Council should prohibit drivers using cell phones
I live at Well-Spring and always enjoy my News & Record every morning and look forward to the editorial pages.
I would like to say I do agree 100 percent with the letter, "Drivers with cell phones put others in danger" (July 26).
Since I can't drive anymore and am confined to a wheelchair most of my time, my son takes me out for a ride in town or out on the highway. Sometimes I am glad I don't drive like I used to. I have seen a lot of what the writer spoke of.
I, too, would like, if possible, for the City Council to help do something to keep people from talking on their cell phones while driving.
God help protect safe drivers.

Has Hilda noticed that some drivers run stop signs/lights, speed, don't wear seat belts and punch the gas when the light turns yellow. A law isn't going to stop people from using cell phones while driving.

Just what we need---one more law to tell us how to live our lives.

Next thing you know, they'll be trying to ban watching movies while driving.
What's wrong with these people?

No eating, drinking or blowing your nose while driving either.

It is not the city council's job to create laws. They can create a city ordinance, but those are not well enforced. And, every tourist can cry ignorance! I truly believe that cell phone use while driving is as bad as driving while drunk. I actually witnessed a fatal accident at an intersection in Durham. A young girl on a cell phone driving down a road approached a red light. I was already stopped in one of two lanes. The light was completely red at least 30 seconds before she got there. She went past me at 35 to 40 MPH inot the intersection, hit 2 people crossing in the crosswalk with the walk sign on. One died on impact and the other was seriously injured. The girl's car continued on and hit a delivery truck. The girl on the cell phone suffered serious injuries to her head where she held the phone. I'm the kind of person that will render aid at a scene until the professionals get there. Ironically, the injury to the girl was on the side of her head where she held the phone. And, the phone was smashed?? I left my name with the Durham police and the highway patrol as a potential witness. The moral of my statement is this. DRIVING A MOTOR VEHICLE IS FULL TIME!! When you divide your time, you become a danger to everyone around you. If you have your children in the car with you, is that phone call important enough for your children to die over? Just pull over and park to talk. The phone is ringing? Pull over and stop, then answer it. You can tell who called if they hang up first. Only a stupid, uncaring, mindless insecure lowlife (whewww!) talks and drives at the same time. Just like a drunk!! The Dog's outa here.
