City leaders shunned an inconvenient truth

In response to Philip Johnson's letter ("Truth Commission: It's over and done; let it go," April 24):

He said former Truth Commissioner Bob Peters' letter of April 11 was self-serving. On the contrary, Mr. Peters' time spent serving the city's citizens on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission gave him the basis from which to speak, not to glorify himself.

The tragedy of Nov. 3, 1979, could have been prevented. The Communist Workers Party had a lawful parade permit.

The plans of the Klan to arrive to antagonize them were known by the Greensboro police because of an informant. The duty of the police is to protect all citizens in the community.

Why weren't they there to carry out their sworn duty?

Our "influential leaders" preferred not to endorse the commission. Why?

Isn't the whole truth better than an incomplete and inaccurate truth?

Barbara P. Walker
Greensboro

The writer was a member of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

I was working at Revolution Mills during that time and the CWP would pass out flyers to the people leaving at the end of the work day. One thing I remember reading in those flyers but never heard reported anywhere was the fact that the CWP wanted the Klan to show up that day. In fact they dared them to show up. What I'm saying here is everyone knew the Klan would be there that day and the CWP wanted the Klan there. I have always wondered why that fact was never reported. All the news reports made it sound as if the Klan showed up unexpectedly out of the blue. You're right Barbara, the whole truth is much better than an incomplete truth.

snake, I thought the theme for the rally was "Death to the Klan". I thought it was obvious they wanted the Klan to show up.

"Our "influential leaders" preferred not to endorse the commission. Why?"

Because they have half a brain not to get involved with a group obsessed with digging up an event that happened over a quarter century ago.

Are you living under a rock Barbara?

Where did the money come from to fund this project?

Did you have subpoena power?

Was the main perpetrator the nucleus for the project?

Dan,
Once again, you show your ignorance of the topic.
As I have said on many posts here, the TRC suceeded in obtaining the "Truth" part, but it's the "Reconciliation" that seems to be missing here.

"Death to the Klan" rally is like "Partial Birth Abortion"---it's a made up term by a group of people wanting to advance a cause.

As to why the "influential leaders" did not embrace the findings--smart guy, you should know by now, it is a lose/lose proposition.

Suggest you read more and dedicate less time to digging up "conspiracy theories" debunking global warming! LOL!

To refresh my memory about the TRC issues, I googled "Death, Klan, Rally, Greensboro". The second link listed was this blogsite related to a letter to the editor dated 3/29/05, about the same issues by some of the same bloggers. This poor horse has been beaten way past dead.

Just to beat it a little more, I will say that I don't think the CWP expected or wanted a shootout, but they certainly pushed for a confrontation. As far as fault, I first blame the KKK who I think did come for a shootout, then the CWP. I think the police and city made mistakes but they were not the cause of the tragedy. From what little I read, the TRC Report attributed little blame on the CWP and most on the cops. I don't believe I could support such a conclusion.

When you start with an agenda, LastVOR, your conclusion will more than likely support your original agenda. Such was the case with TRC, imho.

THE LIBERAL CONSERVATIVE [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Like I've said, the TRC got to the "TRUTH" part, but the "Reconciliation" is just nowhere to be found--at least not that I've seen.

The truth part, as stated in their report, details just about everything that could be written. Some who comment, have never tried to READ any of it, they just like to comment. Key word here is READ. You can draw your own conclusions.

CWP were armed- I would be darned surprised if they didn't expect a shootout.
As I lay my cat-o-nine-tails upon the poor equus, I have just a brief anecdote-
I was sitting in a second floor classroom at UNC-G sometime before the fracas occured, when in burst a (for lack of a better term) gaggle of unkempt youts shouting in (an attempt at) unison something or another about "throwing off the yolk of profession (I couldn't quite decipher the chant). For some reason (I suppose years of practice standing at attention whenever an unknown variable entered the room) I stood up beside my desk, just as three of the interlopers were dashing down my aisle. In an almost comedic style, the first one stopped short and the other two colidded with the sternmost parts of number one. The first one shoved a green mimeographed (remember those) flyer at me, and eased by me and left.
This was no heroic gesture on my part, just rote habit.
Anyway, the flyer was from a group called the Workers Viewpoint Organization.
This was approximately three years after three other students (that I knew of) that were at UNC-G and myself had left the military after fighting communists overseas. The history of the era has been totally ignored by those seeking "truth" as well as those who sought martyrdom that day. This does not exonerate those who were responsible, but it may explain to those who are too young to know what the political climate was then. History is a backdrop conveniently ignored by revisionists.

OK - I went to the TRC Report and read the Executive Summary of the Report to draw my own conclusions, as suggested. The summary is 54 pages long and it's pretty easy to see by just the summary that the report is extremely slanted. Even with the facts spun it is still difficult to make them support the conclusions reached. I too, reccommend reading this much of the report to reach a first hand conclusion. I also noticed that most of the conclusions were based on the opinions of a majority of the appointed commission menbers. There is no indication what the opinions were of the minority.

LastVOR,
Now you and I are the ONLY ones who have read the transcript. While some conclusions are based on opinion, the meat is still in there.
What frosts me, are folks who post here, and have preconceived notions about race, etc speaking definitively about the TRC. They have no clue, other than they think they are paying for it, or "Ricky Bob" or "Dickey Don" told them what to think.

W.J.,
It's just that we all grow tired of comments from Dan et al, with no real knowledge of the subject at hand, just a narcississtic motion. Pitiful.
