Bush's Vietnam analogy just another deception

The News & Record editorial cartoon (Aug. 25) shows a caricature of President Bush saying, "If we leave now, Iraq will become just another Vietnam." The statement reminded me that when Bush addressed the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention a few days ago, he referred to the bloodshed and population displacement that occurred in Southeast Asia after the U.S. military left Vietnam. He argued that the military withdrawal was the cause of the carnage, and that leaving Iraq would cause a similar result.

I believe it would be more accurate to say the deaths that occurred after we left Vietnam were a direct result of the U.S. decision to intervene in that war. And the current Iraq disaster has one main cause: the U.S. invasion of that country.

American citizens should not buy the Bush big lie.

Interesting that many opposed to the Iraq War have for a while compared it to Vietnam - and comparison White House strongly rebuffed. Now that the President has FLIP-FLOPPED - the defeatocrates are denying the comparison.

Long Live The Cheney Gang !!

By that does he mean a country mired in civil war sustained by our intervention climbing out of the morass (albeit very messily) to become a stable nation state.

Perhaps Bush is right.

Too funny how the Bush/Cheney stickers have all but disappeared. In Irving Park most (demographic example of educated households) pulled them off just after Bush's response to Katrina. All you see now are the local GOP officers and a few hardcore pro-war folks.

It's also funny how people who supported Bush are now saying, "He's really as dumb as everyone said he was". A lady told me yesterday that she voted for Bush twice but that she now thought he was incompetent!

Guess neocon, Hillbilly, Mick, and a very small gaggle of folks will still voice their support for Bush. Even they have been conspicuously absent as of late.

Bill, it is long too late; the Bush Big Lie has already been purchased!

JDR & Rufus, I concur with each of you!

I say leave and let the chips fall where they may in Iraq. However, I say that anything that cannot be brought back should be totally destroyed so as not to be useful to anyone left there.

It never ceases to amaze me about the amount of historical revisionism about the way this country left SoutheastAsia in the mid 70s.

It goes hand in hand with the depth of denial found in the Usual Suspects here and on the internet/lame stream media in general over Iraq.

Do they actually believe that international political, social, and cultural conflicts, and the results of major changes in American involvement exist in a vacuum?

To call them ignorant or naive on the reality of this truth would be generous.

A poster at this thread put it in perspective:

James D. Rockefeller [TypeKey Profile Page] said:

Well I don't know about the other revisions you've put forth - certainly I've never suggested them - and Gorby may not have "singlehandedly ended the Cold War", but according to at least one very high level through the ranks career CIA guy who worked in the White House with Five Presidents .. Gorby was the amiable dunce who played a much larger role in the fall than good ol' Ronnie.

Have you have anything to back your argument, Bubbahead?

So here's what I think, Bubba.

I think you really believe that stuff - you either made it up or you got it from some other fruitcake, but you REALLY BELIEVE it .. and that makes you more than a Bozo - it makes you at least as dangerous as the imaginary [or real] "poster at this thread" ... whatever "this thread" means.
