Dole's vote and her election both mysteries
The following is a Counterpoint:
By Kenneth Trager
Whenever one moves from one part of the country to another, it is going to be an adjustment and learning process. The same is true when one moves from one part of a state to another or even one section of a county to another.
There has been one political constant regardless of where I have lived. Before I became a citizen of North Carolina, I could not understand how Elizabeth Dole was elected as one of North Carolina's U.S. senators. Since I have lived here for more than two years, I am still confused.
This confusion increased even more after reading the July 28 paper. What possible justification could the senator have in being one of eight U.S. Senators to vote against a bill to "... enact the unfulfilled recommendations made by the Sept. 11 Commission three years ago"?
It is beyond comprehension that someone who supposedly is concerned about national security and the welfare of her constituents would vote in the manner the senator did.
I would hope that the informed citizens of North Carolina would find a suitable candidate to oppose "our" do-nothing, know-nothing farce of a U. S. senator and replace her with someone who provides leadership and a concern for the safety of this nation.
I would also like to "commend" Rep. Howard Coble for his no vote in the House of Representatives.
Perhaps it is time for both folks to walk into the sunset of retirement and leave their positions of power to fresher minds with clearer understandings of what is best for our nation and our state.

I'm not sure which "unfilled recommendations" of the 9/11 Commission Senator Dole balked at supporting. I'm sure she and Representative Coble could supply good reasons.
But I do know that that Senator Dole was among the five or six senators who were most aggressive in burying the Bush-McCain-Kennedy-Reid amnesty legislation for illegal aliens. Had this legislation passed, it would have been a disaster for America and for North Carolina.
NumbersUSA is the broad-based lobbying organization most responsible for thwarting President Bush and and a great variety of open borders groups: La Raza, the ACLU, the Chamber of Commerce, and a great many other ethnocentic and business groups.
An affiliate of NumbersUSA, Americans for Better Immigration, keeps a detailed "Immigration Report Card" on ever members of Congress. Senator Dole's grade? A.
Representative Coble? A

A representative of the people should stand for the good of the people in all areas, not just one. While a vote against amnesty most assuredly IS for the good of NC and America it does not cancel out a bad vote for NC and America regarding other equally important issues. Consistently voting for the good of all citizens is the responsibility of elected representatives, not voting in a partisan manner.

Mr. Trager, in the past two senatorial elections, NCians had the opportunity to elect an outstanding person; Erskine Bowles. However, rather than voting for someone who would work FOR the people, party partisanship ruled and the Carpetbagger was elected in 2002. Then, to add insult to injury, Richard Burr was elected. It seems that NCians cannot win for losing!
Who will run to unseat the Carpetbagger? So far, that is an unanswered question. I can only hope that a viable candidate will be on the horizon. Otherwise, I will be forced to write in the name of a person.

ANYONE who supports Bush or Dole at this point, are only supporting them due to their political party.

Three things you can bet on and win every time. This tabloid will have republican bashing letter every day. You will never see a letter about whats going on in Raleigh. And the sun will come up in the east. They are very fair and blanced they never seen a republican that like and they have never seen a democrat, they do not love. Yvonne, do you think its possible for anyone to vote to please everyone? I like to see a few letters on Miller votes, and all the sweet land deals Easley has made for his family. Anyone that supports Easley and his thugs, do so because they are non thinking democrats. I am a democrat, however I am American first, so I do not trust any elected offical, I think 99.9 % of them are crooks.

Darryl,
Erskine Bowles is an idiot. He is about to tear the UNC system apart. If he can single handedly bring down a university system, I'm terrified at what he could do for our country.
Dole is a self-serving Washington elite who has lived off the gravy boat of politics all her life. I am glad she voted against immigration. However, I'm sure that was a politically calculated move that had more to do with re-election than any firm principles or convictions.
As far as her vote against implementing recommendations by the 9/11 commission, I can't tell you what she was voting against.
I'm not too crazy about national ID cards or armed government checkpoints throughout our country. That doesn't feel like America to me.
Let's repeat this slowly for our politicians who don't get it. Border security, border security, border security.

IDIOTIC POST OF THE WEEK:
"Erskine Bowles is an idiot. He is about to tear the UNC system apart. If he can single handedly bring down a university system, I'm terrified at what he could do for our country."
How about some facts to back up that statement???

Mr. Trager,
Why should you be surprised? This is the same state that sent The Breck Girl to DC for four years. We obviously have no ability to elect competent senators.

ORR,
While not commenting on your opinion of John Edwards - Senators are elected for 6 years.

Rufus,
Once again you prove liberals read, and conservatives say "ditto" on Rush Limbaugh. :)

Senators might be elected for 6 years, but I think ORR might be right in saying that Edwards served no more than 4. I'd guess less.
What proof would be enough for you, Demon Deacon? What evidence could I provide that would convince you? They say a picture is worth a thousand words. So here is a link to a picture that backs up the theory that Erskine Bowles is, in fact, an idiot. Should we even mention that the guy ran on an anti-gun platform in the State of NC? Stupid is as stupid does.

The truth wouldn't mean anything to you if you aren't knowledgable enough about it to tell if it is truly the truth or just my word. What media outlet would present it to you so that you would find it credible?
