Illegal placards spoil Greensboro's beauty

Greensboro has been searching for a title and identity. I suggest "Greensboro: City of Placards."

Many business owners and residents feel entitled to post signs proclaiming low cost mortgages, post office hiring now, learning centers, cash for your house, etc. Invariably these signs appear on the public right-of-way and in the dark of night.

Some time ago a representative of the streets department told me city workers try to remove illegal signs when they are able. The signs appear in bursts and workers don't have time to pick up all of them.
The signs are an eyesore and rapidly become litter underfoot, in the street, in trees and even in our streams. There are legitimate ways to advertise.

A recent sprouting of green signs touted a learning center. Think of the message this sends to students: Be irresponsible, break the law, stick a sign up anywhere. It's making a buck that counts for them. It's easy to solve the problem.

Take down illegal signs when you see them.

Illegal signs, indeed. How do we sleep at night?

Nit, another LTE from someone with too much time on his hands. I never notice these signs. I worry more about illegal aliens invading our city rather than illegal signs.

I suspect that Mr. Schiller is someone who is extremely sensitive to things he regards as unesthetic or out of place, perhaps to the point of having OCD or at least tendencies thereto. I'm pretty insensitive to things like that, as you'd know if you ever saw my house. My sister, on the other hand, can't stand for anything to be out of place. She vacuums her house as soon as she gets home because the cats shed fur. She dusts every day. For her, these things that I don't even notice are a big problem for her.

So, this issue probably bothers him as much as the traffic on Wendover bothers Bob Slone. It's trivial to us, but let's not trivialize Mr. Schiller's feelings and opinions.

Dan,

Interesting point regarding illegal aliens. The other day I was at the local Sheetz and noticed one of these 'illegal' signs in Spanish. It was a job posting in spanish where the person could earn $250 a week. Bonus pay for overtime and holidays.

That illegal sign kinda ticked me off. Almost to the point where I would "take down illegal signs when I see them" But, generally, its not something I notice or care too much about. I'm more apt to notice the election signs still up from last year's election. Not that I care enough to write an lte about it.

Beadbaby,

Let's not trivialize the guy's feelings. Instead, let's diagnose him with a mental disorder! Just kidding. :)

I agree about the placard eyesores, however I think that those ugly plastic advertising "news" stands scattered on our city sidewalks are worse. The city of Greensboro does not charge these advertisers one penny for these grotesque red, turquoise and yellow plastic stands masquerading as newspaper dispensers for apartment rentals, car sellers, etc! Are they "legal"? They certainly are cheap looking and putting profit in someone's pocket while uglifying our streets. Why not just pick them up and take them to the dump?
