Integrating students helps them learn better

The column by Charles Davenport, "Schools must return to basics to succeed" (June 24), left me questioning several of his points. Accusing public education of being a "failure by any objective standard" is a harsh statement. Further, criticism of Guilford County Schools' budget and their programs is not entirely substantiated.

When meaningfully analyzing Terry Grier's quote, "developing a culture where our employers identify with and understand the feelings of our students and parents and their colleagues," one relevant point needs to be established. Schools are expected to create positive learning environments where all stakeholders, from parents to employees, work toward a common goal. Without the right environment, learning is curtailed.

There is a need to integrate students from various income levels, cultures and backgrounds. Teachers don't control this variable. They adjust to it and accept it as a reality. GCS Connects is a program designed to promote trusting relationships. Students being suspended and repeatedly failing in school contribute to delinquency.

More value placed on programs designed to integrate and not isolate is to everyone's benefit. I firmly believe the majority of citizens value what teachers do to help students be successful.

Jennifer, I truly believe that if one examines the family infrastructure of "Students being suspended and repeatedly failing in school..." that the root of the problem would be found.

There needs to be some means to hold these deadbeat parents accountable for their lack of care/concern for their children.

Not disciplining the unruly student only hampers those students who are in school to learn. Not disciplining the unruly student only disciplines the student who has NOT been unruly. So, who loses in the long run?

I firmly believe that all of the silly EOG/EOC testing needs to be thrown out. Teaching a student to pass a test does not inhibit learning. How many students score excellent on an EOG/EOC and then bring home C's/D's on report cards? There is NO coorelation on scoring excellent on an EOG/EOC and a C/D in a subject. Yet, a teacher can earn a bonus if the school scores above a certain range on those EOG/EOC tests. I say forget those and go back to using the standard grades!

Yeah right. Don't sweat the small stuff like Math, Geography, and Algebra, just as long as the students are in tune to other's feeeeeelings.

The abyss is opening wide and the liberals are dragging our youth down with every 'program' they can hatch. No wonder other developed countries are leaving us in the dust.

neocon,
in other countries, parents respect teachers a little more than here. Students arent running around popping off teacher and holding then hostage...and teachers are trying to sleep with every student that comes through the door...I also don't think that parents are ashamed to take a belt to their child when they screw up in other countries either.

TLC,

Where is neocon wrong? Employers care more about a prospective employees skills and ability to do a job than they do about their feelings. They certainly don't hire unqualified people because of feelings.

And, he is right...we rank about 20th in the civilized world in our education achievement, but we probably spend more than any of the others. Why do think that employers are exporting significant amounts of technical work to other countries? It's because that's where the people with skills reside.

conundrum [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Mr. Samurai, you made several broad, unfair and false generalizations in your reply. The majority of parents in this country do respect teachers. The majority of students do not "pop off" to their teachers and the majority of teachers do not try to sleep with their students. You took a few newspaper headlines and you made them into these sweeping generalizations. Teachers are hard working educators. Stop asking them to be social workers and surrogate parents. They are there to teach children, not to raise them. And by the way, in case you have not noticed, your agreeing with Neocon is akin to Jesse Jackson agreeing with Rush Limbaugh. Neocon posted this on June 24th: "One can experience diversity there all right. One can experience what it is like to co-exist with animals." Who do you think he is referring to when he uses the word "animals?" I'll give you a clue. They look like you and me. He is just too afraid to come out and say it.

neocon [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Yeah, 6string you are a non conformist who speaks without the prior approval of Justice Jackson and his lemmings.

"One can experience what it is like to co-exist with animals."

This statement is 100% correct. Co-exist with animals that molest 14 year old kids and animals that have had no discipline at home, but are dumped into the public zoo system where they expect the almighty state to transform them into responsible adults.

It is you Mr./Ms. conundrum who takes his cues from the race baiters like Jackson and Julian Bond and sees discrimination around every corner and under every rock. Not I.

Tell me conundrum, do you feel the need for white liberals like THE LIBERAL CANADIAN to take up for you and stand between you and every obstacle you may encounter in your life...or are you capable of caring for you and yours, as I believe you are? I'm truly curious as to why some minorities create alliances with people who see them as so inept that they are incapable of taking care of themselves and require the services of unca ted et al.

conundrum: If you're looking for "broad, unfair and false generalizations" look no further than NeoCon. For Example:

"The abyss is opening wide and the liberals .. "

So 100% of the problem is "liberals"? Even in predominately Red States like North Carolina? Even in districts where board members are elected by the public .. not one "conservative" has contributed to "the abyss"?

ORR - Employers are exporting significant amounts of technical work to other countries primarily because it's cheaper. Show me otherwise - the only "otherwise response" is addressed by H-1B and L-1 Visas which bring those "skilled workers" here .. where they can be hired for less.

neocon [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Red state does not = conservative (sp?)

And before your pair of monkeys (TLCanadian & sweet pea) starts to ape you or bleat about Bush's 'no child left behind' let me say this needs to be flushed down the toilet right along with "developing a culture where our employers identify with and understand the feelings of our students and parents and their colleagues,".

I'm sure Digital Optics Corp. or BF Goodrich will require that their future employees be indoctrinated in the proper 'culture' first, then worry about whether they can read a blueprint or an electrical schematic later.

neocon [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

"Read a blueprint" hell...just being able to read the envelope it comes in is enough to get you into an "honor" class in the GCZ system.

Oak,
If you'll just ask the "neo-kitty" he'll tell you that his plan is to dissolve public education period. He offers no solution, but wants to set off an A-Bomb on ALL public education. The guy is an idiot!

Oh and btw, you'll notice THE LIBERAL COWARD never answered orr's question. That's because he himself is suckling off the public teat in some form and the truth is hard to swallow...even with that government milk. Much easier to squeak about 'a bombs' and 'rickshaws' instead of answering a direct question.

Too funny how neo accuses anyone who sees through his little girl rants,as someone who sucks off the government teat.

Yet he is the one who gets the military help for his home, his night school classes at a G.I. Diploma mill. Not to mention his counseling sessions for his PTSD! Too dang funny, neokitty. That's right, you're just a victim.

Excerpt:
The National Education Commission on Time and Learning found that most American students spend less than half their day actually studying academic subjects. The commission's two-year study found that American students spent only about 41 percent of the school day on basic academics. Their schedules jammed with course work in self-esteem, personal safety, AIDS education, family life, consumer training, driver's ed, holistic health, and gym, the typical American high school student spends only 1,460 hours on subjects like math, science, and history during their four years in high schools. Meanwhile, their counterparts in Japan will spend 3,170 hours on basic subjects, students in France will spend 3,280 on academics, while students in Germany will spend 3,528 hours studying such subjects - nearly three times the hours devoted in American schools.

I was paying my bill at the hotel in Arkansas, a friendly young woman, Jill, was settling the account. An older woman passed by and said hello to Jill. She told me the older woman was her history teacher.

I asked Jill if she attended public schools, she replied yes. I asked her what she learned in history, she said "things". I asked her when Arkansas was admitted to the union. No idea. Answer: 1836.

I decided to switch to more contemporary subjects. I asked Jill who the governor of Arkansas was. No idea. Senators? No idea. How many Senators does her state have? No idea.

I asked her why she was working a the Hampton Inn. Summer work after her freshman year in college. Good for her, making money.

Finally I asked her who won American Idol the last four years (decided not to go five). She reeled them off in perfect order.

From a college student. Just one example mind you, but anyone who can complete one year of college and not know how many senators her state has but knows the last four American Idol winners???? Scary.

nitpicker [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Check out greatschools.net.

All this "integration is good" sounds nice but the real way to know whether it is working is to check the numbers. In most cases, the higher the minority/free-lunch percentage, the lower the scores.

The key to fixing that is to understand why.

There are a few magnet schools where minority kids have succeeded. My guess is that it is because these kids have parents who are involved.

If you want to fix a problem, then find a solution that addresses it. However, shifting kids around solely based on their color is NOT a solution.

Take a look at schools with a high percentage of white kids. See the rating?

Now, show me where taking underperforming black kids and overperforming white kids and bussing them all over to hell and back has helped education.

How's that for broad generalizations?

Many people claim they support integration. I know I do. But most neighborhoods are heavily weighted towards one race. Most schools are as well. Here in Greensboro, there was even a black mall and a white mall for a while. And don't pretend that you didn't know.

Please. Just educate the kids. All of them.

THE LIBERAL CONSERVATIVE [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Nit,
You have taken the mantle from neoKitty and Dan!!

My children attended a school with ove 57% free and reduced lunch children. It was a "majority minority" school.....It also had some of the highest math scores in Guilford County! So you can put away your broad brush and stick to things you truly might know something about...like picking of nits..and in the case of neokitty & his trusty assistant, twits too.

Dan [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Nice smug response. Translation: my kid's school did well Nit, so therefore you don't know jack about education Nit, so shut up unless it's a subject you know something about.

Careful Nit, you might get on the bad side of Demon Deacon and you will be put on the daily "nit hit" list.

Folks, he's our little "narcissist". Keeps files on people, and now he's into translating other people's posts!

Concerned Parent [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

While I am in general sympathetic to integrating races and economic backgrounds in the schools, some of the other comments in the LTE demand a response. Could it not be that delinquency is the cause of suspensions and repeated failures in school? Without the right environment, learning is indeed curtailed. The right environment would mean a significant increase in the suspension rate, and a willingness to expel students at age 16 if they don't exert self-control. Some (many?) of them will wind up in jail, or perhaps politicians, and a few will wind up rich and famous. Guess what. That's real life. And nitpicker is right, there still is a black mall. It's called Four Seasons. And don't pretend that you didn't know.

We should ignore the noble thing to do and look at the facts. We should take decisions based on facts too.

The facts are that poor children at Grimsley are less likely to graduate High School than at Andrews of Dudley.

So, if you bus a poor kid into Grimsley who wins.
