Editorial cartoon was insulting to all women
I am very proud of my three daughters (university students) and like very much to read the News & Record because it is just and objective all the time. But the cartoon about the crazy woman (Jan. 22), I consider, is sad, insulting and offensive for all women in this country.
Women are as smart and worthy as men. They can do every position with excellent performance. We need to remember the history of women like Margaret Thatcher, Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi and Elizabeth I of England. They have been so valuable.
We have to take off the stereotype, and prejudices about women. She is well as mother and professional in life, and we need to respect her.

Didn't see the cartoon but shame on you N&R for breaking the law of political correctness and "offending" all the women in the country according to the author.
Remember: the only fair game left in PC land is 1)heterosexual white males 2)conservative Christians and 3)fat people.

If "the News & Record is just and objective all the time", then you really shouldn't have a complaint, now should you?
Posted on January 31, 2007 8:04 AM
Dan,
You forgot football players, especially ones that play at Guilford College.
Posted on January 31, 2007 8:07 AM
"They can do every position with excellent performance". She didn't really say that, did she?
Posted on January 31, 2007 8:13 AM
you forgot feral cats too.
and take fat people off the list, dan. I'm offended by that...put skinny people on there.
Posted on January 31, 2007 8:32 AM
Would like to see the cartoon. I have not been insulted today. It seems that someone is offended by almost anything printed. I am thankful for a thick skin.
Bert, I think the letter writer is a man who does not have a strong command of the English language.

Bert,
That one got me too. Of course, I was already giddy after reading this: "because it is just and objective all the time".
Posted on January 31, 2007 9:01 AM
Hey ORR! Where have you been? Ok I'll add football players, lacrosse players and feral cats to the list.
Bert, that line raised my eyebrows too. I'm sure the N&R picked up on that but let it slide.
Posted on January 31, 2007 9:04 AM
Okay they can insult women, but they can't run the cartoon with the Prophet Mohammed in it?
Posted on January 31, 2007 10:14 AM
Dan,
I've been around, and I check in on posts from time to time, but I have refrained from posting as I got weary of it. No one ever really listens to anything that is said on these boards, it's just attacks and insults. I find that it's just better on my B.P., if I refrain from getting in the fray.
I am impressed, though, that you and neocon expose yourselves willingly to the attacks every day. You must have really thick skin, though, as the usual suspects hammer away at you.
Posted on January 31, 2007 12:12 PM
Guilford College has a football team?
Posted on January 31, 2007 12:27 PM
I'm offended by the words: 'and', 'it' and 'they' also the numbers 4 and 17
Posted on January 31, 2007 1:03 PM
Glad you jumped in ORR. I agree, it's the same 'ol same 'ol, especially with the Iraq letters. If I mention anything, even criticism of what's going on over there, I'm instantly labelled "part of the 21%" of blind Bush surrogates and even worse. That subject is the exact same everytime, witness today's LTE, nothing changes. I'm bored with the same comments day in and day out on Iraq so I mainly post on different subjects.
Luckily we've had a few different topics like feral cats, retread tires, the Guilford College situation, and women who "can do every position with excellent performance"!!
Yep, Neo and I are the only ones who regularly post from the conservative side. I do have thick skin an sleep well every night regardless of the attacks. Of course 90% of them are from one person.
We're leaving Friday for 8 days in the FL Keys. Being self-employed, I'll still have to check my email while on vacation but I promised my wife I'd stay off the blog. I did it for 12 days last summer while in Europe and it was actually a welcome break.
Keep coming back ORR.

Here is a perfect example ORR, although directed at Neocon:
neocon,
You are a dinosaur. Trying to have a debate with you is like debating which gives out more light, a single candle (neocon) or an electric light bulb (the rest of the world).
Take your yapping somewhere else, as we've heard you repeat over and over the same stuff--are you a housebound patient or are you posting from Charter Hills?
Wanna guess who the author is?

"It's fine to disagree with one another's opinions, but please attack ideas, not people. Personal attacks have no place here."
This appears on the top of the blog each time one logs in. I guess some don't read it, the above post being a perfect example.

Dan, your shell seems to be a little thinner than you would like to admit. Have a great vacation.
Posted on January 31, 2007 3:30 PM
Nah just pointing out the obvious. Thanks, we plan on having a good vacation and escaping the cold. BTW, glad to see the Deacs won a game last night.

Well Dan ya gotta admit Meow is pretty much stuck ... I hope I've grown with this blog, certainly have looked up a bunch of stuff.
Where Meow looses me in posting obvious BS and then, e.g., back peddling by declaring and Snopes.com rebutts as "not the blood of Christ", which it may not be ... but come-on Neo, let's get real.
Frankly, I'm not sure why DoubleD comes down so hard on you - I rightfully (wink & smile) accuse you of being over-simplistic, and you are partisan as heck. You drive me nuts by acknowledging the limits of the current Republican Leadership, but ... come-on Dan, ever pull an non-blue lever?
Posted on January 31, 2007 4:12 PM
My guess is that Dan pulls a lot of non-blue levers.
If the N&R had something like a call-blocker for the blogs, they could make some money off the deal. Not to block anyone from posting, just block them from viewing on your own computer.
Of course, then I'd have to go buy the call-block blocker.

Well JDR, I've had fun here and learned alot from you and others. I rightfully (wink & smile) accuse you of being what you are, an engineer. Some, by no means all, of your posts will meander endlessly without a clear point. Maybe that's my simplicity. I try to read most of 'em but a busy executive and parent can't spend all day on the blog. Despite our disagreements I would say we are always respectful of each other.
I know I taught you one thing: how to spell eeeeeeeeevvvvviiill :)
You ask DD why he comes down so hard on me. I find some folks who preach tolerance become very intolerant when other ideas don't mesh with their own. That's my best guess.
One example galvanized in my mind was the LTEs about the S. Baptists and homosexuality. My point is that a private organization has the right to allow membership based upon it's beliefs.
For that I was called a "homophobe of the worst kind" and told my gay friend of over 20 years was "imaginary".
I do enjoy this blog because it's the only one I know of where we can discuss international, national, state AND local issues.
I'll be around tomorrow but will probably not post while on vacation, it's a vacation after all.
Posted on January 31, 2007 5:00 PM
Dan,
There's some pretty good other local blogs that you might enjoy. There's "The Conservative Alternative" and "Guarino". They both have a nice tone to them and everyone is respectful of others, especially the hosts. That's one of things that I like about them, their hosts are actively involved in the blog, and keep the tone professional. Try them out. They also discuss national and local issues, and you don't always see everything that happens blamed on George Bush. He gets his share of grief, but so do others.
Posted on January 31, 2007 9:12 PM
ORR, Haven't heard of the Conservative Alternative. Can you provide the link? I know Dr. Guarino, used to work with him many years ago. He's a very educated principled guy.
I do like this blog because of the reasons I mentioned plus there are usually 3-5 topics each day. Thanks in advance.

The world traveler is a one note horn. Without fail he will attack Bush or Cheney then wait for a pat on the head and a 'good post, DD' from one of his elders. He seems to thrive on what his cohorts think of him. Notice how sullen and withdrawn he becomes when one of his own scolds him. Just like a puppy who has peed in the carpet. Such scoldings usually results in a period of sulking for about 48 hrs, then he's back in form, looking for approval from his peers.
cRock-o-...feller seems unable to accept the fact that there are some who just don't give a damn about his left wing 'conservatism'. He strikes me as a chap who is used to getting his way without question and when he yells "S**T" he is accustomed to an answer of "how much and where at?"
Sorry, cRock-o-...feller and world traveler, nothing personal, but I couldn't give a s**t less what your combined opinions of me are. Without the liberal media links the both of you offer as 'proof' of some far left point made by Keith Olbermann or some npr babe, all I see is a couple of empty suits.
Have a nice vacation, Dan. I'll try to offer a bit of sanity here now and then, but I expect instead of 3 or 4 gang banging me, it will now be 7 or 8 for a while.... :-)

ya know, Meow - I never asked you to like or "respect" or any of that stuff ..
I do ask for posts backed by more than worn prejudice, or backed by fictional letters from obsure (imaginary?) military men.
I have also asked for clarification of where you're coming from - it would help understand and maybe even warrant some slack - but apparently you are paranoid too.
Except for following a youtube link posted in here, I've never watched Olbermann - so I don't know.
If NPR a bit Left? Sure; certainly many - but not all - of the "shows" are .. but the news coverage is pretty solid, especially when combined with other venues.
You and I can honestly dispute whether the intellegence going into Iraq was knowing twisted or naively cherry picked or simply and honestly missed ... but most of the data I present in this blog - is backed by several reliable sources. I do hate being wrong about things that are clear, taking responsibility for the validity of what I post - and fictional letters from obsure (imaginary?) military men do not qualify.
Posted on February 1, 2007 8:39 AM
As for "getting [my] way without question", I work primarily with traditional Blue Collar Trade people - pipe fitters and welders, structural steel walkers, HVAC technicians, millrights - all salt-of-the-earth hard working men (mostly) that are out there in the freezing cold - literally today. Yea when I'm cold I get to come inside .. but most have respect for me - because I have respect for them. When doing something, I usually get their input, and when they want to do something a specific way I usually bow to their hands-on knowledge. Only when they don't "get" the science - some things are counter intuitive - or when want to install something the easy why but the next guy won't be able to service it - do I put my foot down, because ultimately I am responsible - to the user for function, to the repair guy for servicablity - and to these guys installing it because I'll be working with them on the next job - long term relationships.
So with all due respect, Meow - you are clueless.
Posted on February 1, 2007 8:42 AM
Good for you.
But you'll notice, I never bothered to comment on this thread until you felt it necessary to insult me. Ditto the world traveler.
"Obsure military men"?...you've lost me. (hey another oppurtunity for more insults?)
Posted on February 1, 2007 11:26 AM
The "obscure (imaginary?) military man" whom you quoted (twice that I recall) was Retired USMC Lieutenant General Chuck Pitman, last quoted by you on January 5, 2007 11:26 AM, in this link:
http://blog.news-record.com/staff/letters/archives/2007/01/the_world_celeb.html#comments
You did post BS - twice (you'd posted the same link earlier, and it was poo-pooed earlier) - then you defend, then back-peddle - then finally you admit reality when forced too.
Hey didn't Clinton face the same dilemma? Maybe you two have more in commons than you think ... (wink)!
As for insulting you .. the intent was to differentiating you from Dan ... but if you're still struck by any reality, you must agree you remain in a closed loop time warp.
That's not an insult, just a probably true statement - like one would also call "in a closed loop time warp" the gray-headed lady in the bee-hive hair-do that listens only to Elvis.
... and I say probably true statement because I don't know, because it is a true statement that you are paranoid, sharing nothing personal nor of value but constantly repeating "liberals? ba humbug".
Posted on February 1, 2007 1:00 PM
"sharing nothing personal nor of value"...
I'd say that's in the eye of the beholder. Some, and I include myself, would describe the constant drumbeat of "the 20% who still worship Bush" and the lame, yet never ending, ridicule of anyone who doesn't march in lockstep with the socialist agenda put forth by the left as 'of no value', but your criticism is curiously lacking when it comes to these individuals...well, maybe not curiously. Don't get me wrong...I don't really give a damn whether you chastise them or not, I'm just pointing out what I view as your blatant hypocrisy.
"liberals? ba humbug"...

...I like it!
Posted on February 1, 2007 5:42 PM
Hypocracy? I don't see it that way. There is no reason to challenge statements when I generally agree - maybe the blogger doesn't research or read and the opinion came from osmosis. Who cares? Why stir up happy dogs?.
I did tell Prag the other day to cite his quotes
I generally ignore DoubleD because he says things specifically to insult or incite.
I rag on Dan because he & I would get along great even though he is well educated but maybe not well informed.
Other's I may disagree with, but they seem to have thought out positions - examples would include JC Burcham
Some - like the long lost Wormer - say such stupid stuff that it needs to be challanged, although I'm not sure they will ever think for themselves.
You're a bit unique - often you are just shallow - like your stance on Gays, but occassionally you say what might be thoughtful stuff - but when one digs into it, it is a really simplistic "military - right-or-wrong"; most think only Jesus walked on water, possible due to a sand bar. You also claim to want no support from anyone - and that's probably real - yo're probalby a survival freak - but you get "free stuff" from the government all the time (like we all do), and you can't admit that forest has trees.
... yea, you're just silly.
Posted on February 2, 2007 12:17 AM
"Survival freak"...lol
Free "stuff" from the government... this is a joke. If ,and that's a mighty big IF, I ever were to receive anything from the government, I have paid for it through the nose ten fold. This is a big problem I have with you liberals, you view anything that the almighty government allocates as "free". Never mind that someone else was robbed to pay for it.
Bottom line is this cRock-o-...feller, and I'm repeating myself, what your (or anyone else's) opinion is of me means not jack squat. I've said this from the beginning and I'll say it again, methinks you are a blowhard-a blowhard with a big vocabulary- but still a blowhard. I'll admit I enjoy plucking your strings every once in a while and predicting what the reaction will be. Although I'm usually right, every once in a while you will react in a unexpected manner and I will read the whole post instead of skimming a line here and there.
Here's a clue dude, no one (with the exception of those who enjoy being led around by the nose with pnac letters and the such) gives a damn what your next read will be. I'm reading another John Grisham novel. Do you care? ...No. Should you care?...No. Give us a break. The great ones feel no need to tout their accomplishments. I see a great deal of touting from you.
