Upcoming book will address online threats

In response to your editorial, "Keep online predators away from your kids" (May 25), may I call attention to a book being published on Aug. 14, and written by Susan Shankle and Barbara Melton, "What In The World Are Your Kids Doing Online?"

Susan is a graduate of Grimsley High School and Greensboro College. The book is a "how to" book for parents, to help them deal with cyberspace matters: the Internet, cell phones, text messaging, bullying, etc.

The changes in children's lives presented by electronics contain both blessings and pitfalls.

Parents need to take notice and this book can be very helpful. As you say,"The first line of defense continues to be parental involvement."

That begins with knowledge.

The writer is the mother of Susan Shankle.

A worthy effort, indeed.
I fear, however, that the book will be obsolete before it is published.
The rate of technological innovation is breathtaking. It is a parent's absolute responsibility to master current technologies and stay at least on an even keel with their children.
Perhaps a book such as this will give parents the impetus to open their eyes.
Do not let the government do your job for you.

Bill, I concur with you! Parents need to open their eyes. I believe that is part of what this LTTE writer is saying.

Take for instance the lead article in today's N & R regarding the former NASCAR publicist. Now this guy in his 40s convinced an 11yo to meet him for sex (via online venues). Now someone tell me how an 11yo CHILD was able to get away from home/school, etc. without anyone knowing her whereabouts? The parents need to be charged with aiding the deliquency of a minor! The defenent received his sentence, I doubt he will see "free air" for a quarter of a century. I also doubt that he will not care about getting near a computer anytime soon as well.

May all find grace for their needs in this situation.

Shalom

Thanks Mom!

buckyreeds, be nice to her!

Thanks for your comments about technology and its fast-moving development. Please know that we are aware of that fact and will have a website to update people on breaking news on this subject.

The book is all about ways for parents to monitor children's activities both on and off line. There is no substitute for parental involvement. Predators hate involved parents!

Thanks.
