Looking in the mirror
To folks complaining about high gasoline prices, don't blame Exxon, Shell, BP or the local gasoline retailer. They furnish the fuel. You burn the fuel. It's called supply and demand.
Who is to blame? Look in the mirror. Soccer moms sit in big SUVs with engines and air conditioners running while watching their children. Drivers wait in line and idle engines at drive-throughs. Park and walk in. It might do you good. Try driving the speed limit, not 10-15 mph over.
You have choices. Complaints without action won't solve anything.

Don't forget the federal & state govts., who confiscate 50-60 cents a gallon in most states. They make much more profit on a gallon than the eeeeevvvviiiillll oil companies and don't have to do any of the work to drill, refine, transport and sell.

repeating myself, .. but I don't care about the 50 to 60 cent tax as long as it's spent well on things we agree are needed .. like efficient and safe transportaion systems including roads and bridges.

JDR, I'm not calling for the tax to be eliminated entirely, but people seem to blame the oil companies for making 8 cents on a gallon and never consider where most of the profits go: govt. coffers.
Couldn't the govt. help us all out and reduce the tax a bit? Wait a minute, govt. reduce taxes.....naaahhh.
Can you tell me for sure that the money is being well spent?

p.s.: and when the efficient and safe transportation systems are built - refund any left overs.

Don't look in the mirror, Jerry. Look at the environmental wackos and their cohorts in congress who oppose domestic exploration and drilling for fear of upsetting some damn bug or bird somewhere.

you mean those record profits that the oil comapnies have been posting over the last year really arent profits???
Posted on June 1, 2007 6:36 AM
Oh brother! When gasoline goes up, the gas guzzling SUV owners want to cut taxes that go to road maintenance and construction. What a bunch of spoiled brats. Belly up to the bar, suck it up or sell your gas guzzler.
Irony is, that the mentality of the SUV fanatic is what got us into the dependence on "CHEAP" fuel. Now they see it's not so cheap and they want everyone else to suffer. What aren't we surprised?
I personally wish we could stop ALL foreign oil imports today, take the shock to the system and tell the Arabs to suck sand!

TLC, thanks for those words. JDR, thanks for the reasoning as well. mikeg, I am in agreement with you! What were those "record profits" if not profit? It does not seem the taxes were so terrible.
And I believe it was in the NC budget passed by the State Senate to permanently cap the State gas tax at the 29 cent range. That seem counterproductive to me as prices are continually on the rise for all things. It just seems that gasoline/fuel fluctuates more than most other items on the market.
As a whole, we the people need to reduce our consumption and force the suppliers to reduce their prices. With the "record profits" reported, something seems really amiss when people say that there is nothing wrong with the high price of gasoline/fue.

Mikeg,
Big profits and small profit margins.
A comparison of margins from some major industries:
Pharmaceuticals and Biotec- 19%
Banks and Financial- 13-18%
Software Services- 10%
Telecom_ 9%
Food and beverage 8%
Oil and gas 8%
Any discussion of excessive profit has to be balanced with the R&D vs. volume of sales to determine if there are indeed obscene profits.
I think Pharmaceuticals is the best target on this issue.

The whole way that gasoline is valued and priced is screwed up. Refineries can't be built because the incentive is to not build them, thus keeping gasoline prices high?
I agree with Darryl and TLC on this one.
I know people who just last week went out and bought a gas-guzzler? What is it going to take?
And these folks aren't rich. It just makes me wonder how high gas is going to go before people start taking things seriously. For me, it reached that point at $2 a gallon. At $3 a gallon, it's push the red panic button time. I would not even CONSIDER buying a vehicle that got less than 25 mpg right now. Right now what I have gets about 22 mpg and 26 mpg. I wasn't really a gas guzzler BEFORE gas went up.
For folks with large families, they don't have a whole lot of options. For the majority of us, however, the gas guzzlers as much as the oil companies and government deserve our contempt.

STRICTLY FROM AN ECONOMIC POINT OF VIEW:
I will add, that "false economy" also exists when the owner of a gas guzzler that is paid for, goes out, gets in debt for a car that is more efficient. That person would be well advised to keep the guzzler and drive less.
As to the "arrogance" posted here by the ones who "CHOOSE" to drive SUV's, I say "Go to it boys"! Just don't think I'm gonna bite for the old "let's drill in ANWR" routine.
Dan is quick to urge the government to come between a man and woman when it comes to abortion---wonder how he'd feel if the government told him he could not own an SUV? Oh, that's right! It's okay for the government to get involved in intimate family matters, but NOT okay to decide who can drive what vehicle. What was I thinking!

"Dan is quick to urge the government to come between a man and woman when it comes to abortion---wonder how he'd feel if the government told him he could not own an SUV?"
Congratulations!!! Stupid statement of the week. Compare sucking an unborn child into a sink to owning a SUV. Worthy of saving to the archives.
Despite that stupid statement I will agree on your first paragraph Liberal Demon Conservative Deacon. I just paid off my SUV and don't care to look at 4-5 years more payments on another more efficient vehicle just to save 5-6 mpg. Besides, my airplane is fairly fuel efficient despite aviation gas costing around $4.50/gallon.

Dan,
Too bad you can't see the bigger picture of how hypocritical you are in placing YOUR beliefs on everyone else.
Your keeping "archives" just shows how narcissistic you really are. Power seems to be quite the elixir for you, so I hope that hypocrisy thing doesn't ruin it all for you! LOL!
Don't go away, now. Without you and your friends who make up the 28%, we wouldn't have much to laugh at! ;)
Oh, by the way my cat brought me a rabbit fetus. Should I refer to him now as a "baby killer"? Let me know, because it's really bothering me.

Nah, just roast at 350 degrees, add a little garlic salt, drink with red wine and enjoy.

Whew! Glad I can let him outside again without fear that the "Right to Lifers" and their symbiotic bretheren in P.E.T.A. won't pick him up, and then sentence him to death!
Got to love the logic of the righteous.
fetus=life
criminal=death penalty
Lol!

Only you Liberal Demon Conservative Deacon can morph an LTE about the driving habits of Americans into abortion and the death penalty, especially using an analogy of abortion with driving SUVs.
Gotta love the logic of the illogical.
That 4:04 statement was a true classic, that is why is is worth saving. Still not as good as "tin horn flag waver", my all time favorite. See if you can top that one.

Dan,
Like I've said before, your narcissism is palpable. Glad you feel powerful with your ...what did you call it...YOUR ARCHIVE! You are a funny little man.
