Episcopal priest forgets message of the Gospels

If the Episcopal priest would believe the Bible he supposedly preaches from, he would not be apologizing for the "arrogance and narcissism of cultural Christianity" (Counterpoint, March 22).

There is faith and morality in the religions Randall Keeney mentions, but no salvation. Love and respect for everyone is not an excuse to ignore the Christian's responsibility to sow the seeds of Christ's Gospel.

How can a "minister" of Christ teach all paths as equal? If all roads lead to heaven, Jesus was a liar.

America became great with a Christian foundation; let it erode and see where that path leads.

what's one little lie? are you really going to need to start taking anti-depressants just because there is a muslim road to heaven that actually exists?

Remains to be seen, bucky.

I remember an old saying that goes a little like this:

"If the Christian is wrong and you're right, nothing is what he's lost and you've gained. If the Christian is right and you're wrong, everything is what he's gained and you've lost"

It's another muffed version of Pascal's Wager, np, and it really says more about Pascal's concept of divinity than anything else. His god would be satisfied with fawning acceptance, no matter how insincere. What's lost is time, money, effort, integrity, honor, and humanity.
We've read this letter before. It was small-minded and bigoted two weeks ago, and it doesn't get better with repetition. Salvation from what? Road to what heaven where?
America became as great as it has by ignoring every moral value Jesus taught. Whether we stay great depends on so much more and less than having a "Christian foundation."
The editors must have spent so much time over that "CATASTROPHE" crap last week that they didn't proof enough new letters to run on Monday.

Let me get this correct, "Love and respect for everyone is not an excuse to ignore the Christian's responsibility to sow the seeds of Christ's Gospel."

So what are the "seeds of Christ's Gospel [good news)?" From my understanding and comprehension of my theological training, the seeds are that God loves ALL humanity because God created ALL humanity and desires for ALL humanity to be with God. If one reads the Christian Scripture Gospels, then it appears that ALL humanity WILL spend eternity with God because of that all encompassing love that God has for ALL humanity.

I believe that far, far too many people walk into a place of worship from week to week as brainless beings, subjagating themselves to whatever is spoken by the person "in charge." If people would begin to read and investigate on their own, maybe there would not be the debates taking place now that we have.

Remember, it was the Catholic Church that sought to keep the masses from reading the Bible because they knew of the ramifications of such an act. Look at what has happened due to that; i.e. the Protestant Reformation. Things spiraled from that point forward.

Keep the people dumb and the people can be controlled. When the people get educated, problems arise. Sound familiar in Guilford County?

Darrly, you were going along so well until you got to the Roman Catholic Church. While I'm obviously no great friend of any religious sect, the reason you suggest is not the reason the RCC gave for not encouraging the masses to read the bible for themselves, and I have serious doubts that Luther and Calvin were any more open-minded about the ramifications of that subject than the popes of Rome (or that French city I can't spell) had been, and they certainly weren't advocates for a liberal education.
If we don't accept the reason the RCC gave, to avoid theological errors and thus risk inadvertently losing souls to damnation, then we run into all sorts of real vs imagined vs concealed intent issues that apply to all sects on some theological point or other. i.e., it's hard to put the "errors" of one sect front and center without subjecting the "errors" of all sects to the same scrutiny.
I just think you might want to reconsider or rephrase that one paragraph. Catholics aren't the only sect that enforces "mystery, myth, and authority."

Darryl [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

2fer, I will not disagree regarding sects enforcing "mystery, myth, and authority." I used the RCC because the time period for which I reference that group, it was the "main" church in existence. Maybe I could have stated what I did in a better form. That is hindsight at this point. I will leave it as is and leave it to the reader to gleen the intended context. I believe (hopefully correct) that you have done so for the most part.

Shalom

Just as I figured... every time the word "Christianity" is mentioned... The Pagans start ranting.. [it never fails]

With compassion, please Let me correct you Darryl.. The Bible never, never says that God loves all humanity... [check with Esau about that..]

2fer... I can't understand how you can think, that just because you don't have a 'blue widget' then nobody can have one.. in fact ..'blue widgets' can't even exist !![now that what I call intelligent reasoning]..
If you had just considered the simple reasoning from the original post about this matter, instead of quoting abstract philosophies [that are excuses for incomphrension,] then maybe you wouldn't be so negative and out of touch with reality..
My GOD is great, sorry about yours...

2fer [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Well, Leber, you're surely the one to let us know what intelligent reasoning is - by example.
You can have all the widgets you desire, Leber, they come in all colors, unless they don't exist, in which case they come in even more colors. It's your god that's always a day late and a dollar short, not mine.
Please let me know when you find a concrete philosophy, though it could just be your theology that's set in stone. Such wisdom overwhelms me.
