Reckless debt will cost U.S. workers

Where did Karl Rove find James Sherk (column, "Pundits crying wolf on wages," Nov. 6)?

The big problem that Sherk ignores is the national debt and $260 billion added to that debt last fiscal year alone by this administration and Congress, and they are still spending a billion dollars a week, with borrowed money from China and others, in Iraq.

Our soldiers in Iraq are being kept alive and fighting with borrowed money. These debts will not be paid by our "government." These debts will be paid in the century ahead by the American workers, not the profiteering corporations -- big oil, pharmaceuticals and health care providers.

It doesn't take an economist, nor a student of the Center for Data Analysis at The Heritage Foundation, to explain who will pay these debts.

Another good letter. What we "doom and gloom" and "Bush Bashers" have been saying for years is finally coming to the attention of those who could have prevented it years ago. I'm afraid it is too little, too late.

Carol,

I agree. Two intelligent coherent letters in a row. Yeah, they are pretty much criticizing without solutions but at least they appear to have the power to think.

The solution to the national debt: try to get out of Iraq, repeal the tax cuts for the rich, and cut out pork-barrel projects. In other words, try to emulate Bill Clinton's economic policies and repudiate W's. Even W's father recognized what Reaganesque economic policy of allowing the national debt to balloon out of sight: voodoo economics. He toed the party line after the VP nomination, but he nailed it originally.

BB,
You speak my mind!

Sounds a lot like the 1 billion dollar shortage in Raleigh. Solution, let Black play for his on lawyers, no more tall ships for the Tax Hike Mike to buy votes.Get rid of all the brass at the dot, these are the jokers that just made a 18 million dollar screw up on I40 not counting the estimated 2-3 lives that this will cost. Cut sales tax and gas tax to level of neighboring states. Gas 17 cent a gallon higher in NC than Va. this morning. Wal Mart full of NC cars this morning, shoppers saving dollars that we could have in NC. It amazing how the NR knows how to solve all the nations problems and does not have a clue to NC problems.

Dog,

How will cutting gas taxes help lower a 1 billion dollar deficit? I'm not saying I disagree with cutting gas taxes but I think the main issue is spending, spending, spending.

This Dog Bites Back and nitpicker, what state services are you Personally willing to give up or see cut in order to cut back on the shortfall and maybe have enough left to cut the gasoline tax. Public education for your children? Roads (remember Dan has to drive to Charlotte on a regular basis)? Clean water? Police? It's easy to sacrifice what other people use; sacrifice should be borne by all.

Nitpicker,Beadbaby,
How much money is taken out of NC by high taxes? Let me use myself as a example. I travel a lot. The car I use for travel is a 2001 Ford, it has 152,000 miles on it.( about 25000 miles a year) I buy less than 100 gallons a year in NC. Why I can save 10-25 cent a gallon in other states. Today I going to Va. to buy a tv for a gift, I will save 2% on the sales tax, I will eat lunch, and I am sure the wife will spend, on the grandchildren. Now how many other people do the same thing? This is money lost to the merchants of NC, money lost to state.Example 2 the town of Yanceyville, has busted their butts to increase the motel tax, Yanceyville has 1 motel.I heard this increase will bring in about $800 a year. Guess what the seniors posted this all over the internet to avoid Yanceyville. They blogged go to Va. and save money. How much money have the people of Yanceyville lost because of this, bet its mmore than $800.Nitpicker you are right about spending, I thought I gave some good examples of waste.Beadbaby, why should you have to give up services, Va., has much lower taxes than NC., yet they there schools are light years ahead of NC. schools. There gas tax is much lower than ours, yet in my opinion there roads are better than ours.I just drove from the coast to Tennessee, I 40 stinks. High taxes do not mean better services. However they drive money away. Look for a sneakie 900 million dollar tax increase. I will blog details later.
