look you will see my name under Navy. The name is IC2 Joe Crews. I screen everything that is sent to us. There is to be no home baked goods, opened cd's, alcohol or drugs. The home baked goods, because of not knowing where they came from. the cd's because of viruses to our computers, the last two is easy to figure out.
Thanks to all of you for your support. Please check out the other responses from the Oct31 support the troops.
Thanks
Jcool

jcool--good to hear from you--sounds like your heart is in the right place.

Mr. Flowers, I'm not one to stand on a corner to protest, I do other things. I do disagree with you when you criticize those who stand on the corner protesting as you feel that they may be devoid of personal action and are giving mere lip service. If a person is standing on a street corner protesting, whether I agree with their message or not, it takes energy and planning to prepare for getting there, then going there and then protesting. That's alot of energy in action. That's not my style but that's better than just making PC statements.
