Looking for meaning
As a student at one of our fine local colleges, I have recently partaken of an opportunity to view, at no charge, a tragic movie. It was about a washed-up politician trying to maintain his legacy, stay in the spotlight and find the meaning in life. The name of the movie? "An inconvenient Truth."

Neo this just proves the LIEberal institution a.k.a. the American College can still turn out Conservative Ideologues!
Posted on May 2, 2007 6:39 AM
You can try to teach them, but you can't make them learn. I wonder if this guy spends his time in college getting drunk and watching strippers?
Posted on May 2, 2007 6:44 AM
No, this just proves that the the LIEberal institution - a.k.a. the American College, is encouraging students to go see algore's 'oscar winning' propaganda film by offering them "free" admittance in an attempt to get their minds right.
Good lte, Guy.
BTW, the polar caps are melting on mars due to the sun making it warmer there. Could there be a lesson hidden in that fact about our own planet?...Nah, no one on mars to purchase algore's carbon credits.

All you Al Gore fans read about the new light bulbs. Most likely not, they are loaded with mercury. They have more warnings on them, than cat got mewows. Hear the story about the lady that dropped one, her house had 6 times the safe mercury level. Clean up cost over $2000. Yes there is gobal warming, but our cures may be worst that the problem. Save engery? ask the people of Danville,Va. They are faced with a 18% increase in their bill. Reason to load of demand for energy. Of courde hell will freeze over before you hear this in the liberal press.

I've also read that the Toyota Prius is bad for the environment in that more heavy metals have to be mined an processed for the batteries it uses.
I just booked a flight on travelocity.com this week. I received an email from them offering the sale of carbon offsets to relieve the guilt from my trip. No kidding:
http://activities.travelocity.com/nexres/activities/detail.cgi?src=10010405&ses=0b86881a553285c4b34b58b5a2b6cca58348&airport_code=HNL&city=Honolulu&actType=special&supplier_id=22105&low_price=10.00?WA1=02051&WA2=170405/01/2007%2012:00AM&WA6=2
Every penny of your donation goes directly to Go Zero Travel, the first program of its kind in the nation. A contribution of:
$10 offsets an average trip including air travel, a one-night hotel stay, and rental car for one person
$25 negates air travel, four-night hotel stay, and rental car for two people
$40 equalizes the effects of air travel, four-night hotel stay, and rental car for four people
That's equivalent of slipping my priest some $$ to absolve my sins with the intention of sinning more.
Corporations are learning to make money off the duped, guilt ridden populace.
Good letter guy, I'm glad to see a young person not swallowing algores propaganda.

I've read the IPCC report. Even they use the term "very likely". What happened to the "consensus"?

doggie:
I would not call this definitive, but regardless:
"All compact fluorescents contain trace amounts of mercury .. CF bulbs actually prevent more mercury from being released into the air by power plants [which] emit about 10 mg of mercury to produce the electricity needed to run an incandescent bulb, compared to only [5 per the EPA] to run a CF bulb for the same amount of time.
"Should a bulb break, take these simple precautions. First, open nearby windows to disperse any vapor that may escape. Sweep up the fragments (do not use your hands) and wipe the area with a disposable paper towel to pick up all glass fragments. Do not use a vacuum. Place all fragments in a sealed plastic bag and follow the disposal instructions below.
"Recycling burned-out CFs is the best option."

The EPA sends you here:
http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=cfls.pr_cfls
and here
http://www.energystar.gov/ia/partners/promotions/change_light/downloads/Fact_Sheet_Mercury.pdf

My thoughts: If you recycle the bulbs, the element is contained, recovered, reused, and lasts forever. If you burn coal to power an incandesent - the merecury is spit into the air for all to breath .. mm mm good.
Posted on May 2, 2007 9:42 AM
JDR, I looked at the site you referenced, found this interesting:
What should I do with burned out bulbs?
Recycling burned-out CFs is the best option. To find out if there are recycling options near you, call 1-800-CLEAN-UP for an automated hotline or visit earth911.org. (At the top of the earth911.org home page, enter your zip code and press "go." Click on the "Household Hazardous Waste" link, then the "fluorescent bulbs" link. This page will identify the nearest mercury recycling or disposal facilities near you. If the page contains no specific information on CFs, go back and click on the link for "Mercury Containing Items.")
I then went to earth911.org. and clicked on CF bulbs. Closest municipal site is in Charlotte but a commercial site in Burlington.
http://northcarolina.earth911.org/usa/master.asp?newpostal=27410&s=ls&serviceid=116&type=-1&cat=9
So if I live in Lexington I would have to DRIVE to Burlington or CLT to recycle my CF bulbs. We all know what driving does to the environment.

.. just had a thought:
Why have all the CAPITALISTS in this blog .. sudden become LONG HAIRED Hippy ENVIRONMENTALISTS .. worried about a little mercury?
Am I missing something .. or is there great Irony there?

Letting you know in advance, Jack, the following is not a joke but an imagined response:
"It's not Irony, JDR, just documentation of the absolute BS that currently fills the world."
Posted on May 2, 2007 10:57 AM
Duuuuude, the mercury....it's like, really bad for, like, the trees and stuff.
Lets just go back to my VW van, smoke some bud, listen to freedom rock and talk about The Man, LBJ's war, and how to, like, keep mercury from, like, killing trees and fishes and stuff. After than, we can totally check our NASDAQ portfolios.

Corporations give money to organizations that serve their interests, amazing.
Don't have any CF's yet JDR, I'll buy some only if they make economical sense. Of course bans on incandescent light bulbs are coming soon, Canada & Australia already have banned them.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070425/sc_nm/lightbulbs_env_dc
I hear the CF bulbs won't fit a lot of lamps and you will either have to buy adapters or throw out the lamps, adding to landfill space. Law of unintended consequences.
Kinda reminds me of low flow toilets. I have three of those damn things and if you put more than 3 squares of toilet paper in them they clog up. After a BM, I put a small amount of paper in them, flush, continue to clean up with more paper, flush again, sometimes up to 3 flushes. So they use more water than a 1 flush, high flow toilet. Law of unintended consequences.
I'll be sure to stock up on incandescent bulbs before they are banned. There will certainly be a black market for them like there is for high flow toilets.
Posted on May 2, 2007 11:10 AM
"Corporations give money to organizations that serve their interests ..."
No problem.
People accept at face value that which Corporations have pay organizations to say. Now THAT IS amazing.
Posted on May 2, 2007 11:25 AM
I thnk my bottom line comes from knowing that the resources on the earth are finite .. there can be no dispute. Another undisputable fact is that the current Burn Rate for resources is way too high to be sustainable.
Sure we can develop alternatives, and often they are better .. candles vs. incandesent for example, incandesent vs. CF's for another example (wink) .. but they are NOT always better. Do you really prefer formica to real wood?
I'll never get why those who call themselves "conservatives" as so ready to piss it all away.

THANKS for the letting me know in advance, James D. Rockefeller. But you FORGOT to warn about the JOKE just above the imagined response ....
You know ... the 10:48 AM post where you CLAIMED that you had ".. just had a thought:"
THAT was a real KNEE-SLAPPER, James D. Rockefeller. Now, you promised to warn me before you attempted humor, so you need to be a bit more conscientious about it than you are about "spelin, gramer, arthmetic" and other details, James D. Rockefeller.

no promises. I'll leave missspeels and such in just so you can read 'em and weep. That was another joke.
... and if you think my having an original thought is funny, then look in a mirror for a real laugh: the joke-of-a-man who's only apparent skill is throwing petty insults. That was not a joke.

"Why have all the CAPITALISTS in this blog .. sudden become LONG HAIRED Hippy ENVIRONMENTALISTS .. worried about a little mercury?"
And seemingly against money-saving measures.. I don't get it either.
By the way, there's nothing wrong with a little mercury. That's what gives tuna its zesty flavor!
Posted on May 2, 2007 2:38 PM
I'm certainly not worried about mercury. I used to break open thermometers to play with the stuff. No long term effects, except that I break out in hives when I hear Al Gore droning on about whatever is he talks about. But that may have happened anyway.
Flourescent light bulbs suck not because of the mercury, but because they give off crappy flourescent light. Pay a little extra for the good stuff from real incandescent bulbs. You'll be glad you did.
Posted on May 2, 2007 3:07 PM
Well I did it JDR. Just got back from Lowes to purchase a broken handle on my cheap, low flow toilet and there they were up front. CF light bulbs. 4 for $11.00. I bought a pack just out of curiosity just to see how they perform.
"I'll never get why those who call themselves "conservatives" as so ready to piss it all away."
I think you are mistaken. I like to save money and resources just like anyone else. I just don't want the govt. mandating what kind of toilet or lightbulbs I must buy.
Posted on May 2, 2007 3:17 PM
"and if you think my having an original thought is funny, then look in a mirror for a real laugh: the joke-of-a-man who's only apparent skill is throwing petty insults." - James D. Rockefeller
"... look in a mirror for ...." Did you think that one up ALL BY YOURSELF, James D. Rockefeller? Wow. You certainly have a wicked and piercing way with words ... I haven't been so taken aback since I was in grammar* school. What an original ZINGER!
"... the joke-of-a-man who's only apparent skill is throwing petty insults."
I must acknowledge YOUR capability on that point only, James D. Rockefeller. By the very words you just used here, you have demonstrated your consummate innate talent for pettiness. But this PARTICULAR effort was rather pathetic ... not up to your usual high standard. You are capable of such COLOSSAL pettiness, I hate to see you shoot your wad so cheaply.

Dan,
It's hard to take your link seriously when it has a "Jihad Watch" and "Horowitz" as tabs! My gosh, why don't you just cite "Pat's Perspective", the newsletter of Pat Robertson, or maybe even Rush Limbaugh's newsletter. Seems you and MEOW are feeding at the same trough! Do you also subscribe to the grocery store tabloids?
POINT: Use Mainstream or at least some source that actually has college educated writers. Guess pump jockeys like MEOW just eat those conspiracy rags up with a spoon.

John Larsh aka.Jack Armstrong,
THE FOLLOWING IS A JOKE:

Mechanic: Looks like you've blown a seal.
Armstrong: No. I just spilled ice cream on my shirt.
Posted on May 2, 2007 8:52 PM
That's really pretty sad, THE LIBERAL CON, coming from a miscreant who was just touting "college educated writers."
But then, you never DID actually claim or establish any sort of higher education bona fides for yourself when challenged on it, did you? Just an obsequious fan or a very low-level employee Demon Deacon wannabe, huh?
So what are we to expect from you ... slovenly and vulgar attempts at levity? I suppose so. I must say, your anemic attempt above WELL befits the overall image of your character.
Posted on May 2, 2007 9:40 PM
Jack, Demon deacon is basically a ******* hence the reason he changed his name. I cited an earth911 site and a yahoo cite. Whopdeedo.
If I spouted off such BS I would change my name too.
Here is a classic demon deacon quote:

If you would READ more and listen to your right wing radio less, you would at least "come off to the general public" as being more intelligent.
Posted by: DemonDeacon at December 16, 2006 10:44 AM
Well, Dan, I guess it was good for you while it lasted. You could tether your life to the opinions of O'Reilly, Hannity, and Brit Hume. It might be tough sledding when they "retool" the news channel----you might actually have to think on your own!

You are part of the 21% and that is approximately one in five people. So I suggest you go to Fox News Channel or listen to Rush Limbaugh and you can hunker in the bunker with them. Keep in mind that harvesting then saving seeds for next year's crop is what farmers have done since 10,000 BC.

Don't worry Dan. It's time to step back and reexamine your beliefs on any given subject when the village idiot starts to agree with you.
Myself, I find it very hard to believe that WF would accept - much less graduate - an idiot of this magnitude. I think he/she is a phony. Plain and SIMPLE.
BTW, you left out my favorite (and quiet possibly the most telling) in your compilation of quotes:
"While visiting London and France, we sewed Canadian flag patches to our backpacks"...

"The archive is alive and well! Don't give me the BS about stalking you, I'm just documenting idiocy!!"
Dan, I will remind you that it takes precisely two to tango, unless you're into that freaky stuff. :)

Denz, every now and then I have to bring out the archive. Demon Deacon can change names but that doesn't change the person.
To quote your apt words: "Damn. Grow up." I wish it would happen.

Poor Guy! If you would rather take an important issue such as our environment and buy into all the extreme political and cultural spin either way(rather than learning about and balancing all of the facts)...then so be it. After all, it is going to be your world and environment to deal with in the future.
And to the rest of you bloggers, I kind of feel like I am watching a 3rd grade play ground!
Posted on May 3, 2007 11:59 AM
Denz,
Danny and his compadre, MEOW, are two of a kind, living in a black and white world.
Check out the links they give to back up their warped thinking---they make John Birch Society look mainstream!
There's still hope for Danny, as evidenced by his thought processes and his reading list. Stalking tactics show his aversion to educated discourse. Meow is just so far over the edge that he can't return to this century.
Posted on May 3, 2007 12:00 PM
Demon Deacon, your constant insults reveal your aversion to educated discourse. The track record is a mile long as referenced in my 10:08 post. Try something new for me please, attempt a post without personal attacks and insults and stick with an issue. You can do it.
Posted on May 3, 2007 2:57 PM
Danny boy,
You are a riot! Go up a few posts and see the pablum you've spouted, then get back to me--oh great pious one. You are the 3rd grader with a lot of class...all of it third too.
READ MORE and ditch your buddy "MEOW" and you'll be taken more seriously.
Posted on May 3, 2007 3:25 PM
Don't comment much here anymore, but I have an observation.
The n-r blog does resemble a 3rd grade schoolyard with one bully that is constant and relentless with the insults in his quest for attention.
He apparently has nothing of value to offer in the arena of civil discourse so he seeks to make himself heard by loud and boisterous insults sprinkled with hyena-ish 'LOLs' aimed at anyone who is to the right of Ted Kennedy or Howard Dean.
I'm no expert on human nature, but my job requires that I deal with a great number of people on any given day, and if I have learned anything in 30 years of dealing with what represents a diverse cross section of society, it is this: It is almost universal that those individuals who display such contempt and are willing to insult and belittle those with whom they disagree with on a daily basis are without exception the most insecure and lacking in depth than are the ones he/she attempts to lampoon.
Anyone with half a brain - nay, anyone with ANY brain at all - can review the threads in this blog and tell who is speaking from personal experience, has been exposed to life's lessons, and is comfortable in their own skin... as opposed to those who find it necessary to insult and dish out the teenage chat room "LOLs" in order to try and prop up a point(s) gleaned from the left wing websites and Keith Olbermann.
Carry on Dan. I enjoy reading your adult points of view.
Posted on May 3, 2007 7:00 PM
Gee, I wonder who Jonniebgoode could be talking about?
Canadian wannabee wuss, perhaps you could benefit from a session with Dr. Phil? I think he treats obsession, doesn't he? It seems impossible to read a single post by you that doesn't have my name mentioned.
Even when insulting Dan, I somehow seem to manage to make my way to your fingertips...this is not a good sign.
Not that I'm intimidated by the 3rd grade level bully tactics, but this can't be healthy to your psyche. I'm flattered that I'm on your mind day and night, but you might as well know now...it will lead nowhere. You're definitely not my type. Although that Canadian flag episode revealed a feminine side of you I never knew existed, you're far too unstable...mentally of course, for me.
BTW, if you do make book on Dr. Phil, let me know when, will ya? I'll tape it.
Posted on May 3, 2007 10:14 PM

"The n-r blog does resemble a 3rd grade schoolyard with one bully that is constant and relentless with the insults in his quest for attention."
Since this thread's discussion has swerved wildly off-topic, here's my $0.02:
While neo, Dan, and Jonnie have a valid point, I will remind all of you that, by reacting and responding, you perpetuate the problem. Don't be dragged down into the same behavior.
Again, it takes two to tango, and some here (not gonna name names, so Dan and neocon- you're off the hook) fall for it every time. I mean really, guys, it's not that hard to ignore the boneheads. I suggest you do so.
