More disclosure needed on military recruiting

The Peace and Social Concerns Committee of Friendship Friends Meeting concurs with the Parents and Citizens for Truth in Recruiting that high school students and parents need to be made more aware of their rights to withhold personal contact information from military recruiters.

A 30-day period after school starts is a short period to allow for such requests, especially when so few students and parents even know of the requirement in the No Child Left Behind Act.
At a minimum, students and parents should be notified immediately after school starts that their phone numbers and addresses will be made available to military recruiters unless the student or parent requests annually that this information be withheld. Also, the student should be given specific information on how to make such a request.

The commanding officer for recruiting in North Carolina says he is concerned that students will graduate from high school without knowing anything about the military. This seems unlikely when our society is permeated with such news regularly.

If it is becoming necessary to reach into such young ages, a better solution to the recruiting shortage would be to withdraw our troops from places where we are overcommitted.

Hey Marilyn, maybe you can get enough liberals to sign a petition and get an ordinance passed where people with young children will have to notified when one of these recruiter scoundrels move into the neighborhood?

I thought keeping the Government out of our lives was conservative bedrock.

It is.

Which only goes to show all this LIEberal / Conservative / Red / Blue / Purple shit is just that: a bunch of shit.

Carol Dunn [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Marilyn, your last sentence says it all. Sending teenagers to fight battles is ludicrous. We don't trust them to buy beer, but we willingly give them a loaded gun and send them to war. Take them into the military, train them until they are 21. Let them grow up before we send them to die. Makes more sense to me.

gaytony [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Recruiters have been coming to schools for as long as I can remember. This is nothing new. I remember taking the ASVAB test (for the military) in school my junior year. I declined taking it my senior year because I knew I wasn't joining the military.

The military offers some kids a great chance to better their lives. I see nothing wrong with the options being placed in front of a teen-ager. If he or she isn't interested- they simply say 'no thanks' when the recruiter calls.

ncpatriot [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Carol,
I almost agree with you. Perhaps they should send the older people to the military and leave the "youngsters" to sit at home and play video games and get fatter. We could send the older men but then they are much more out of shape and most are unable to bear the burden of long marches with full field packs. Perhpas we could find a new way to defend our country i.e. by sending out letters saying dont come here to do us harm.

I have lived my life and would gladly go back in and possibly save a kid. In my advanced age, I would think less of the political need to shoot and would shoot quickly and take the consequences. I would also shoot from a moving humvee but alas, we're not wanted.

I agree with gaytony who says the military gives many a chance that they wouldnt have otherwise to grow personally. There are some risk with all work we endeavor to do in life.

Bill O'rights [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Gaytony hit the nail squarely.
Until some future administration resurrects the draft, our youth have an option.
Teach your children your values, and they will choose appropriately, whether you believe in pacifism or peace through preparation.
If they choose otherwise, be thankful they think for themselves.

The ONLY reason teenagers are recruited is because when told to charge a nest of snipers, they will charge. Tell that to a 40 year old man with wife, kids, home and they'll go..."Nah. Let that kid do it".

NeoKitty says,
"Hey Marilyn, maybe you can get enough liberals to sign a petition and get an ordinance passed where people with young children will have to notified when one of these recruiter scoundrels move into the neighborhood?"

I say, not such a bad idea there, kitty. Not bad. :)

I agree that parents should be notified of decisions their children may make that could be life altering, joining the military or otherwise.

Congratulations, and although this may be premature, welcome back to the land of literacy!

Gay Tony: The question is not should recruiters be able to encourage kids to sign up - the question is this: Should your tax dollars be used to add paper-work to an already over-regulated school system requiring the School Admin' to provide the military with the name and home phone and address of every kid in their school?

NCP: Since raising the sign-up age from 35 to 43, the mil' is already welcoming fat and slow older folks.

NCP: A better way to defend the country would be to pick war's a lot more carefully.

Brian Harper [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

I agree with the letter. There should be an easily accessible "opt out" form.

I was a recruiter for 3 years. I was told by my zone supervisors that if a school didn't give me the list of names, numbers and addresses, that I was to threaten them with the No Child Left Behind Act. That they could in fact lose all federal funding (bs) if they didn't comply.

It was amazing, every school willingly gave me the lists with names, numbers (even non-published ones) and addresses. One school even gave me a list that included the students' social security numbers!

The military may be good for some, but parents should be made aware that they can opt out. That may keep the recruiters from calling.

If they are already calling, next time they call for Johnny, tell them he has moved to Maine with his dad, or that he is being heavily medicated for ADHD. Those are but a few reasons a recruiter will place your sons record in the inactive file.

What happened to that Republican mantra of "Keep Government Out of Our Lives"???

While neoKitty's out waxing the steps at the old folks home and yelling "fire", I think I'll go alert schools that they can urge parents to "Opt out" of giving recruiters their child's name.

guess not

neoKitty,
What exactly IS your problem? Were you abandoned as a child? Are you, like Dan, starved for attention? If so, then consider this your attention for the day...now just go away. (PLEASE!)

Am I to believe this comes from an adult? This is kindergarten stuff, dude. Your posts are not those of a fully grown man, but more on the level of a 7 year old.
Some of the tripe you come up with is what one would expect to read on a note the teacher intercepted in a 3rd grade class.

The things you say here makes very little sense. Usually just drool like the above examples or telling someone else you agree with what they say. You are a 'follower', incapable of independent thought. You and the other liberals may not like what I say, but at least they are my own thoughts and not echos of another.

Besides, If I just 'went away', no one here would give you the time of day, except for an occasional cheer from sweet pea...

Glad we agree Demon Deacon. Since we both agree that parents should be notified of life altering decisions their children make, I'm sure you would agree that parents should be notified if children in their custody choose to have an abortion. That was part of the "otherwise" in my statement.

Thanks for your agreement, glad we could see eye to eye on that one.
