Lindley Park's coyote deserved chance to live

I was dismayed to read in the News & Record that the coyote in the Lindley Park neighborhood was trapped and killed. Surely, we can find a better way to manage our wildlife than deliberately baiting and killing animals who have not presented a known threat.

Relocation would have been a much better solution and should have been used, absent any evidence that this coyote was an immediate threat to the public or had shown evidence of being rabid. I understand why a trap was set for coyotes in Battlefield Park earlier this year, since a coyote, suspected to be rabid, had been seen acting aggressively toward park visitors.

I do not believe killing the Lindley Park coyote was justified, however, under the circumstances. Humane relocation of this animal was a better option. Based on the information provided in your article, the euthanizing of this animal, and I certainly hope it was merciful, was the wrong choice.

and if the coyote had bit someone, you would be yelling at folks asking why they didn't do something sooner. and as for it not presenting a known threat... coyotes are put into the same field as pitbulls, rottweilers, dobermans and the rest. they already have a track record and thats all people need to be justified in killing one when found roaming. I tell ya what, the next time i see a wild animal running around, I'll give you a call and you come pick it up.

C'mon folks! The coyote could have joined the SBC and been a productive member---as far as I know, they don't have any rules against Coyotes!

Are you sure it didn't just wander a little too close to a Vietnamese Restaurant?

That's why I always order the tofu.

Just kidding. Here's a plug for a great new Viet place I've discovered, the Viet Noodle shop across from Bills Pizza on High Point road about 1/2 block north of Florida Street. A real mom and pop type place, inexpensive, excellent food quick service, smiling faces. Try the Viet fried bananna with the glaze on top--It's a Viet Krispy Kreme.

Hugh,
Great place! I too, have been there and agree with you, it is fabulous.

I'll have to check it out. I love vietnamese food. That building has been one failed restaurant/ice cream shop after another. Hopefully the good word of mouth will lead to success.

Ms. Harris:
It's such a relief to know that you have such compassion. It's even more of a relief to know that, in the future, officials can simply depend upon you (and other LTE writers who share your compassion) to take care of such animals and keep them safe from harm. You ARE saying you will take these animals into your care, right?

Sorry, I tend to agree with 6strings... you probably would be the first one lambasting officials when the animal bit someone.

Just so you know, there are both coyotes and 'coydogs' in the eastern part of the county. I see them usually in the late afternoon or evening in the field behind my house. They serve to keep the 'critter' population down.

When you kill off all of the medium sized predators you end up with an overabundance of mice, rats, moles, voles, rabbits and the such. When Doug Clark had this discussion in his blog I offered that my backyard would have been a fine place to release the Lindley Park coyote not because I would want to "love it and pet it and squeeze it and call it George," but because it would be a natural and suitable addition to our rural area.

Correction to my first post:

The coyote would be kicked out of the SBC if it were a Gay coyote!
