We should establish Bill of Rights Day in the city
We should come together, regardless of our political affiliations, and celebrate our core values and establish a Bill of Rights Day. I would like to urge our town to celebrate The Bill of Rights for several reasons.
First, the Bill of Rights declares the idea that makes America unique. We have rights as individuals, it says, and government must respect them. Most other countries do not have a constitution with such a clear statement.
Second, our Constitution would not have become the law of the land without the Bill of Rights. Several states refused to join the Union unless the Bill of Rights was included. When Virginia ratified the Bill of Rights on Dec. 15, 1791, only then could the United States become a new nation.
Third, our military people have served, fought and died to preserve the Constitution and our Bill of Rights. To celebrate Bill of Rights Day on Dec. 15 would annually remind us of how their sacrifices preserved not just "the country," but some very specific guarantees of liberty.
Fourth, an annual Bill of Rights Day would remind all members of government -- policemen, prosecutors, bureaucrats, judges and politicians -- that government exists to serve, not to rule, the people. Our civic core values lie in the Bill of Rights. What American could oppose the concept of preserving all of the Bill of Rights for all citizens?

I agree. But first we must find a free-speech zone in the middle of nowhere to hold the rally.

Completely off topic, but Congratulations to Wake Forest for a valiant effort in Orange Bowl last night. Maybe next year.........

I second Hugh's motion.
What a fantastic season.
Congratulations also to UNCG's basketball team that nearly knocked off NC State last night.

Agreed, Nitpicker. As an alumnus of both UNCG and Wake, I am proud of both teams for valiant efforts that came up short, and pleased with the direction of both programs.

A similar idea has already been implemented: its called Law Day and it happens on May 1. This year the topic is Empowering Youth, Assuring Democracy. For those of you with kids in grades 4-12, look for a flyer about our contest. The kids' work will be displayed at the Elon Law School on May 1 and a speakers panel will be presented to the general public on that day. Anyone who wants more information can contact the Greensboro Bar Association, the League of Women Voters, or N.C. Courtwatch.

We need a Basketball Day to be established in North Carolina, to be celebrated on the Friday that the ACC tournament begins.
Employees would be given a 5-hour floating holiday, which could be used from 12pm-5pm on that Friday, or any other day of the year.
Restaurants and Bars would be required to have 1/2 price wings, and 2 flat screens per 250 square feet, to be no less than 72".
What do ya think Hugh, Nit, and Howie?

Go Deacs!
Thanks to all who have made great comments toward the Demon Deacons.
The Deacon Club charter trip brought us all safe and sound back to Greensboro yesterday. While our valiant team did not win the game, they made us all PROUD TO BE A DEACON! Miami Herald could not say enough good things about our school, and the people in Miami were absolutely fantastic to us. One of the many highlights for me was the food at Casa Juancho in "Little Havanna". The entire trip was fantastic and WFU fans seemed to be much more vocal in the stadium.
The main thing was that Wake Forest finally got the national recognition for being a "class act". Thank you Coach Grobe for a wonderful year!

On topic: we North Carolineans should be proud that we would not ratify the Constitution until the Bill of Rights was included. We don't need a special holiday to celebrate it, however; we just need to be sure to protect it from foes from within (not naming names, but the supporters of the guilty will probably squawk) and without.
On secondary topic: I thought the tournament started on Thursday at 11:00 a.m., per http://www.theacc.com/sports/w-baskbl/acc-wtournament-central-2007.html Oh, you meant the other ACC basketball tournament, didn't you? :D
