Naming of new school was handled poorly

Shame on the Board of Education for not knowing its own rules and practices and subsequently creating the controversy surrounding the naming of the elementary school in Reedy Fork.

Shame on the board for criticizing citizens who showed up that night to speak.

And shame on everyone who was for or against the name solely because of race.

I am not surprised at the condition of Guilford County schools now that I have observed the condition of the Board of Education.

Ron McNair was born in Lake City, SC. He was not a NC or Guilford County native. I think the neighborhood where the school is located should choose the name.

I agree with Mr. Pond. I am ashamed of the members of the School Board who created this controversy. The issue was always about keeping our "community" school name. The people in the Reedy Fork area of Northeast Guilford County wanted the school to be named after the "community"---not after a person. The May 10 Project Team approved the Reedy Fork Elementary School name. Someone in the school system changed the findings of the May 10 meeting. On May 24, the BOE put up the name Ronald McNair Elementary School at Reedy Fork, and advised that the community had 21 days to change their mind. On June 28, many citizens of the Reedy Fork area of Northeast Guilford County attended the meeting and, again, requested we be able to keep the "community" school name that we had looked forward to for over four years. From the beginning, had the Board followed policy, there would never have been any controversy regarding the naming of this school. The man from the southeast district, along with the Board Members who created this controversy, should all be ashamed. On June 28, it was obvious that several members of the Board did not know their policy for naming schools. This is scary!

maybe this area is running out of heroes (my own personal heroes are ralph, owner of beef-burger and the late cordelia kelly).

had you seen mcnair's expression as he plummeted toward the atlantic, there would have been no doubt he deserved his name on something...

(and yes, the shuttle was intact as it went down...)

Bucky, you are showing your age...I also remember Cordelia Kelly. I think of her when I watch Rachel Ray...don't know why.

I agree that McNair was special. However, his ties to Guilford County are small. His name could go on a building at A&T if it hasn't already been done. His ties to an elementary school are nil.

speaking of age, there was a tv show in the late sixties that came on about 4:00 a.m. it was "black omnibus." it kept up with perspectives in the black community. i felt guilty if i didn't watch the whole show...

and whatever happened to dave plyler, steve campbell and libba hinkle? did the tsunami get 'em? what becomes of people like that?

i was watching dave plyler take questions on live tv one afternoon. a little white trash girl asked, "when will they stop letting niggers go to our school?" a red-faced dave handled it like a pro, but man did he love to hear himself talk...

Please stay on point. The topic is the school board policy for naming new schools.

Sorry, sis...guess you weren't around for Cordelia, the Old Rebel, and Howdy Doody. We old folks like to remember the good old days. We have already beaten the school naming issue to death, time for a break.
