‘Singles' encourage underage smoking
I love small retailers like the one featured by the News & Record on Nov. 19, "A most Ungeneral Store."
Maria Johnson nicely captures the charm of the University General Store, depicting why its many features really earn it the reputation as an "Ungeneral" country store.
Unfortunately, one aspect really does place the store outside of the mainstream: the retail sale of single cigarettes. Selling cigarettes individually is a violation of federal law: 26 CFR 296.166 states that all cigarettes offered for sale must be in proper packages that bear the Surgeon General's warning.
Additionally, the sale of "singles" has been shown to increase youth access, providing an inexpensive way to start smoking without the worry of hiding a pack of cigarettes from parents and teachers (Action on Smoking and Health).
I truly want to see stores such as the University General Store thrive, but we need to help it do so without the sale of "singles," and not at the expense of our youth.

Would it pass the smoke Nazi's' test if they could print the Head Nanny's warning on a single cigarette?

6string,
You're right. They are all over the place. What ought to be against the law is what some of these places charge for a single cigarette. The going rate at one store I frequent is 50 cents each. (the value pack is 3 for $1). 50 cents a piece calculates to $10 a pack.
I'm not going to get all high and mighty though. I've actually purchased a single cigarette before when I was trying to quit smoking. It was actually a help to me because I just wanted that one cigarette but knew if I purchased a whole pack I'd be back smoking full-time again.
One reason I hesitated, however, is that the cigarettes were all stuffed in a cup together where customers would pick them out themselves. I didn't like the idea of other people's fingers touching the part of the cigarette where my mouth was going to be. The least they could do would be to put the non-filter side up. :)

One other issue I have with this letter is that we are talking about a University store. Most university students are adults of smoking age, not kids living with their parents.
Also, regardless of whether the store is selling full packs or single cigarettes, they are still responsible for checking ID's to verify that the buyer is of legal age.

Anyone under the age of 80 who smokes is either deaf & blind OR is a total idiot. I'm sure I'll tick off a few posters here, but I could care less.
Purposefully taking smoke into the lungs is about as ridiculous as anything a human could do. Let the ignorant continue though, as they fund a lot of things with the tax revenue. And as my friend says, "Being stupid is not against the law".

If it's against the law, it's against the law and that's that. Enforce the law and be done with it.

The good news is the University General Store only sells rolling paper in packs of 50. We wouldn't want people lighting up just one joint, after all.

"We wouldn't want people lighting up just one joint, after all."
Not when they could smoke out of the hand-blown glass pipes they have for sale.

True, Den. And the Slim Jims, Doritos and Ben and Jerry freezer are just inches away from the pipes. Those UGS people think of everything.

Sheeeeesh. How typical a post from the arrogant coward. I doubtthe end of the post, too. Idon'tbelieve that DD has a friend.

DemonDeacon, most teenagers think that "it won't happen to them." Most smokers start as teenagers or even younger, and then they're hooked. I've been very lucky; despite (or because of) two smoking parents and a smoking child care provider, I've never smoked either evil weed. I saw both my parents struggle to quit smoking, and I'm very disappointed that my father has started chewing tobacco. Nicotine is more addictive than cocaine or heroin. Smokers aren't idiots; they are addicts.
nitpicker, I'm happy you were able to quit. Nonetheless, I'm for anything that keeps people from starting to smoke. Selling single cigarettes sounds like bad mojo to me. The police don't have the resources to run stings more than once or twice a year, if that. The temptation of easy money is difficult to resist.
pragmatist, excellent point about the rolling papers used for joints. Believe it or not, smoking marijuana is worse for the health than smoking tobacco.
Denzian, right now the Greensboro Police Department is so screwed up that we're lucky that they can enforce the felony laws. Maybe.

Nic Danger,
Sounds like you're a tobacco dependent weakling. Are you not man enough to kick the habit? People quit every day and they don't go to the Betty Ford Center to do it. Guess you have that "oral fixation" thing---watch out the Baptists are after you!

"Believe it or not, smoking marijuana is worse for the health than smoking tobacco"
Almost all the research I've seen says differently.
"Smokers aren't idiots, they're addicts"
Good point. Many of them are. Myself, I actually LIKED smoking for a time. It was a convenient excuse to take a break at work and provided an excellence opportunity to socialize with others. I stopped liking it when I began coughing my lungs out every time I woke up and ran out of breath climbing into my car.
If everyone who had a bad habit was an idiot, then everyone would be an idiot. I'm sure DD doesn't have any. It's everyone else who is an idiot. Right?

Nit,
Can you read? Have you read the warnings printed on cigarettes? If you answered yes to either one of these and you still smoke..YOU ARE AN IDIOT.
Truth really hurts, but you should try to improve yourself, not justify your own ignorance. Of course, if you enjoy it, keep smoking! It pays a lot of bills for our states.

It must have taken a team of leatherworkers weeks to make the saddle for your horse, DemonDeacon, because you're up on one high f**king horse.

Amen, Denzien. It's impossible to post an opinion here that differs with the 'DemonDeacon' without the infantile and boorish insults. His repetitive and childlike tantrums are similar to a schoolyard bully. Couple that with the anonymity of the Internet, and you have someone who comes across as an insecure bomb thrower with little to offer other than his insults.

DD seems to be ahead in the egregious insult contest he's been participating in with neocon. I've only seen a couple of post from neo the past couple of days.

Beadbaby, I suspect you will ignore this as you seem to have joined the flock of liberals that make up about 90% of this blog, but if you follow the blog closely, or even go back into the archives, you will find that the world traveler is the instigator of about 99.9% of the insultathons. He insults people before they post a comment or even those who hasn't posted on a particular thread.
I think it fills a void in his life. In reality he is probably a p***y whipped nerd who spends a great deal of time looking over his shoulder...just my opinion, your mileage may vary.
He has been scolded by "one of his own" on this thread and so you can see he hasn't responded. He will lick his wounds for a couple of days, then return with the same old bs after Denzien's scolding has run it's course. Like a scolded puppy will eventually return to lick his master's hand, so goes it with the world traveler.

neocon- you've done the same thing- on many occasions, so I'd lay low in criticizing DemonDeacon, else the pot call the kettle black, and after all the skid marks you've left leaving threads after a thoughtful rebuke, I'd say those marks are as black as they come.
Posted on December 10, 2006 12:57 AM
You are wrong, Denzein. The world traveler feeds off his supporters and when one of his supporters scolds him he runs, whimpering, like a kicked puppy.
I, on the other hand, have no supporters here. Nor do I parrot other people's posts to try and make myself look legitimate.
I urge you to scan back through the archives and find count the times I have initiated the insultathons. The world traveler is always the first to hurl child like insults...even against someone who has not spoken on the given subject. He is a phony of the worst sorts, imo. Your mileage will vary I'm sure.
On second thought, no need to research the archives, you already know I'm speaking the truth.

PS, I'm off to funeral out of town, don't read this as leaving a black mark.

Actually, I'm right. I simply stated that, in the face of a "thoughtful rebuke" you turn tail and run. And that's fine, of course. I only implore you to not criticize others for doing the same, because, you know, that would be disingenuous.
And, for the record, no skid marks on this thread- I applaud you for following through. Hope your travels bring you home safely, and I'm sorry for your loss.
