United States allows plenty of free speech
There can be no doubt about the exercise of free speech in this fair land. Note these words about our president and vice president in Maureen Dowd's column in the News & Record on Jan. 30:
"Has anyone in the history of the United States ever been so singularly wrong and misguided about such phenomenally important events and continued to insist he's right in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary? ... It is W. and Vice who learned no lessons from Vietnam, probably because they worked so hard to avoid going ... They are consumed by the fear of looking as if they don't have guts, when they should be compelled by the desire to look as if they have brains."
In many countries, those statements would land you in prison or worse. Long live the United States of America.

Right on. What's funny is that some- even on this board!- would suggest that the author was guilty of treason and should be punished as such.
Wait- that's actually rather sad.

lil, your comments are a source of great puzzlement. What the heck does this one mean?
I say right on, Maureen. What is not true about her statement??? Nothing, absolutely nothing.

I do not agree with Dowd's assessment entirely, but I will defend her right to say what she feels. Lord knows I surely say what I think and often offend people with my caustic bluntness, but I do have that right in this great country. And so do ALL OF YOU! so don't knock it please.

Got no problem with Maureen's constant criticism of Bush. If that's her opinion, she should be free to say it or write it or whatever.
Of course, I'm also free to say that I think Maureen is full of crap on a lot of issues.

On a related note, fellow relentless Bush-basher Molly Ivins died last week from breast cancer. She was a gutsy writer who wasn't afraid to tell it as she saw it, and I think the world is a sadder place without her. I know a lot of you disliked her and disagreed with her views, but she was passionate in her beliefs. Neocon et al., please keep the negative comments to her views, not to her as a human being.

I have said nothing concerning Molly Ivins, Ms. BB.
May peace be with her.

I thought this was a fascist dictatorship! Some fascist, Bush. Loses Congress through an election and can't even muzzle Maureen Dowd. Pathetic.
Letters like this one are, I suppose, occasionally necessary to remind us how many civil liberties we do enjoy, irrespective of leftist hyperventilation to the contrary.

I thought Molly Irvins was hilarious, and her long standing Texas home-land gave her a deep knowledge of the Bush Dynasty. Yea, she picked on them - but usually it was well deserved critisizm and often it was funny as hell.
In later years, she seemed more caustic. I once thought it was just anger at how these folks kept getting away with stuff .. maybe that was the reason - but maybe cancer changed her a bit.
I also read Maureen Dowd this week - she had NO KIND WORDS for Hillary ..
