The voters have spoken

With the result of the last election, Americans have presented an edict to all of our elected U.S. Senate and House members.

That edict is to get out of Iraq, secure our borders and not approve a "guest worker" program.

Such a program would give amnesty to illegal immigrants.

Those officials who do not follow this edict should be recalled from office for supporting that which is illegal and for not supporting the will of the American people.

Immigration, properly controlled, is a part of the American tradition and good for America. But it must be legal and it must be controlled.

There are many immigrants who have spent much time, money and effort to become citizens of this great country and they are still waiting for their turn.

Permitting illegal immigrants to jump in front of them would not be ethical.

Amen, Mr. Colozzi.

The military hasn't updated stats on the web yet, but we have just gone over the 3,000 mark as of yesterday.

Regarding illegal immigration, the corporations are much to blame, and have quietly sat back, and raked in major profits off of cheap labor. Deregulation of industries was priority #1 in the 80's, and now we are seeing what happens when you don't value your American workers, and are free to outsource.

(a.k.a. downsizing...or as companies executives and shareholders call it, "right sizing")

An edict, Mr. Colozzi, is a formal declaration having the force of law. We do not create edicts (thank goodness!) with our votes but elect men and women we hope will represent our views.

Within the minds of the millions of voters who went to the polls this November was a multitude of views on a host of issues we were hoping to have represented in our government. Reducing those results down to two simplistic stands on two very complex issues is a failure to understand how our democracy works--and sometimes doen't work--to create a government by the people and for the people.

End of civics lesson. Class dismissed.

Mandate is probably the word this LTE was looking for, but even that is a bit strong for the narrow voting majorities Democrats will have in Congress.
We're now in a holding pattern while the president makes up his mind to do what he should have done two years ago, or to do what he's vowed he'd never do but which may be the only viable option considering how messed up things are - our Iraqi allies couldn't execute their ex-dictator without stirring up more sectarian hatred.
Immigration is a tough nut to crack. Even those who have consistently opposed allowing illegals into our work force haven't explained how we'll get the work done without them or what will happen to the small business people who depend on their purchases to stay in business.
Maybe the best we can hope for is to improve security at border crossings to keep out obvious problems while increasing patrols along the open areas. Instead, we seem determined to build fences with illegal labor.

Yet again, I believe that we should make legal immigration easier, especially for law-abiding people who want to become US citizens. In my experience, most illegal immigrants don't want to be here illegally; if the quotas were relaxed or eliminated, they'd jump through all the legal hoops gladly. A student getting the coveted green card is cause for celebration in my class. As for illegal immigrants already here, give them the opportunity to go through the process that legal immigrants go through, minus the entry of course. Let them know that committing a crime is grounds for immediate deportation. But let's give the otherwise law-abiding immigrants a chance.

Then why did they elect a pro-war party?

Easy Paul - America had a choice: A pro-war sans-planning party using the war for political advantage - but no fagoots in church - or one alternative guy that was clearly a bozo. Third party choices are repressed by #1 & #2 alternating red and blue.
